Personally, I’d keep Rossi but…..
…I don’t think there is a trade out there that will satisfy the fan base. I agree with a poster above who said something to the effect that we are unlikely to get anyone back of the same value. This is where my mind has been as well. I look around the league and I don’t see a ton of teams with similar level talent to Rossi that I’d be willing to move if I were those teams. When it goes down, might not be a bad trade in the long run, but I think it’s going to disappoint initially. I’m starting to think the deal will be centered around a draft pick or picks rather than top player(s) in return.
Having said that, I think there is definitely some smoke with Buffalo. If I’m the Sabres, I’m not parting with Thompson or Peterka. Doesn’t make sense to me if I’m Buffalo. I would want to build around them. But if I’m Buffalo, would a 60-point center, coming off his first full NHL season at 24 years old, be enough of a prize to get me to part with the 9th pick in the upcoming draft? If I’m the Wild and I’m just going to be stubborn and move Rossi, if I could get that pick at 9 and say, Peyton Krebbs from Buffalo, I might do that deal. I like Krebs at 2C. Same age as Rossi. Not as offensively gifted but he’s coming off a 28-point season. He’s like sandpaper to play against, cut more from that Eriksson Ek cloth. Plays a heavier game than Rossi and he’s much better on the defensive end and the penalty kill. He’s also fair in the dot. He’s only signed for $1.2M next year and you would have to extend him after that, but you could then spend all your money this year on Marner, or go a little cheaper with Boeser and save some money for next year’s FA class. If you could get that pick at 9, there are going to be some interesting picks on the board. I’d love Radim Mrtka.
But as I said to begin this, I’d keep Rossi and build around him. Just don’t think that is gonna be the path they take.
