Player Discussion Marco Rossi

Was it really? I thought it was that they had Yurov ranked higher but took Öhgren first because they thought Yurov would be more likely to fall to their second pick?
I've been operating on the belief that they said that. I know for a fact they said what you said, though. If I've been wrong all this time, I am going to absolutely lose it.

Or just move on. Probably just move on.

I remember seeing something like that. To me it's a weird gamble to take if you really wanted the lower picked guy.

I wonder if the same thing would have been said if they had gotten Snugguard or the other Russian (Miro-something) instead of Yurov?

Usually it's very weird, but that was back when everyone was big into showing everyone else they didn't like Russia, so at least there's some context that could explain it.

@BagHead @Wabit @AKL

They did a behind the seasons type video thing for that draft. They obviously didn't use names, but I remember being able to gather/deduce that they had Yurov at #9, Ohgren at #10 and Snuggerud at #11 (or close to it).

Start at 54 seconds. Then again at 1:54.

That was a great watch. Cant wait to see these two next fall.

I wasn't talking about Peterka, but Nelson, obviously. If the Sabres are open to Rossi for Peterka, it's intriguing. That's not a guarantee, nor is Peterka's ability to provide greater value than Rossi has done -- and since we don't know either man's contract demands or final cost, you have no idea what Peterka's "value" is. Rossi is still a work in progress in the center role but I have some faith in him being a better player than Brock Nelson next season.
Then why are you talking in that post like it’s Rossi for Nelson? Example: If we trade Rossi+ for Thompson (right wing) and sign Nelson as a stop gap center, are you still sitting here complaining that we swapped Rossi for some old bozo (paraphrasing your statement)?

Because it's basically a trade of one 2nd line center for another, likely worse one. But I get your point, no need to belabor it.

I don't hate Nelson, especially at around $3 million he'd be a bargain. Bringing in Thompson would be huge.

I just don't think we've seen the best of Rossi and I hate that other teams always seem to profit from the Wild's drafting and development more than the Wild have.

Personally, I’d keep Rossi but…..

…I don’t think there is a trade out there that will satisfy the fan base. I agree with a poster above who said something to the effect that we are unlikely to get anyone back of the same value. This is where my mind has been as well. I look around the league and I don’t see a ton of teams with similar level talent to Rossi that I’d be willing to move if I were those teams. When it goes down, might not be a bad trade in the long run, but I think it’s going to disappoint initially. I’m starting to think the deal will be centered around a draft pick or picks rather than top player(s) in return.

Having said that, I think there is definitely some smoke with Buffalo. If I’m the Sabres, I’m not parting with Thompson or Peterka. Doesn’t make sense to me if I’m Buffalo. I would want to build around them. But if I’m Buffalo, would a 60-point center, coming off his first full NHL season at 24 years old, be enough of a prize to get me to part with the 9th pick in the upcoming draft? If I’m the Wild and I’m just going to be stubborn and move Rossi, if I could get that pick at 9 and say, Peyton Krebbs from Buffalo, I might do that deal. I like Krebs at 2C. Same age as Rossi. Not as offensively gifted but he’s coming off a 28-point season. He’s like sandpaper to play against, cut more from that Eriksson Ek cloth. Plays a heavier game than Rossi and he’s much better on the defensive end and the penalty kill. He’s also fair in the dot. He’s only signed for $1.2M next year and you would have to extend him after that, but you could then spend all your money this year on Marner, or go a little cheaper with Boeser and save some money for next year’s FA class. If you could get that pick at 9, there are going to be some interesting picks on the board. I’d love Radim Mrtka.

But as I said to begin this, I’d keep Rossi and build around him. Just don’t think that is gonna be the path they take.

What’s this BS that Tage isn’t a center, lol. Sure he sucks at faceoffs and Buf played him at wing after coming off an injury, but that was to ease him back in, lessen the load. It’s my understanding that he’s their plan at 1c, and has played there for his best years in the nhl. Pair that dude with a selke level 2c like Ek, get all the o-zone starts. Would love to see it but no way he’s gettable unless he wants out. Thought he had a nmc or a modified one at least.

That was the story, but if they REALLY thought that Yurov was that much better they'd have taken him 19th. I sure as hell would. I think it was more of a pick'em, and they left off Yurov due to the political climate at the time.

I think the chances of that happening are non existent. Probably twice that cap hit- it all depends on the term.

This is where I'm at too. One was higher than the other on the draft board, but the separation between the players wasn't much of anything.

GMBG hasn't been shy about trading up in any other draft to get the guy they wanted, even if it's only a few spots.
