As others said, it doesn't seem likely that a team picking around #5 would be willing to drop down 20 spots. Sometimes I think it's easy to conflate the NFL draft with the NHL draft but it's a different beast.

Teams trading down typically have somebody in mind and have the mentality that they're still getting the player they were going to take originally anyways. So this is usually why you only see teams trade down a handful of spots. Teams don't want to risk trading back too far and getting sniped. Anaheim traded down from #12 to #17 in 2008 allegedly thinking they could still get Erik Karlsson, but then Ottawa traded up from #18 to #15.

It took a series of trades, but the Islanders turned #26, #37, #56, and #181 into #12 at the 2009 Draft. That's the same ballpark as TOR1, CHI2, DAL2. Not sure Slaggert or Kaiser moves the needle for Buffalo.

That said, you'd have to find a team motivated to trade down which isn't a given every year. Last year Buffalo moved #11 for #14 and #42 before the draft started. On Day 2, they moved their own 2nd (#43) for Beck Malenstyn.

Tampa made a curious move on draft day 2002 when Jay Feaster dealt the #4 pick for Ruslan Fedotenko and two 2nd rounders. One of the 2nds was dealt for Brad Lukowich. Value wise that one always felt questionable but Feaster got his name on the Cup.

Agreed. Therr is such a big difference between 4-_6 and 24-26.

Last yr sabres traded down before the draft with SJ a few spots and got a high 2nd. They want ed d the 3nd as a trade chip for NHL roster players

Back in 2012 draft just before BUF traded a pick at 21 and a low 40s pick for CGY #14. C as Gary fidnt have a 2nd as nd wanted one and they didnt ser a big drop between 14 and 221.

Buffalo has s deep prospect pool in the AHL and fors not need more nhl roster players unless it fills a need.

It also depends on the dtaft yr and what yhrrr.

Wiyh buffalo in 3014 draft tim Murray has 3 2nd toned picks and a 3rd round pick ( 31-61 which would be a late 1st and 3 3nds, todsy) and tried to trade up to 16-19 ,,but no takers

say the 3 picks were 28+33+57...the 28 and 57 could get you to 20 and the 20 and 33 could get you to 12-13 but it depends greatly on the draft depth. from 12 to 5-6 is a huge price

Buffalo moved down to get a 2nd for a possible trade. This was done a week or so before the draft.

In hockey trade lore there have been some odd trades that make no sense. You had the trades made so vancouver could dtaft the Sedins

I imagine that if Buffalo is trading this pick, they'd probably be trying to acquire someone who would help them end their playoff drought?

are the guys we choose from at the end linesmen or lawyers or janitors? What kind of not NHL caliber guy am I choosing from?
I mean Kaiser is a 22 yr old LD who has been solid for Hawks and looks every bit the part of an NHL 4-6 going forward

This year

Problem for Hawks (A good problem to have) is our D is fully jammed when it comes to kids

- 23 yr old LD Alex Vlasic (Established NHL top 4)
- 23 yr old RD Louis Crevier (Showing NHL quality play this year trying to establish himself)
- 22 yr old LD Ethan Del Mastro (AHL all-star last year, Looks good in NHL this year)
- 21 yr old LD Nolan Allan (Looked good first half of year, Coaching change saw him playing less and is back in AHL)
- 20 yr old LD Kevin Korchinski (Looked improved in brief callup this year, AHL all-star this year)
- 19 yr old RD Arytom Levshunov (Looks promising, seems lock to be on NHL roster to start next year)

Possibly in que

- 24 yr old RD Victor Soderstrom (Hawks acquired his rights and speculation is he will come back to NA)

- Taige Harding and Sam Rinzel are in NCAA potentially to be signed by Hawks (Harding rights expire in August)

Add in very real possibility Hawks could be drafting #1 and may end up drafting LD Matthew Schaefer (The most likely #1 pick in this draft and appears to be BPA)

Someone from Hawks D group (Kaiser and Allan seem most likely) will be trade chip for forward help

Slaggert is just an energy 3rd/4th liner at best type who could have potential to be 20-30 pt guy down line. Nothing amazing but someone most likely to stick around NHL for longtime
