Feel like this thread is necessary, because I feel like no one is talking about Staal when he's been, IMO, our best defenseman by far in this series. He's stepped it up for McD big time. He's done an amazing job on Simmonds.

Guy ALWAYS steps it up in the playoffs. Not having him was really a huge blow last year, Would have been a much different series against the B's if we had this Marc Staal on our second pairing.

If McD returns to his form and Staal continues to be playoff Staal I'll be shocked if we don't at least make the ECF. Seriously we have the best shutdown D in the league. Other teams may have a bit more well rounded D, but shutdown-wise I think we're #1. I really hope McDonagh comes back to his form he had before the injury.

He was dominant before the Olympics but had a rough time right after. Really good to see him back on that level. We have 4 of the top 15-20 shutdown dmen on this team. That's really incredible.

Not a bad thing having a legit #1D playing on your 2nd pairing.

Players like him are why other fan bases think we a boring. We can't help the fact that we can completely shut down teams with our D.

Personally, I thought Staal was terrible in game 2. He's been very good the other two games however.

He's one of those players that is does his job very quietly but makes a big impact. When he's gone its very noticeable, but you kinda take for granted when hes on the ice. When he wasnt with the team for long stretches and it was difficult to fill his skates.

I think it bears mentioning that Staal probably could've been nominated for the Masterson if they allowed more than one nominee for each team. Moore's situation was incredibly different and no comparison, but we were wondering if we would ever see Staal again after his eye injury and then again after the hit from Boucher in December. The guy has battled back and shown incredible perseverance the last few years.

McDonagh may be the Rangers' best all-around defenseman, but I think Staal is the Rangers best/most consistent defensive defenseman when hes healthy.

“My brothers are green with envy at my situation right now,” Marc said of Eric and Jordan, whose Carolina team missed the playoffs for the second straight season. “I get to come to the rink every day. I’m lucky to be here.”

So much for Staal reuniting with his brothers down in Carolina...

Staal has been great. I think he gets overlooked sometimes due to the emergence of McDonagh, but Staal is very important to this team.

That is an awesome quote.

Marc has been his usual self. When he is on he is a top 5-10 pure defensive dman in the league. A treat to watch.

When both are healthy I think we have the Crosby-Malkin of defensive defensemen. Maybe not the 2 best in the world, but 2 of the best in the league that are on different pairings. Just hoping McDonagh is the same McDonagh this season again.

I dont think he's back to where he was before his injury troubles but it's hard to ask for a better defensive guy on your second pairing.

I don't think McDonagh is playing bad overall, just not up to his usual standard, so it's nice to have consistency out there when the first pairing isn't on the ice

Perfect time for this, as Staal has been playing a great game. His handling of Flyers in the Rangers zone has been something to watch, and I like the way he is contributing offensively in a responsible manner.

Six years/$36 Million. Staal will 34 at the end of 6 year extension. No move in the first 3 years and limited no trade in last 3 years. $24 million in the first 3 years.

Yea it's sweet when on the road Staal can go against top lines. Having him and mcd 1, 2 is a blessing on ld

Having a guy like Staal on the 2nd pairing is one of the things that gives NYR one of the top 5 defensive corps in the league.

There is an opportunity cost from giving him that big of a contract, but the Rangers offense right now has plenty of weapons as well.

If that core of 3 Ranger blueliners play their whole careers here I wouldn't take issue with it at all.
