To be more specific I'd say this was more rooted in the polar opposite media treatment of these two GM's. Just something as simple as hockey night in Canada talking about the villainous Mike Gillis Canucks vs the good boy Jim Benning Canucks is going to have a big trickle down effect on the casual fanbase.

I'd still say Benning's longevity came down to him being perfectly willing to have Aqulini in the room as part of the team, where as Mike Gillis and before him Dave Nonis eventually took a 'let me do my job' approach and were promptly fired.
This is more accurate.

In a way this was a lesson in 'playing the game', in that Gillis always had a bit of an arrogant "I'm right, I don't have to scratch any backs' mentality and we all enjoyed it while he was here, but our dipshit local media (and national media) really seemed to resent his refusal to lick their asses.

Benning was a company man through and through. The type of meat shield who would say and do anything to survive. People like him and Weisbrod have a keen instinct for survival and knowing who to please. So the media treated them with somewhat kid gloves.

Gillis was sort of his own worst enemy in a way, but it really points to how stupid the climate of sports 'journalism' is.

That's a much more accurate take. The fanbase was just trying to cope. Myself included. You keep thinking maybe this will work out. Because the alternative is being miserable and knowing you can't change anything. At the end of the day sports is supposed to be an escape from your reality. The obsession over Benning was much deserved as he was epically awful but I think many just wanted to enjoy hockey, not be benning bros. It really is the medias job to hold them accountable and you could definitely argue they didn't.
This is a completely fine approach to fandom. I would even argue it is the most common approach overal.

You just should expect a ton of friction when you try to argue from this position, especially on a board like this where there is a larger % of posters interested in the management aspect of the(ir) team.

Which is really weird considering Burke was here not too long before that.

This is my view as well.

It is absolutely fine to just be a casual fan and want to cheer for the team. It's probably more enjoyable that way.

But you can't then try to have serious discussions with people who want to analyze the team, and basically rebut everything with, "but it could work out, you're too negative!"

And then get mad at posters who respond that the above isn't a credible argument.

Anyway, so you think our current GM is really gonna go after that 3rd overall for Carlson? And what would that even cost for Columbus who seems to want to win next year.

Maybe there’s a world where Columbus likes the assets a Miller trade brings back and that becomes part of a package that includes 11.

Frankly, who knows really. 50 days from now, this team has to be insanely different

Wasting two elite players in their prime with piles of shit like OEL, Myers, The Freaking Poolman, and Ferland who checks to see who's at the front door when his landline phone rings. And have them coached by two minor leaguers like Desjardins & Green.
As someone who's had a very long and detrimental battle with concussions over the past 5-ish years, I'm usually pretty sensitive to making light of concussions

but this made me f***ing laugh out loud lmao

How is a team with Pettersson and Hughes the biggest joke in the league ?

Ridiculous
Having two superstars doesn't equate to much. I look at Colorado as an example of needing a bunch of really solid depth players to have real success. Ie Kadri, Lehkonen, etc

Look at Toronto and Edmonton as examples. Can't even make a conference final with the likes of Matthews/Marner, McDavid/Draisaitl.

They don't have the right mix of depth contributors to push themselves over the top.

They can take Miller/Garland off of our hands. It will instantly improve their team.

:naughty:

There definitely was a shift in this years playoffs with teams losing that had top heavy lineups, as opposed to teams that had balanced lineups (Seattle).

Then let’s trade one of them? I don’t get the logic of letting the team rot

Trade one of Hughes or Pettersson or stop complaining. Not talking about you but the managers

Nobody is complaining..I was just commentating how the top heavy rosters went out this year..Balanced lineups seemed to get more traction...It doesnt necessarily mean its a trend...Ideally you want a combination of the two.

There's no need to trade EP, or QH.

I would assume if we end up with 3OA, extension talks with Petey went poorly. Not sure Columbus would be on his list of teams he would sign with though. And it would definitely be a step back for this team? Which this management group doesn’t seem to want to entertain.

I'm all for it as long as the right trade package presents itself.

It's a boom or bust type of trade, though.

Lots of risk involved, but the alternative is that the team struggles to make the playoffs again next season due to lack of depth.

I don't know, if you read the kinds of things people tweet at her, you might understand her position a little better.

If you think about it, Twitter is really like Cthulhu.

You seek knowledge and information, first you get a little bit, then you dive deeper and deeper, then you can't stop and become addicted, and finally you go insane.

I absolutely didn't feel 'persecuted' or 'attacked.' Like I said, I made an assumption because I was part of the prior discussion and was just continuing it.

But, uh, continue to ignore the original post I had made to you, continue to focus on petty squabbling and continue playing martyr.

This would mean something if you'd actually have discussions with folks or would use your 'accredited sources' properly. A real easy example: "I never said the Canucks were going to be a playoff team."

You just blatantly ignore things outright or misconstrue shit.

It's intellectual dishonesty and you're part of the crowd of hypocrites who complain about 'meaningful discourse' then engage in tactics that actively lowers the level of discourse.
I see more than one poster here claiming they weren’t actually Benning supporters, but they were thrashing back against posting here that they didn’t care for.

Perhaps there is a leaflet or user manual I can use to get caught up to speed as I pass through their gate.
