Moving them right now, I feel, will either cost us more assets or we basically get nothing in return. Maybe the team's direction at the moment is to keep both, hoping for them to rebound somewhat in the upcoming season, so that we can be in a better position to negotiate a trade?

If they don't improve their plays, at least we would've burnt off another year of their contract, right?

For sure that is the best option now since like you said it’s going to cost us assets to move them.

In hindsight we should’ve taken the reported deals for them last offseason when Alvin was offered a (supposedly) 2nd for Garland and a 3rd (?) for Brock

Aside from that, they are obviously sensitive to making the team worse next season. Though we're conditioned to saying the Canucks have too much salary on the wings, they actually aren't that deep there. Outside of Kuzmenko you aren't looking at a great group, in my opinion now that Miller has moved to centre. And I doubt they'll bank on Podkolzin and Hoglander since neither has proven to be consistent.

Garland or Boeser could easily be our second-best winger next year. I suspect they'd prefer to move Myers at this point and use that cap space for a 3C and even some more scoring depth on the wing.

Wish list at this point is probably a versatile (preferably right-handed) two-way centre that can move up and down the line-up, and a top-six winger with size.

The situation does feel quite unpleasant, but still less painful than any of the choices that would've involve OEL before we decided to buy his ass out.

I do agree. Unless it’s a no brainer, I’d hold both of them for now. Not like their value can deteriorate.

Myers is the more important one to move before the season starts, and frankly, improving just one of 3c and 4d should be big enough to help attain good results for the first stretch of the season.

Regarding Mysers, do you think that we might've been able to negotiate a trade deal that will come to practice after his bonus is paid? I'm not sure if that's against the rules or anything.

Can’t imagine that it’s against the rules. But the benefit to moving Myers is if you have a follow up move to it. Or if you can make a money Ehrhoff deal.

I feel like having that set of moves lined up and ready to go at the start of training camp is unlikely.

I doubt that they’d have the follow up move lined up for months as well.

I do think they’ll move him.

Another thing I’d be doing right now is calling up Bear’s agent. It’s long enough into the offseason where he’s probably only garnering a fully buryable? buriable? contract

They are on the right track, the OEL buyout was the right move considering the use of the cap space subsequently because the second-pairing on defense does look materially improved, which was a huge issue. They really had no choice post-Miller contract and Hronek acquisition because they made the bed.

But as you said subsequently, without moving Myers they're not really going into the season improved as a team, in my opinion. I think they're still in the same situation as they were entering last season, and playing really loose with depth in many positions (especially at centre).

So yeah, Myers needs to be moved .... they need to bring in another two-way centre and ideally another two-way winger with size ... even if they don't move Garland or Boeser.

I think you largely run the blueline "as is" post-Myers trade, which probably makes your bottom pairing an issue, but that's the story when you have cap problems. You need that salary space up front.

It feels very much like the sewer crawling scene from Shawshank Redemption, just gotta hold your nose and crawl through 500 yards of putrid shit mixed with your own vomit. But with each inch we grind through the smell becomes slightly less repulsing.

Here's hoping that at the end of the pipe lies our salvation.

Excellent and vivid analogy

I believe at the end of this season the tunnel all of a sudden lights up just enough to realize you will see the opening soon

3 of our 4 top four dmen are different next season.

OEL buyout.

Traded 5 year captain in big deal to Islanders.

Acquired Hronek in big deal from Wings.

Major overhaul to our development program.

What the hell change are you not keeping up with? This management has been one of the busiest in the league over the last 2 years and we're finally seeing the last of these dumb Benning contracts expire.

Try to keep up things are trending the right way.
I would agree that things are trending the right way..You can finally see that PA/JR are untangling themselves from the fiscal straightjacket they inherited (it came with a hefty price tag though).

Acquiring a top 4 RHD in his prime years was a big get.

Players from Abby seamlessly fitting into the NHL Canuck lineup last season..The left hand and the right hand are on the same page pertaining to their minor league affiliate..(the last time this happened was back in the Moose days in Winnipeg).

Still anybody's guess if they are a playoff team, but I would say that on the whole, the new management have targeted the issues, and dealt with them.

I still don't see how it's any time before the deadline, though (and then if the Canucks are competitive, they won't bother). This narrative out there that "once Myers' bonus is paid, he's an asset" just flies in the face of the "no one has any cap room" observation. The problem is the cap space just as much as the cash, even before you get to the NTC problem.

I don't think we move myers, I think we move Garland.

I think the plan is to keep myers into the season and when Bear can come back (on a cheap deal because of his injury) we trade him then. He will have lots of value at that point where his cap is down and the salary is so little

Ana, Chi, Arizona all have a ton of cap.

SJ makes a lot of sense especially if they retain on Karlsson. They would’ve paid so much cash they might want to swap with us 5M of real cash contract for Myers’s 1M in real cash contract to save some real cash.

None of those really fit the profile of “see the player as an asset” trades – i.e. teams actually wanting the player. By definition they’ll be over the cap floor, so they’d largely still be trying to get something from the Canucks to take the deal (except maybe SJ as you note), and there’s little reason to think Myers would be willing to do it.

Its not the cap hit that is seen as a positive for Myers. It is his salary. If you are anywhere under the cap and not worried about the cap ceiling paying a guy like myers 1 mil in cash is good. He is a solid #5 despite what we all think from watching him forced to be a 1RD or at worst a #4.

Like I have said earlier I don't think we trade him, I think we currently look at him as a fine luxury to have to solidify a bottom pairing. Think we would want to move on from the wings first.

With the buyout to compete now, it feels like we opted to extend the pipe for another 150 yards but with 60% less shit so a little bit more can squeeze through.

The question is, can we crawl that extra 150 yards before the warden wakes up (ie. rebuilding teams in division) and catches us :D

Well... if we are Andy in this I like where this goes...

Looks like Nashville has cap and they are a small market team that just spent 8M cash in retention of Ryan Johansen. Taking on Myers and sending over like some salary over could be something that that makes sense to save ownership some $$$

Clearly you missed the improve part, still the same mid maybe wildcard contender.

They did a bunch of basic stuff every team should do, improve a bottom 5 development program, no choice but to buyout oel, finally address the D they'd largely ignored, and swapped a center for a Dman is a wash at best. Really Impressive stuff. Clearly the favorites for mgmt team of the year awards.

When do the last of the dumb Alvin contracts expire?

Try to keep up things are trending practically the same as last season.

In order to actually compete now and appease the all powerful EP, we need more than the basics.

Arizona makes sense to me. The reports are they have wanted to improve the roster. I think there's an obvious connection there.

I've been thinking that we might see an NBA style "trade" where teams publicly announce a trade far in advance of the actual date of completion so that players have time to get settled in their new city.

I just think that this management group has something going on. it's clear that they understand what's wrong with the roster. I think they themselves will see it as a failure if they don't move out one of the bad contracts. I think all the reporting has been that they see 3c as a problem since the Horvat trade.

Like I said, I'll be incredibly happy if they can pull off just one more thing before the season starts. They've nailed the three free agency additions. Either give yourself some insurance with another top four D or some sort of center insurance. Then I feel like you can kind of stomach going into the season with the "what if any of hughes/miller/ep get injured" thing knowing you'll have one or the other to rely on.

One of the best movies for me.

The names you throw out that doesn’t actually help the team improve short term nor long term.

We made moves to seriously shake up the roster already. We changed 12 players on the active roster, including our captain, tell me how that the roster is not “shaken up” already.

I love how you guys are like we need to get as many draft picks as possible for the future and then proceed to assume every draft pick we have made will never make it and we’ll need to rebuild in 3 years.
Right now with draft capital and cap space you could help teams in cap trouble by getting good players at a significant discount. You are under valuing the cap space and the draft capital as an option. We will also need young players on ELC if we want a cup. Playoffs would be nice, but winning a cup is the goal. We haven’t been making the playoffs with a clear number one Center, dman and goalie, has a team ever effectively transitioned from a lotto team to a cup winner without cleaning up cap space and building up a prospect pool?

Yeah for the other questions I don't know when message boards really became a big thing for fans to flock to, as these were the early days of the internet. I got onto one called Fanhome which used the same format currently on HF in '99, and knew of hockeysfuture.com at the time but the format was a lot shittier until they made the change to the current look in 2002. So in the summer of '97 I feel like it was a lot more face-to-face discussion at school/work/bar/etc, or was for me at least.

And in terms of the Messier signing it went from huge hype in the summer but quickly turned to anger and scorn that season. I know Messier was old but he was just coming off a great season in New York and we were supposed to be getting a 40 goal, PPG+, gritty ass kicking leader, which is why the team gave him a 3 year $21M+ deal. What we got was an arrogant 60 point floater that was so far up his own ass he tore the room apart making everyone worse that season.

One thing that's always bugged me talking about it years later is people supporting Messier's time here saying 'the Canucks were bad anyways'. This wasn't the '94 Canucks team anymore but they were still only one season out of the playoffs, and had a lot of good pieces in place but a big gaping hole down the middle. Like had we gotten Gretzky in '97, we probably make the playoffs in '97 and '98. The team was essentially:

Gelinas - *** - Mogilny
Naslund - Linden/Sillinger - Bure
Brashear - Sillinger/Linden - Noonan
Odjick - Scatchard - Walker

Lumme - Ohlund
Hedican - Aucoin
Babych - Murzin

Irbe
McLean

Plug in a legit top line center like Messier was supposed to be, or at least a good center with enough $$$ left over to also fix the #2C, and decent chance you're back in the playoffs.
The bottom half of that forward line up was not ment to score goals.
