It was more about his dedication to hockey, than anything else. He took hockey more seriously once drafted.

And when I mean underscouted, I mean just by the Canucks. Historically, they have not valued the BCHL, and until the new regime have shied away from the WHL (Thanks, Delorme)

I believe his skating was considered a big issue. It was likely due in part to a lack of hockey-focused training because of the baseball stuff, and in part to him having grown like 6" in a couple years leading up to his draft, but it was a significant concern.

I think this is a good related article:

A couple of reasons. The BCHL is under scouted in general. Scouts also questioned if Benn wanted to play hockey or baseball.
yeah just to follow up on this, i used to volunteer with a guy who played baseball with jamie benn and he told me he didn't even know benn played hockey - that's how dedicated benn was to baseball

Kobe and Shaq in the NBA is the big one

NHL players are just more reserved and less outspoken so there's probably some we'll never learn about.

Kobe and Shaq both had dominant personalities though, more akin to Miller who thrives under challenge. Petey strikes me as more of someone who thrives under encouragement.

And yeah I guess NHL drama is just less out there in the media compared to the NBA.

The more I understand this situation the more I think it won't work out, which is a shame because IMO with the both of them playing well and with 1 or 2 better d-men they're a cup contender. I've listened to Sakic talk about Forsberg and Jagr talk about Lemieux and Hull talk about Datsyuk and on and on. Sure they're all time great players but they talk glowingly about their teammates. I really do think you have to put your ego aside to get by-in as a group to win a cup. I'm just talking out of my ass though, because we don't have a good sense of what's really going on in the room. It's fun to speculate though.

Do you guys know any star level players who hated each other but won a cup or multiple together?

This is way, way less common in the NHL, but happens in the NBA and NFL more.

Digging back in my memory banks I seem to recall a few Patrick Roy rumours on the Habs with some other high-profile guys, and I think there was something about the ‘94 Rangers room.

I also remember reading something about Gretzky and (maybe) Robitaille back in the day, but can’t remember where. And there were some guys that were just straight up not liked by most teammates: Avery, Hasek, Ribero.

Can’t recall anything quite like the stuff going on in Vancouver right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens, but doesn’t usually leave the room and is handled internally.

I'm starting to sour on this management group. They way they do business is kinda toxic.

It's almost Trumpian how Allvin ramped up the Pettersson vs Miller thing when that's just a sideshow to their absolute failure to construct an NHL level defensive group.

You almost wonder if they've been doing this behind the scenes for a while. It directly undercuts how Tocchet and the players have been trying to tamp this down. Meanwhile Tocchet is on the last year of his deal and Allvin certainly didn't give him a vote of confidence either.

Looks like it's going to be a bumpy road ahead. Maybe it's time for the Sedins to step into the president role and promote Castonguay to GM.

I think most of Nathan Mackinnon's teammates hate him.

Is he a lazy AF and acts out when things don't go his way? By all accounts he walks the talk in all aspects of his career.

like grabbing a big character player like Z, watching him become a big fan favorite, then letting him walk over small differences? wow. You can't mean that ...
that would alienate a fanbase for sure. not possible ...

This team lacks a respected leader who can pull JT aside and just tell him enough. I think this clip with Landeskog and Mackinnon is what I mean.

Honestly, going through Canucks history, probably the only guys with a letter that could go toe to toe with him are maybe Bieksa, Linden (maybe). Having a hard time seeing any of Ohlund, Edler, Henrik, Daniel, Nazzy, Morrison, Hughes, Bo, Burrows, being able to reign him in. Kesler and him likely would just get into a fight or something.

PA is probably a nice gentleman. ..
but seems way in over his head in this ruff n tumble world of (entertainment masquerading as) sports ....

ps..

Gillis was smart, connected ... would he mesh with JR?

lots of NBA examples - lebron and kyrie, chris paul and everyone, KD and everyone, lol

i don't remember it specifically, but there were rumours jagr and lemieux had some tension, no?

they never won together, but the other one with a clash of personalities like this that comes to mind was pacioretty vs pk

While everyone is talking players no one is talking about the team’s character. No one. That’s the difference between the Canucks and everyone else. They don’t have the attitude that they are the best team every time they hit the ice.

This is a horrid stretch of their schedule and they’re laying some turds as a result. That said, they need to find that ‘f*** you, we’re better than you’ attitude on this trip and fast.

Hmmm, go all in and forget the future?

Trade Pettersson for a veteran 2nd line center and a top 4 dman with maybe a pick thrown in.
Sure, why not. Let next year take care of itself. Rumor has it Zibanejad might still be available if they throw in Schnieder. Then they have the first and second line centers locked up for another 6 years. Both will be in their late 30's but the roster spots are locked in.
Keep Boeser and offer him a 7 million 8 year deal with a NMC taking him to age 36 yrs old, who cares if he can still play then, he is already slower so maybe he learns to fight to keep a roster spot.
The team just has to jettison two or three other bottom six players to get him to fit.
Trade away a few more top picks for rentals, hell they won't be helping the team for 2 or 3 years down the road.
They might even be able to trade Willander/Lekkerimaki and a 1rst for O'Reilly or Nelson. There both vet centers that will help right now. The two prospects are years yet down the road and no real help this year. Right now.
