This is more accurate. To be more specific I'd say this was more rooted in the polar opposite media treatment of these two GM's. Just something as simple as hockey night in Canada talking about the villainous Mike Gillis Canucks vs the good boy Jim Benning Canucks is going to have a big trickle down effect on the casual fanbase.
I'd still say Benning's longevity came down to him being perfectly willing to have Aqulini in the room as part of the team, where as Mike Gillis and before him Dave Nonis eventually took a 'let me do my job' approach and were promptly fired.
In a way this was a lesson in 'playing the game', in that Gillis always had a bit of an arrogant "I'm right, I don't have to scratch any backs' mentality and we all enjoyed it while he was here, but our dipshit local media (and national media) really seemed to resent his refusal to lick their asses.
Benning was a company man through and through. The type of meat shield who would say and do anything to survive. People like him and Weisbrod have a keen instinct for survival and knowing who to please. So the media treated them with somewhat kid gloves.
Gillis was sort of his own worst enemy in a way, but it really points to how stupid the climate of sports 'journalism' is.
