Columbus is under no pressure to move him, if they don't get any offers they like, they'll wait until the TDL at which point they can let every team in contention start a bidding war (if they themselves aren't already in the thick of it)

Columbus making some noise in the playoffs might change Marchenkos mind, so there's no reason to trade him now.

Why would a team in contention trade one of their core players that led them there for Marchenko at the trade deadline? To risk losing all their momentum to do Columbus a favor?

It'd be a great time to get futures, but not to get what Columbus wants.

they already offered Zharovsky, Pickford and two 1sts for Knies. Maybe they value Knies higher because of cost certainty on a reasonable long-term deal, but I'd be surprised if they were off the table for Marchenko.

Would absolutely love the guy but I have a hard time seeing a trade with MTL unless Marchenko pulls a Dobson and only decides he wants the Habs.

Montreal already offered Zhar , plus 2 1 sts and one of Pickford / Fowler for Knies which still got turned down ( holding out for Hage ) . And FYI he’s a winger . So it’s not an outlandish ask at all . Especially if it comes w an extension . The other pieces listed are mostly meh/ alright . Not a realistic basis for a deal without Hage / Zhar imo .

I don't really understand why people can't understand that there are multiple sides to all these storiers. Obviously the Russian reporter got her information from Millstein or the player. Casey had injuries last year and showed a lot of promise when he got time in the NHL. Mercer is 24, has not missed a game (played all 82x5) is a 20 goal scorer, and had the second best year of his career last year. So no he's not a depreciating asset.

I hear what you're saying, although we lost Amirov to cancer and Marner (although not forced). Columbus will find the right mix of front-office and players, and winning changes everything. Gaudreau signing was a big thing and it's just so tragic what happened. It will get better eventually. Columbus is a nice (if not flashy) city. Just keep the faith. What else can you do.

Cost certainty now is a big weight now in negotiations.

I don’t think it’s anything fundamental. Just a very unlucky org up to this point. There’s a lot of luck involved, more than we’d like to admit.

I'd be worried about the price, Habs likely would blow their remaining expendable futures for him and they have no #2C. Essentially making Hage their all or nothing option.

If they trade for him, I'd hope the main peices going back is Guhle+Newhook+1st or something.
