You know what bothers me more than anything about Marc Staal?

People can talk about his passing, his shooting, etc.

But the thing that bothers me the most is pretty simple...its this sequence of events that happens, literally, 15 times a game.

Staal receives the puck in his own zone, either through a takeaway, a turnover, or a pass.
Staal looks down to find puck
looks back up to find passing lanes
looks back down to make sure puck is there
looks back up to make sure passing lane is still there
passing lane is gone
decides to skate the puck up
looks down to find puck again
starts skating
dumps the puck in
team retrieves the puck
passes it to staal
staal receives pass
staal looks down to make sure hes got the puck
looks up to find passing lane
cant find a lane
looks back down to make sure puck is still there
looks up..oh look..still no passing lane...and now no shooting lane
staal dumps the puck up the boards

literally...happens so many times every game i feel like it's deja vu or something.

ye he is slow as hell in his decision making. Always when he goes for a puck down low he waits for the forechecker to come to him before he makes a move. Why dont just take it and skate away as fast as possible so you avoid the pressure? Annoying as hell

All of the stuff we're saying about Staal is exactly why he needs a slick puck mover as his partner. He can do all the defensive work, but he can't get the puck out of danger. Put him with a puck mover and let them go d-to-d with their breakout passes and move through the neutral zone.

Yep Staal should be glued to Clendening. They looked great when they played together and i have no clue or good reason for why AV isnt doing this. Its so obvious and i have no clue how AV or anyone else on the coaching staff dont do it...

Only reason I can think of is that AV has a fetish for giving Staal the 2nd pairing minutes.

I don't know why--it's not like Skjei couldn't do it at this point.

McDonagh-Klein (not advocating that he has been this good, but he's got the potential to be better than anyone else on the right in that situation
Skjei-Clendening
Staal-Holden/Girardi

If Staal is so good, make him carry the boat anchor known as G... Giving them 3rd pair minutes shouldn't kill them.

Or, here's a shocker--play your guys in positions where THEY WON'T FAIL...

Staal is still playing pretty terribly, albeit better than last season.

He'll go to retrieve a dump in, give away the puck, take it back, then give it away again. He needs someone who he can immediately dump the puck off to, or else he's useless.

His skating is just awful, and it's all mental. I've been watching him pretty closely this season, and he just doesn't keep his feet moving. He relies so much on the poke check (which he's admittedly good at) that he literally stops skating and just glides around trying to knock the puck away. Then he gets turnstiled by forwards fast enough to stay out of his reach. He's always going to have a plodding stride, but he literally stops skating and hurts himself even more.

Look at McDonagh. His feet almost never stop moving. And don't say that's an unfair comparison, because I'm not saying Staal could ever be as fluid as McDonagh. I'm just saying he gets out of position because he glides around instead of actively engaging his legs to stay in the play. I have no idea how the coaching staff hasn't addressed this with him.

Meh Staal doesn't really look like anything to me

That's where I'm at. He can play well but still not play well. He may provide a net positive but it's cancelled out by his criminal lack of puck skills.

If he was getting paid 2.5m and playing third pair minutes and being the first one to bump up encase of injury most people would be happy. We live with a salary cap and he is getting paid 5.7m for the next 5 seasons. He is being over paid and misused. One is the prob of the past gm the other is an ongoing theme of a coach who has more than enough sample size to know it will never ever ever get better.

His ability to break up plays and retrieve the puck are actually pretty good this year. But his transition game is Girardi-esque...at least he has a few redeeming qualities though.

Paired with a good puck mover idt I'd have many complaints about Staal's game.

It hurts me to admit that Inferno's post about Staal's decision making is true. I've rooted for him since he was drafted, have his jersey, etc. The guy is simply not skilled at getting the puck out of the zone. I'm not sure if he was ever really good at it prior to the eye injury but he's definitely suffered from the lack of vision and style of NHL play moving toward more puck moving defense.

I just think post injuries staal lost all his toughness and body checking game.. he was great with his stick and his body making him so good defensively but I think something with his vision or mentally trying to avoid another concussion he does want to hit as much and he's much more indecisive with the puck like he can't see it when it's on his own stick

He needs to up the physicality.

League is soft now. This can be a good addition to his game.

Marc Staal is one of the most physically awkward defenseman in the league.

What I've been noticing is that he's actually upped his game. I think all these rumors about Dan being bought out and maybe himself not far behind has scared him a bit. He's been joining the rush and has actually made a few himself.

I think he's just trying to stay the course. Wants to be healthy for playoffs for once. That is when we will need him the most. So, rip me into shreds if you want, but let's face it.......injuries have ruined this guys career, he isn't half the player he was his first 3-4 years. And yes, he's got to move his damned skates from time to time.

Question from reading some posts it seems like the NYR fans are sick of Staal and would want to move him. Hawks fans are in the same boat with Seabrook. What about a swap based around Seabrook for Staal?

Just spitballing.

Seabrook's contract is BAD... I like that he is right handed but I don't know if adding a contract with a $6.9M AAV and 8 years is a good idea.

Chicago JUST signed him to that extension so I don't think they'd do it.

We want to get out of Staal's contract and replace him with someone younger and cheaper. Seabrook is older and has a worse contract.

Staal has been one of the more consistent defensemen...why are we trading him again?

There are others that go before him.
