We can’t do that? The rules don’t allow, cap compliance is due on Monday for all teams. The Leafs have to make a decision basically this weekend.
There are ways to kick the can down the road a bit but none of them are great.
They could demote Robertson and Malgin and run a 20 man roster. Then run a man short in the first game so they can use the emergency recall for the second game.

I don’t like that option for several reasons. They will still have to make a trade in a month to get Liljegren off LTIR. Why risk injury running a man short early in the season and lose Malgin off waivers to still have to make a trade later anyway.

They’re going to give up a pick to get rid of one of Holl, Kerfoot or Engvall to a low cap team
I think they will do that as well, but I don’t think it’s out of the question they opt for the emergency recall for game 1. It would be very leafy haha. But ultimately I think they move engvall

I highly doubt they have to give up a pick to get rid of any of the 3.
None of them would clear waivers. The return would probably be disappointing given multiple seasons of a flat cap now but that isn’t the same as them being negative value assets.

They can’t use emergency recall for game 1. You can’t use emergency recall until you have played a game short a player.

If they clear waivers you're partially out of your issue anyways

It’s as simple as this really
People should be looking at the options as picking between:

Kerfoot, Holl, Malgin
Or
Kerfoot, Engvall, Mete
Or
Engvall, Holl, Holmberg

All of Kerfoot, Holl, and Engvall are better than the guys that would replace them in the lineup but we just have better winger depth than we do at centre or defence.

Well we can look to Monday night, SC Bern of the Swiss A league lost 4-3 vs. Nashville who iced pretty much their entire roster minus their goalie. Tuesday night DEL team Eisbaren Berlin lost 3-1 vs. The Sharks who dress many NHLers
The Leafs (with a largely AHL roster) beat Habs (with a largely NHL roster) in pre-season but it means nothing as they are just practice matches and the ones you have quoted are basically exhibition PR events, you don’t think the NHL teams are told not to embarrass their hosts with the score line?

Engvall but only because I don't see what others are seeing in Malgin. Looks like any other bandaid offensive player we used to start when we were a bubble team, and he looks inferior to Tyler Ennis slicing and dicing his way through our bottom 6 like a poor mans Patrick Kane-lite (first ever reference in the universe of a lite version of a poor mans version) until his injury ruined his rise to fame here.

Engvall at the least is guaranteed to be a serviceable bottom 6. Malgin is a tryout level player with question marks at both top 6 and bottom 6.

However, there's a trickle effect to the bottom 6 during the regular season caused by the overloaded top 6 that allows the game to come easier to the rest of the team. In the playoffs this trickle effect seems to disappear, still trying to figure out why, and our bottom 6 guys like Engvall and Mik (surprisingly not Kampf, which solidified him as a permanent piece of the bottom 6) get exposed for being what Mess correctly called as swappable lawn chairs. I'm not married to Engvall being a permanent member of the depth, I am curious to see what other assortments we can construct with the playoffs in mind.

I don’t see it as Engval vs Malgin.
It’s Engval vs. Kerfoot or Holl. And out of those 3 Engval is the easiest to replace internally.
Holl could be replaced with Mete or Benn, and I don't think anyone would know the difference.

Rielly
Muzzin
Brodie
Gio
Liljegren
Sandin
Mete
Benn
Dahlsteom
Kral

Is still deep.

I disagree but at this point it’s all going to come down to preference and opinions and I respect that yours are different than mine.

For me I see Holl as an NHL Dman. Not a great one but a bottom pairing guy on most teams in the league. Mete and Benn are great depth guys but don’t belong on a regular NHL roster.

Can only hope that Malgin proves to be the better bet over the longer haul. I'd have a tough time arguing against Engvall being the superior option for the here and now.

Malgin has been a good story but I'm not sure he'll last because he isn't suited to lower lines. That said he seems determined to compete with Robertson.
