It is pretty common knowledge that the Leafs problem isn't that they don't win the cup. It's that they can't win a single round of playoff hockey over the span of decades against largely lower seeded teams.

Leafs lost to cup finalists in 2013, 2019, 2021 and 2022 so there’s a bit more of a wrinkle there, but it’s not Toronto “problem” that other markets, media personnel and players feel the need to weigh in.

He has a rep for being a bit of a dink to play against, be it what he says or the dives. Seems right in line with that to get into Leaf heads early.

Some may interpret it as those teams having a lot left in the tank after beating the Leafs.
After going 6 or 7 games in most of those, OK  Let alone what it says about the other teams those finalists faced along the way

Nice deflection

How's that a deflection? Completely legitimate to question why a "hometown"/home province player returning for his 1 game a year in MTL on HNIC is being asked about the Leafs season? I'll tell you what, no one's asking Brad Marchand about Slafkovský's rookie season or the Habs rebuild before the Leafs/Bruins game tonight.

The only cheap rent in Toronto is in the minds of players and fans around the league

and what’s that been good for? A first round exit and watching your star player be a gutless coward.

congrats on that free rent.

pretty sure the players enjoy their soft opponent and fans sure as hell enjoy watching them run in place year after year.

But the metaphor is a good one. Dubas is an absentee landlord.

Kind of unusual seeing another team player saying that kind of stuff a few days before playing the team he's talking about.

I guess Matthews standing still and doing nothing doesn't instill the fear it used to

Here's the thing; nobody cares enough about the Buffalo Sabres to bother asking about them.

We truly do not care

He may be right. Leafs haven't played as well as we thought they would in October.

We'll see if it continues into November.

Everyone's obsessed about the Leafs. Center of the universe, hockeytown, mecca....all true!

There's only one team in hockey that matters. Win or lose, the Leafs will always be headline news. The rest are irrelevant.

Weird they'd ask him about a team he's not even playing tonight. Does Vegas play the Leafs tomorrow or something?

So a Montreal based media outlet is just going around asking other teams about the Leafs?

And people blame Toronto media for never shutting up about the Leafs?

Finally, that Montreal media would want to talk to a Vegas based player about Toronto, well, that's not really a Toronto problem either.

He was interviewed because he's a québécois and speak french, and his team has success in the league right now. And he's in town.
He was asked about the Leafs because he plays his next game against them (after the Habs get destroyed by them tonight)

And Marchessault is 100% right btw about the Leafs

I said since before the start of the season when Leafs were ranked #1 in power rankings that indeed, they're not as good as people think.

He was asked about the Leafs because the rest of the league are busy bodies and any shot at Toronto is guaranteed to generate this kind of dialogue. That's completely fine, but I wouldn't characterize everyone else's fascination with Toronto as a "Toronto problem." It's not Toronto's problem that Vegas and Montreal don't generate enough topics of conversation in an interview.

This is hilarious lol Habs media has nothing else to talk about ?

That's what I find to be the funniest thing. You have a Quebecois coming back to Montreal on a contending Vegas team but there's not enough storyline there so they need to spice it up with some Leafs chat. And that somehow represents some big Toronto issue.

I haven't looked into this interview but my immediate thought is, why would the player say anything about this. They are trained on how to answer these things like a robot.... Literally nothing to gain here.
