Seems like there hasn’t been much talk about this. Just wanted to hear what people think will happen with him this summer.

If he re-signs, what does that contract look like? If he leaves, where would he go and for how much?

Interesting off-season for the Pens with Letang and Rust also being UFAs. Lots of money to to play with if they choose to shake things up.

The interesting thing is....

Is 3x7 team friendly when he is going to be 36 at the start of the next season? With what he's doing?
Will any team able to contend actually offer that? Does anything think Geno will go to a non-contender for more money?

I mean, the guy has been my favorite active player for 16 years, but with injuries and age, he clearly isn't the same guy anymore.

I see Pavelski's new deal. Now, that is a team friendly one from a guy who is putting up career numbers albeit with much better line-mates than Geno usually sees.

If I am Hextall, and I hear Geno wants 3 years... I start talking 5 millions.

Letang is the question mark he is the one who wants term and will flirt with Montreal and sees himself under paid.
Malkin isn’t going anywhere
Rust getting anything more than 6-6 can go to
Montreal aren't signing Letang .
Malkin / Letang won't be resigned if Pittsburgh fail to advance past 2nd rd .
Rust is the player that is most likely to be resigned if his salary is around 6,000,000 per .
Hextall / Burke won't resign Malkin 36 years old /Letang 35 years old for emotional / sentimental reasons .

LA could be an interesting option. Malkin at this stage of his career probably signs a max of 3 years, maybe 2. He will need to take a haircut off his cap hit, obviously. The Kings don't seem to have any big names for high $ to re-sign (correct me if I'm wrong) and Dustin Brown's contract + Jeff Carter's retention is off the books.

edit: Kempe and Durzi need new deals. Still, with them being RFA I think they could make it work to sign Malkin if there was mutual interest.

Yeah, I think the only way Malkin doesnt stay in Pittsburgh is he wants to go. Some oft mooted situation like Florida lures him down there to help get them over the hump to a cup. If he is good with 7M per, I dont think there is any way the Pens turn that down. But the allure of a new challenge in a sunny clime might be hard to resist.

Letang is a horse of a different color. If he has felt underpaid and wants to truly cash in with the highest bidder, I think he will do that. And should do that. If the Pens turn around and try to replace his game with someone like Klingberg in free agency at a lower cost, or swing a trade for a lower cost PMD on the right side, a la Mike Matheson. If would love it if we could swing something for Sam Girard, but I doubt we've got anything close enough to move the needle for Sakic.

Now, if the Pens playoff "run" is a complete disaster, a la 2019 or 2020, that changes things. If there are bad vibes, and Malkin/Letang want to go elsewhere for themselves, that would mean throwing out the playbook. If that's the case then the Pens probably retain Rust (who I've already written off in my mind as leaving) and maybe try to make a big splash via UFA with the 16M+ they just freed up.

The other aspect to consider is the ownership one. The Pens are a few months into being owned by FSG. If they let both Letang and Malkin walk, even if its the smart play for the money, they will be pilloried.

Florida isn't going to sign an aging, declining, oft injured player, especially with their cap situation.

Whoever signs Malkin should prorate his salary for the 50 odd games he plays a year.

He’s already said he’d only sign in Pittsburgh. I can’t see him leaving for the KHL with what’s happening over there so we already know 99% what’s happening

Montreal will give Letang close to 10 million a year.
Malkin will get a deal to finish his career with Crosby they will probably just be a playoff team nothing more but nothing wrong with that after multiple cup wins.
If rust doesn’t put up numbers in the playoffs I don’t want him back. We already need to retool the blue line and move out petterson and Doumlin. If hextall was brought in for the rebuild he should have moved rust at the deadline for picks. Rakell fits with Malkin and Jake has Crosby salary cap crunch is here

I wonder if Montreal signs Letang, and moves Petry to Pittsburgh to fill the hole left behind.

Klingberg and Girard would be disasters to try to replace Letang with.
