For your input.

Seems like all the debate has been Robertson vs. Malgin to slot into the lineup.

Both have showed up for camp and have stood out.

If Robertson has earned the 2 LW and it is a foregone conclusion we are losing Malgin (who has come in and stood-out, 100%), what about moving Engvall?

Moving him frees up $2.25 and represents a pick or prospect player, vs losing Malgin for nothing or sending a clearly deserving Robertson to the Marlies and not icing truly our best lineup. It also gives us cap space to sign ZAR.

Malgin or Engvall?

Interested in your thoughts.

Isn't this not going to be a problem until JT is healthy at least? They could waive Gaudette, Anderson and Clifford and even Simmonds if they really need to. Haven't seen Malgin yet in pre-season but Robertson has impressed me in the bits I've seen, he should get a shot

IMO Engvall is too valuable to lose. Fast, strong defensively, big. Great PK guy.
15 goals with little PP time.

A 15-20 goal Mikhayev type breakthrough on the horizon.

How have each looked in regular season hockey so far? Until then, how is anyone even going to judge?

We are going to be able to watch each though, so perhaps a couple of weeks into the season, we can give an accurate answer.

Unless an injury pops up in the next 2 games a decision needs to be made before the season if we are going to dress a full lineup opening night.

There just isn’t a way to get to a 21 man roster without a move.
The other alternative would be to play a man short opening night and then use the emergency recall the next night.

Engvall is much, much better defensively than Malgin. About equal offensively IMO. Also much bigger and decently more physical (Engvall isn't very physical for his size, but he's quite a bit more physical than Malgin). Easy Engvall for me, if forced to choose.

I don't see why anyone should be surprised with the pre season Malgin has had , he should look good against a collection of ahl'ers/prospects and a sprinkling of NHL'ers in the lineup going half speed for the most part , especially since he's been playing with Willie who's been flying .

we'll see how he looks after 10 games or so if he's earned/given that opportunity

i didn't mention Roberstson in my post but he also needs to prove it in the regular season

but since he's younger and less experienced so him having a much better pre season than he's had combined with more talent makes me more hopeful than i am with Malgin who's already had opportunities but failed

time will tell however so we'll just have to wait and see how they do

LTIR of Tavares/Liljegren just might get it done. 20 man roster anyway.

Engvall is a classic in house developed Leafs forward.

Can play up and down the lineup and fill multiple forward positions while doing so and is effective in all three phases of the game. The Leafs have developed via the Marlies, a lot of forwards into utility role players like this - Kapanen, Hyman, Brown, Johnsson. If you remember their time with the team everyone of them played on each of the top 3 lines, some on the 4th line even, were given PK and PP time. They were all competent to good defensive forwards as well. Engvall has a bit of additional utility in that he can be a 3 or 4C in a pinch.

Malgin is a guy who's been out of the league for a while and I honestly don't know much about him. I just know the grit and grind fanboys here hate him because we traded away Mason Marchement for him. I'd take Engvall simply because he's the devil I know.

You need to miss 10 games and 24 days if put on LTIR at the start of the year. Tavares is a lot closer than that, Keefe hasn't even ruled him out for the opener. No chance he's put on LTIR.

Perhaps not. ZAR at $850k, and Liljegren on LTIR gives us room to dress Robertson or Malgin, Engvall and the rest of the expected team.

I’m keeping Engvall.

Developed in house and with his size and speed, if he just wanted it a little more he’d earn more opportunities and I think he’d be able to be a 45-55 point guy.

Malgin's got a whole lot to prove before you ditch Engvall for him.

Engvall is only 7 months older than Malgin, for the record.
