Proposal: Marc Staal

I'm fully aware of that. But that's two+ years from now. Plenty of time to extend him or move him if he's not interested. That's why I said the team will talk extension next summer (2014) while he still has a year left. I've never seen a contending team move a core player more with more than 2 years remaining on his contract because they are worried about whether he might not re-sign years down the road. The New York Rangers are NOT trading Marc Staal in the next year. It's not happening.

Either way, the front office better be asking Marc what his intentions are. Certainly not after the 2015 season. At that point, he can leave and we're left with ****.

Give the front office a little credit. Regardless of the blatant disrespect he gets on this forum, Staal is one of the most valuable players on the team. I hate to use the term untouchable...but he's that highly regarded in the organization. Extending him will be the Rangers' top priority. They won't be waiting until June of 2015 to call his agent.

Staal's value goes down every year. Not as a player, but trading him with 2 years left will net you more than 1 or less significantly. This is where we are in overpayment range. Also, you lose leverage if he turns down an extension, and that info will leak regardless. And even if he is going to leave, would the Rangers trade him mid season? Probably not, with Henrik they will always be in the hunt. This is a time where you can get 150% of his value. So time really isn't a luxury. Which is why you figure out his intentions before the draft.

Iginla has to be the most prominent example of this for sure. Calgary got burned bad on that trade. I mean that was borderline treasonous. If they had traded him 2 earlier? It would have been significantly higher.

Trading Staal next summer will get you pretty much the same return as trading him this summer. But it's a moot point, since the team isn't trading him.

No, the extra year is significant. You lose leverage by the year. Right now the Rangers would be in control. If he rejects an extension then you lose serious leverage.

By that rationale, we should have already looked into trading Callahan, Girardi and Lundqvist. They only have 1 year left on their contracts. OMG their trade value is going down!!!!!

You also have to look at the environment. In this premise he's going to Carolina. We know right now they are desperate for defensive help. Right now. You can't predict what happens in a year. A draft pick steps up. A FA signing. Whatever. Now all of the sudden they are saying "were fine now, we'll just wait a year and get him for nothing. "

You also know they have a high pick in a good draft.

They have 3 brothers on another team, each?

There seems to be a special circumstance doesn't it?

IF he wants that

My point is the amount of return isn't linear to the length of time remaining on the contract. For example, if Marc could fetch a 1st and a top prospect with a year to go on his contract that doesn't mean he would fetch two 1sts and two top prospects with two years to go. If the team got the sense after next season that he is unlikely to re-sign they might consider moving him then. They aren't going to move him this summer for a slightly higher return at the expense of not having him around to contribute towards a run next season. Any first round pick this year is still likely a couple years away from replacing him, and that's not the mode the team is in currently. The window is open and we need Staal to give us our best chance this year and in the future.

Marc is our #1 d-man. He's in a good spot over here. I don't see why he would want to leave NY for a team like Carolina just because his brothers are there. He doesn't come across as someone who's THAT dependant.

I don't want to trade Staal, at all. I never even considered it. Elliott Freidmans little note was the first time it crossed my mind though. If you can find out his intentions and you know he will probably leave, you will never get higher value for Staal than right now. Me personally, like I said earlier, I'd rather get 150% of his value than 100 or 50. I don't do anything unless I have a 99% assurance he's leaving.

I doubt even Marc is thinking of anything else right now than getting back in the lineup and helping his team win a championship.

If the team gets that sense next season then they will have lost a ton of leverage. It might mean the difference between a top 5 pick this year + or nothing. We need to get his intentions clear now and not wait and then scramble.

He has two years left on his contract. He's not being traded in the next year. It's just not happening. He's our best dman and our chances of winning next season are much better with him than without him. Talk all you want about getting a top pick at this years' draft...but I'm willing to bet it's not something the organization is considering. And rightly so. They want and need Marc next year, the year after that...and hopefully for a lot longer.

In what fantasy world does Staal not have health concerns, let alone a contractual one?

Having a healthy Staal trumps most scenarios discussed here. The problem is the nature of his injuries.

Sauer and Staal getting hurt has just been frustrating to deal with. That's why I'd be open to trading him.

There is NO VALUE in losing Marc Staal ok? Really there isn't.

He needs to be resigned. If he wants out to play in Carolina, throw money at him. Outside of injury hypotheticals, I can't see scenarios where it wouldn't be worth it. And those hypotheticals would be the same for anyone on the team.

Staal needs to be offered and accept an extension prior to the draft. We need to find out if he will leave in 2014 to the Canes. If he does plan to leave, I propose this trade

To Carolina: Marc Staal, 2013 2nd Round Choice
To Rangers: Andrew McBain and Carolinas 2013 first round choice

Being that we have John Moore, we are set on the left side of our defense. Mc Bain plays the right side and will nicely compliment Girardi and Stralman.

The First Round choice could be a great talent.

I would rather keep Marc Staal if he signs the extension.

Done deal, haha. I think Staal is over rated. Move him

Staal is phenomenal and I'd love him in Ranger blue for the rest of his career, but when another team has not one, not two, but three of his brothers... that's a serious problem and forces us to consider our options. If we do trade him, this summer is the optimal time. I doubt Carolina finishes worse than a 6th pick again in the next few years, which is what they currently have. That first (or Skinner) needs to be the primary piece coming back our way.

If they do trade him, they better have a backup plan to replace him. Our Dmen has been average (I'm being nice) without Staal. You can clearly see Lundy's frustration.....

It's extremely doubtful that the 6th overall pick is even going to help the Rangers contend next season or the following season.

Gilbert Brule
Brassard
Sam Gagner
Filatov
OEL
Brett Connolly
Zibanejad
Hampus Lindholm

Of those, the only player on Staal's level is OEL. None of them would have anywhere near the impact of Staal on the Rangers' ability to contend. The Rangers are in win now mode.

Those two years of Staal vs the drafted players' career? Yea obviously you can make the argument. But it puts a significant damper on the Rangers' window, which is why I just don't see it happening.
