Confirmed with Link: Malkin re-signs to a 4 year, $6.1 million AAV deal (Eklund called it, start singing his praises)

Great news! No way we were going to reproduce his production and we've already committed to keeping the group together with the other signings.

This makes me a happy boy, I don't care if it's purely based upon nostalgia. He's franchise player, he deserves to be a lifelong Penguin and have his number retired.
I'm with you. I think it's the right deal short term with nobody else available to fill 2c. Probably the "wrong" deal in terms of middle-term rebuilding 5 years from now. But long term I think it goes back to the right deal. Sure it may be an emotion/nostalgia based move, but this is a game played and watched by human beings, not robots. It's good for the legacy of the franchise to keep this group together until the end.

I watched Kelly Buchberger, Shane Endicott and Eric Meloche with my own free will and still enjoyed it somehow. Do fans of other teams really think I'll have a problem with watching 39 year old Malkin?

I'm still confused by the sentiment that this will hurt a rebuild in the future. If the legs start falling off of these older players we will be bad which is the point of a rebuild.

I'm still convinced that this team needs a few early picks once this era is over to get back to contending. Petty much every Cup champion has a few top 5OA picks on the roster that they drafted.

Incidentally, does this count as a front-loaded contract? I'm a bit confused by the wording in the CBA about those.

I think the concern is that they are too good to be truly bad, but as they slow down they likely won't be good enough to be the driving forces behind winning a Cup.

Like or hate Malkin and/or the Pens... It just didn't feel right to picture him in any other jersey. The NHLs 101st best player of all time should be a Penguin for life.

Still have to imagine it came down to how the money was structured (zero intention of playing the 4th year, imo) since he ended up taking the same basic deal that was reportedly offered a day before, and Geno feeling like a jilted teen for not being catered to like a king like he'd been the previous contract. /shrug

Dork.

I get that. If you want to rebuild you can't be half bad, you need to be bad, bad. Those top 5 picks will make up the core of a contender. I think it's too far in the future to say what will happen.

Turns out Sid as GM of the team D'n'D campaign was threatening to hit Geno's Lvl 25 Chaotic Good Half-Orc Paladin with an Avatar of Death from the Deck of Many Things (which under 5th edition rules is permadeath) if Geno didn't stop min-maxing his contract and sign the damn thing.

"Take an edible on it, dude. Go fishing. Sign the deal, you idiot." before walking back out the door and getting back onto the charter flight back up north.
