Hughes +8
Makar 0

Hughes has 3 pts less with 2 gp less. People giving the Norris to makar atm need to check themselves

Ya my vote would go to Hughes at this time. Doesn't take a night off. So consistently good at his position. Makar has had a handful of poor games this season and several costly mistakes in his own end. On top of that he's slowed down offensively lately. Just 4 assists in last 6 games. Held off the scoresheet in 4 of those games. No doubt he'll bounce back offensively but I don't see Hughes slowing down much.

Makar is near generational for a defenseman. Hughes is just a really good puck moving defenseman. Neither are great defensively. Makar being slightly better.

Makar overall is better. Slightly bigger, faster, better shot, Hughes is a better passer.
Hughes isn’t a traditional shutdown defenseman, but he’s pretty good at it, and by the numbers, better than Makar.

Awful take.

Makar is more physical and has a better shot. Hughes is better at everything else, including playing defence.

Hughes is undoubtedly the 2nd best defenceman in the league.

Makar gave himself enough cushion already in his career that this little “slump” is nothing more than a small wrinkle in what is already a stellar career. This closes the gap between the two ever so slightly but Hughes still hasn’t caught up to him.
If we're looking at just this season, Hughes hasn't just closed the gap between him and makar he's actually eclipsed him. Makar is great but the engine on that avs team is clearly mackinnon and makar is often the beneficiary. Hughes drives play better than any dman in the world including Makar.

It's still early so no one is ready to accept this fact. However, I see this trajectory continuing and by the end of the season the Makar over Hughes takes will age poorly.

Hughes is already the greatest player in Canucks franchise history, IMO. He is the only truly "generational" player they have had - and when I say that, I mean the following: barring injury, he will be the best defenseman in the league across next five+ years (he may not be recognized as such each year, but it will consistently be the case) and, having now reached his prime, every year he plays for the Canucks moving forward until he exits it he will give them a chance to compete by building the team around him provided management are not completely incompetent. He came into the league with special skills and doing special things. However, he has grown tremendously as a player, and I have not seen a player on the team completely dominate the flow of play like Hughes has the past two years in my 30+ years of watching Canucks hockey. He is the best player on team USA, and I've seen maybe 2 or 3 players in the entire NHL do the same over that time.

If they're not paying attention, people need to watch him play. It's special, and it's immediately obvious at this point.

Absolutely. Bure never controlled play and tilted the ice like this, not IMO. And it is all opinion in the end of course. Amazing though that the Canucks have had this history of star players with "special skills". Bure, the Twins, and now Hughes with his skating which sometimes feels like you're watching an alien among men.

Hughes didn’t just close the gap. He went so far into the future that when he comes back to earth present day, his clothes are similar to what they wear in the film Flash Gordon.

Makar is my answer and there is no debate to be had in my mind. Since entering the league he has become one of my absolute favorite players ever and without any doubt my favorite defenseman. His skating is unreal and I watch his highlight reels just to watch his skating.

I like Quinn but he got exposed by physicality last playoffs. Cale is not exactly out there trucking people but he can take and give physicality without looking ragdolled.

It would help if the team wasn’t so dependent on him to be the one moving the puck, but yea the Preds in particular focused on taking the body whenever possible and he looked run down. I think he’ll figure it out though. He is usually pretty good at not being caught by hits.
