Tricky question. MacKinnon is the better player right now. However, Matthews is younger and if you compare MacKinnon and Matthews first 5 years in the league, Matthews has done better. Ask me this question when Matthews is 26 like MacKinnon and I’d probably say Matthews.

Matthews has clearly been the better player at every age group. It’s embarrassing to compare them year by year.

at 23 matthews was Better. Matthews is entering his prime.

matthews has been so much better year on year that he could literally stop playing for 2 years. And still start his season with more goals than mack

Give me the guy who doesn't care to win and still has won as much as the guy who cares, imagine if the guy who doesn't care changes his mind and starts caring?

The actual answer, unsure.

Currently, MacKinnon, as I think he is arguably the best player in the world, but I think Matthews has potential to pass him in the next couple of years.

Matthews rocks; having either of them is awesome; I doubt any fan of either team has watched an equal amount of both players' games so this thread is doing little else besides asking for trouble.

But since you asked, give me Nate. I think 99% of HF posters only ever talk out of their asses when evaluating players. I am not qualified to say who's better. But the impact Nate's had on the culture of the team, that I like. The only thing he cares about is winning. Does Matthews have the same drive?

AM is 11 goals behind NM in career scoring playing like 200 less games. Fine goals arnt everything ?
AM has by by far a higher PPG than NM. Fine points arnt everything ?
NM has almost ALL offensive zone starts ... oh that doesnt matter ?
AM has much higher blocked shots and hits (last season) ... so those stats dont matter ?
AM is elite at faceoffs meanwhile mckinnon is beyond garbage ... oh that doesnt matter..
you going to say AM stats are inflated because he plays with better linemates ? meanwhile NM plays with rantanen and landeskog.
finally what exactly has NM ever won ?

Tough call due to age and contract.

If say they are the same age and same contract. Mack is the clear choice bc of the way he plays, he rarely takes a shift off, while AM sometime mailed it in after scoring a goal or two.

Mack is better and that doesn't mean AM sucks.
Just like if I have to choose Kopitar, Bergenon and Toews, if age and contract is equal. I would pick Kopitar, while some might pick Toews and some might pick Bergenon.

Matthews isn't better than Mackinnon right now

Matthews scored more goals, Mackinnon more points. Points are more important than goals. Defensively Matthews is ahead.

Age wise Mack's D+5 year was as good as Matthews D+5 year with both being 2nd in hart and having great seasons. Matthews first 4 years were certainly ahead of Mackinnons. But it's unlikely Matthews will be as good as Mackinnon was from 19 to 21 the next three seasons.

Mackinnon is better I the playoffs but hasn't won anything yet either

They are the 3rd and 5th best players in the world

Matthews needs more than 1 elite season to pass Kucherov, Mackinnon and Draisiatl imo

I would call on this trade and raise you Kadri and Jost for Kerfoot and Engvall.

MacKinnon:

Points/game: .977

Pretty sure you take Matthews here if you want to start a franchise as he's shaping up to be a generational goal scorer and just into his prime.


It's more fun to compare them right now though.

I actually think they are both getting snubbed somewhat on their defensive game but it's pretty clear that everyone from the writers to the players thinks Matthews was slightly better than MacKinnon this past season.

Until MAC works a new contract with Dubas. Dubas is the problem. The sole problem with the contracts.
