Good luck to you, Mac. Thanks for all you've done for the organization and I'm happy you were able to swing a 3-year deal.

I agree that the 3-year extension to Boll is open for debate, but I'm happy that Jarmo didn't match Florida's offer for DMac. Just like last year with Prospal, he has to separate emotion from business and it's bad business to sign a 4th line 33-year old center to a 3-year deal when you have the prospect pool that the Jackets have. I would have gladly given him a one year deal of $2 million, but I'm not even sure I would have gone 2 years.

Very sorry to see him go. A heart and soul guy who went all out on every shift.

I thought that our fourth line was very, very good. DMac was also a good PKer as well. I'd think that the CBJ could have parted with $1.3 million per year for him for 3 years.

Juxtapose Boll's deal ($5.1 million over 3 years....1.7 million per year) and a $3.9 million 3 year deal for DMac. If DMac goes into the tank in year 2 and needs a buyout, then the total cost of his deal would be $3.5 million or $1.75 million per year-the same as Boll.

Terrible move by the organization.

You tell me where we will find someone like DMac. You seem to know?!

Hockey wise, he's not a team killing loss. Dressing room wise, maybe he's Malhotra part 2.

We said the same things about Prospal though and that turned out just fine.

How many times was it said last year that our 4th line was the line that played the best, got things going, etc? We effed with a major part of our chemistry imo. Hope it turns out well.

We'll see. Whatever complaints I have with Jarmo, failing Chemistry isn't one of them.

All of this. Been pondering those two specific instances and why I haven't really come to a conclusion about letting DMac go.

The difference could be that Malhotra's cap hit would have been about double what Mackenzie's would be.

At the time, Malhotra was younger and playing higher in the lineup, too. I say this not to defend my lack of position on the topic but to refute that your information is pertinent to my thought process, which only concerned locker-room impact.

In other words, I see what you're saying, but I'm not factoring that into my current assessment of the DMac situation. (Also because every time something like this comes up, we get off-topic with comments like "yeah but then we went and gave all Manny's money to an aging and lackluster Sammy Pahlsson," which, while true, is water under the bridge and doesn't aid the discussion at all.)

If DMac was so important to the locker room, and this team misses a 4th liner that much, then Jarmo fails. If this team has strong enough locker room guys remaining (Dubi, Foligno, Horton, Hartnell), and doesn't miss a beat, and the 4th line is improved (maybe even Wennberg/Rychel seeing some time), then Jarmo wins.

I really like DMac, but I think the term was probably too long and Jarmo/JD are sticking to their plan of trying to improve the team. Time to move on from DMac and I wish him the best.

That Boll contract still stings.....

It wouldn't have been smart for us to give him 3 years. We need to make room for our prospects in the next year or two.

BS. Our prospects don't need space on the fourth line, and if they did, Mackenzie could be moved. Now we've lost him and our fourth line will almost certainly be worse. $1.3m per.. :shakehead

You can go ahead and call me anti-Jarmo now. I don't mind it if a few trades don't work out, and if his signings don't immediately pan out. But if $1.3m is too much for D-Mac then I think Jarmo is absolutely clueless.

Its the 3 years. Not the money. What if after this year MacKenzie would lose his speed? Then you're sitting there with a 1.3 million dollar player who is worthless, and given he would be 34 there would be no market. So you're stuck.

I'll miss DMac. I don't agree that he was mailing it in last season. He certainly had tons of hustle in the games I saw. However, it looks like some folks are saying Jarmo got DMac's replacement in a trade for Jerry D'Amigo (Frattin to TOR). Hey, there's a whole thread about that! If that's true, it could be that we still got the best of the situation.

34? Mackenzie should still be faster than most at that point. And its pretty small if it does turn into a bad contract, it would be easy to move.

No, you're not. Unless the concept of buyout escapes this organization.

If the idea of swallowing about a million bucks 3 years down the road on a player who is very effective in his role right now is too harrowing for the CBJ, then some adjustment is needed in their way of thinking. Not saying that this is the case for certain, but there's a very easy way out on a $1.3 million per year deal if the player goes sour.

Also, he can be waived and sent down to the AHL for the final season. The team would save $900,000 (max amount allowed under the CBA) against the cap if he cleared waivers and had to spend the final year of his contract in the minors.

Most worthwhile players over 30 tend to get an extra year or two on their deals where they may not be as effective as they once were. It's a shame that Jarmo couldn't extend this courtesy to DMac. He deserved it.

What if he's not though, what if he turns into no faster than Michael Chaput. Then he's holding up a spot for a younger guy, and like I said, nobody would want him.
