Oh I definitely think pettiness played a part - but that doesn't mean they also don't genuinely value and want the player.

I think both positions can be true.
I'm convinced they really like the player, there's no way this is pure revenge, but at the end of the day, the price in cap and assets for an underwhelming player is way too high.

I'm wondering if KK scores 12 goals next year, how do they handle that contract....does KK's agent come out and say hey, we doubled the production, he's worth at least 6.1m$....then they'll be looking for long term, maybe 5yrs at that cap.....it's a huge gamble man, not one that I'd be willing to make if I were GM

Meanwhile in Hab land, we land Dvorak who's young, who's great on the dot, plays the 200ft game and can produce offensively. I'm willing to bet he pots north of 20 this year to go along with 30 plus assists.

If Kotkaniemi doesn't progress he probably won't get a salary increase.

It's not a huge gamble, as they didn't give up much.

I think we'll only be able to know the answer to that in the long term - the 6.1M for this year, while it sticks out like a sore thumb, is really just a paper weight. It's the cost to acquire a young, cost controlled, recently drafted, high pick (along with the picks).

I agree on the surface it seems completely out of whack - but that's the only way offer sheets work and that's really what they were designed to do.

The offer sheet system was conceived for these specific situations - not so much for situations like Hughes/Petersson, Dahlin or Kaprizov.

Those will be easy matches. Case closed.

But a guy like Kotkaniemi or say....Yamamoto for example, the probability is much higher if the offer sheet is intentionally high.

I think they'll try to put KK in the positions this year to justify their trade, with the aim of getting an extension for something more long term in the 4-5M range.

Just a 1st round pick and 3rd round pick in a super draft, a deep draft........if Bergevin did this, guess the reaction on this board.

We lost a 1st and 3rd
we lost Hamilton because we didn't pay him his money.

so essentially it's like losing Caufield and Mysak and Petry because we wanted to try out a player who's not progressing and pay 6.1m$ because he was a 3rd overall pick.

For all we know, and it's trending that way, it's like going after PoolParty

good points....

I forget, but how low from the 6.1 can they go?? I'm thinking 85% but I could be wrong.

Seems to me they swinging for the fences here on a 1-2 count, not looking to good now but if they connect, they will have succeeded to doing what they had planned to do, and it comes with a fortune cookie as they pried KK from Habs.....which I'm all good with BTW

Yeah so roughly 5.18 or something like that...but the odds that an arbitrator would lower the salary after the Canes just gave him a 6.1M offer sheet are extremely low.

One can reason that even if Kotkaniemi doesn't have a great season, it's unlikely he couldn't surpass last years numbers.

So I imagine it would be difficult to justify going to arbitration over a qualifying offer if KK's coming off a 8 goal 30pt season for example.

But that's just a guess, i'm not 00% sure on how that process works

Yeah agreed, like I said, I think this is where the element of pettiness is at play.

Because while I think they like the player, no one can tell me this happens if the Habs had never sent an offer sheet for Aho.

If the Canes want to keep KK long term, it's gonna be complicated for them.

A qualifying offer is immediately signed by KK because it means another year at 6.1M, even if his numbers are still not there.

A 3-4 years contract has to have decent numbers, otherwise KK can only wait to test the market and get the best possible deal.

Things look good for KK if he shows just a decent progression. For the Canes? It's potentially complicated.

Not a chance

Something tells me this will be a hot topic all season long amongst our posters, should be fun

Let's make a bet my friend.

I bet that the worst defensive forward in the league will get 60 points this year.

If he doesn't get 60 points and you accept the bet I'm out forever but if you accept and he gets 60 points you're out forever.

Are you game my chicken friend?

That’s a bet I’d be willing to take on the odds are stacked against you IMO. So sure if you win @WeThreeKings is out forever :sarcasm: if you lose Bye Bye @Belial.

Bergevin decides to play KK on the wing, this would earn him 47 pages of a shit kicking on this forum....but Waddell does it and now he's a genius, a visionary.

The only problem with this theory is The fact that Bergevin has continually insisted he doesn’t get involved with coaching decisions. :sarcasm:
