Any crosscheck, or any serious contact via aggression, to the back of the neck is really, really bad and should net the aggressor more than 1-game.
I agree, my post was more of a way of pointing out the guy posting a clip from 8 years ago to compare punishment.

The other thing going for him is 1st time offender.

But yeah, there is no sympathy for Mangiapane here, it was beyond f***ing stupid.

Jason Spezza
Auston Matthews
Michael Bunting

All players with no history of supplemental discipline.

All players who were awarded harsher suspensions than Mangiapane.

Spezza and Bunting were given 6 games (or the equivalent of such) for worse infractions, but not that much worse.

Matthews was given 2 games for much less.

Interesting how DoPS works

There’s is no part of this that could possibly be viewed as a hockey play, pure and simple attempt to injure & it’s 1 game ? So much for deterring this type of crap in the future. Fantastic job NHL, this was probably the easiest example of the need for dops to come down hard and they completely f***ed it up…again.

Would anyone like to sign my petition to change the name of DOPS to Department of Paradoxical Suspensions?

Mangy being suspended 10+ instead of 1 would be closer to the mark. The DOPS is a joke, and again, missed the mark by 180 degrees. There was 0 hockey in this "play", and is why crap like this keeps happening.

I agree it’s dumb, and he needed to be punished but when compared to the Benn play I see a pretty clear difference. Benn gave the guy a sharp, emphatic cross check to the facial area. This was more of a pressing down motion. There’s no violent impact here for me that puts it in the same ballpark. He presses his face into the ice which could cause harm of course but it seems much less violent while being just as dumb.

There was no reason for it, I’m not making excuses for the guy and I’m not a Flames fan. I’m glad he got something as it has no point to it, I just think it pales in comparison to the Benn one.
