Managerial Thread - 24/25 Season - Lolst Ham United

Russell Martin gets his marching order as well. He did it his way but it wasn't close to good enough.

Martin's issue was a shocking level of rigidity.

He did a really really good job getting them up with a squad that was 1. not PL quality when it went down and 2. had been stripped of its PL quality components.

But when did we get to a point where a manager being stubborn with their system became viewed as a benefit rather than a problem? This ties into the issues at City too, where Pep is showing a shocking unwillingness to adjust. Martin's stubbornness here boggled the mind. Southampton's very good possession game did them well to get them promoted (and his tactics are, I think, why they got promoted). But PL pressers are not Championship pressers! The lack of adaptability is best encapsulated in the 5-1 loss to Chelsea a few weeks ago, in which he threw his 4th choice keeper out to the hounds and asked him to play out of the back. Like, what the f*** is that!!!

Ex-Celtic and NYCFC manager (amongst others) Ronny Deila is expected to be named new Atlanta United manager

Ivan Juric close to being named Southampton manager, he was apparently high on their list as well in 2022 before they hired Nathan Jones (Juric I think turned them down he was under contract with Torino still)

Bo Svensson out at Union Berlin

RB Salzburg hire Thomas Letsch who was last with Bochum (but came through the Red Bull system). He was a target for the Philly Union job as well

JL has gotta be on thin ice after today's results considering question marks were made in early December, as reported by Ornstein.

Fabio Cannavaro new Dinamo Zagreb manager, so he joins Gattuso in the league and now all the managers in the traditional “top four” are foreigners

Baumgart finally fulfills his destiny and becomes Union head coach.

I remember when he took over DC United, he could not even win with a MLOLS side

He proceeded to stink it up in Birmingham City before being sacked and now got sacked again with an even worse team

The Championship is very competitive overall. Rooney was out of is depth looking at his track record.

True but INEOS aren’t broke either

But I could be wrong
You're confusing the issues here. Ratcliffe/INEOS can't pump more of his own money into the club per PSR regulations and having just added the 100 million pre previous agreement. Also shouldn't you be going after ETH to do the same as Rooney? 🤔

Rooney has something like 200 million in career earnings from salary, plus extra from endorsements. He was making a reported 500k/year from being a manager. The pay he was receiving was trivial compared to what he'd already earned.

ETH has probably made 30-40m in his managerial career and was due a payout of 16 million.

Not to mention the obvious, which is that Plymouth Argyle are the lowest budget team in the Championship and Man United are... Man United...

ah right

Potter to replace sacked Lopetegui? Probably won't get much money to spend in January, but summer should be another matter.

Saw that rumour too. Could work but also could seriously drive a nail in his career. West Ham has been rough soil for coaches

The rot always starts from the top. West Ham will always wildly vacillate between good and terrible seasons because David Sullivan is a blowhard. If he just sat back and let Steidten/Potter handle the roster decisions, they'd be a lot better off (even if this past summer's business is an early strike against him as well).

As for Lopetegui, the guy's been a dead man walking for weeks. Just zero improvement from preseason to today, a lot of players have even regressed. I think this could be a good landing spot for Potter, but we'll see what he's able to do with this squad. Zero midfield pace and boneheaded CBs aren't easily worked around.
