I'm seeing a lot of these comments zoomed in on ice time, carefully cutting out the relevant stats that show Clarke was simply not good in that series. He was getting beat up by Trent Frederic and Connor Brown while Edmundson was playing against Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He didn't earn more ice time.

The deployment was close to identical to the D TOI/GP they ran after Doughty got back from injury just before the 4 nations and they were a top team in the NHL with it the rest of the way including a 17-5-0 stretch to end the season and won the first 2 games of the series. Why on earth would anyone think its the worst ever deployment? Does the Oilers beating Vegas and Dallas the next 2 rounds in fewer games possibly mean they had worse D deployment?

Feels like an engagement tweet with no real substance.

I for one liked the Babcock era which he was an assistant for. Don’t know how to judge his overall impact. My disappointment comes from how hyped his coaching search was but I guess I’d give him a chance before saying anything.

He’s seen as a conservative d first coach...
That defensive reputation is mostly because he inherited and maintained McLellan's defensive system, which included the 1-3-1. Prior to that, in Detroit, Toronto, NYI and LA before his promotion, he worked mostly with offense and was a powerplay specialist. Also, he's not really conservative because he's willing to try new things, like utilizing 11 forwards and 7 defensemen, and 5 forwards on the powerplay. I'd say that he's more of a free-thinking, offensive guy, which is probably why the Leafs hired him. Fears that he'll run a stifling defensive system probably aren't warranted, at least when it comes to the regular season. Who knows what you'll see from him in the playoffs, though.

Bruce Cassidy is way out of Toronto's budget. They said on a podcast today that Toronto is very cost cutting when going about the coach hire.

How the f*** would they know?

And if they were cost cutting they wouldn't have fired Berube who they are still paying to sit at home.

They had the option to hire Cassidy ( Vegas apparently gave Toronto permission to interview him ) but went this route. Ok then

Who said they were allowed to interview him? News has come out that he was allowed to talk to a team, but nothing says it was the Leafs.

I'm really kind of baffled.

This is the wealthiest organization in the league, at a crossroads with their star player who's contract is running out and they need to make very important decisions in terms of the direction the franchise is going in, decisions that may affect if Auston Matthews stays or leaves for greener pastures.

They have a clean slate and a blank cheque book and they have an exhaustive search to find the best possible General Manager and they land on ... John Chyaka.

Then they fire the head coach, and once again, they have the resources to bring in the best possible coach to put their stamp on this team and move the organization forward and after going through all off the candidates they choose ... Jim Hillier?

I'm really at a loss.

What the hell are they doing?
So your argument makes sense. But the leafs had done that before, threw unprecedented money at Babcock only to fire him with years left on his contract. Looking at hiller’s coaching record in LA it’s actually quite good. He coached a kings team to 105 points in 24/25. And when he was fired the kings winning % wasn’t much different with the new guy. I say give him a chance.

A lot of Montreal fans are coming in here to give their opinion on a coach they have never watched.

After the Carolina series and realizing how far they are from competing against the best teams, they need something to talk about, so I am glad you can all pretend like you know anything about Hiller. It's good to take your mind off that disastrous series.

“Haha you watching us stumble around with poo and pee intentionally smeared on our pants makes YOU pathetic” - Leafs fans today

Perfect fit for Toronto.
