Confidence in a kid they've given less than 40 minutes of ice time so far this season?
Confidence in a kid who wasn't put on the roster until his waiver eligibility was up?
Unless another move happens in the next day or two, there's no urgency to deal Maatta or to acquire a third round pick, so I'm struggling to find another explanation.

And you're also assuming that the person in charge of ice time (Lalonde) and the person who just freed up a roster spot (Yzerman) are in agreement about Johansson. I'm not saying there's evidence that they disagree, but I don't think we can take it for granted that they're on the same page either.

Let's see how this week plays out. If they swing a trade for a defender, then I guess the kid is still in limbo. But if Johansson suddenly maintains more ice time, then maybe there's not only some contention regarding player deployment, but Yzerman is willing to force the issue.

Fair points

I do think there was urgency to to ship out a dman because Motte will be back from injury and Kasper is staying up

Edit: also that’s nice they can use Kane’s bonus on this years cap now

Great deal. Might have got a 6th or 7th at well at the deadline but it Gives Johansson some playing time and maybe some games later on to someone like wallinder

Now move copp

Copp probably won't go anywhere until they buy him out. But they clearly think he serves a purpose so doubt that will happen soon.

Myself and a couple of other posters who have gotten information from people associated with the team have explicitly stated why he was traded (he did something that landed him in the "locker room cancer" bin). It's been said multiple times over several months. But you know that. You've heard (read) it, you just refuse to accept it.
I realize this, I just am not sure whatever it was was justified.

I was kind of happy to get Matta since he was wrapped up in Holland gift wrapping that first rounder to Tampa for KFQ that ultimately became Vasalevski for Tampa. Felt like Closure :)

I wondered at the time if that trade didn't happen would we have likely drafted Matta? Yzerman probably knew a bit about Matta because I am sure they scouted him with that pick at the time.

Best of luck Matta thanks for your service.

Hope lol better start hoping players start shooting pucks off his knee caps and faces and hope they get deflected in lmao
Ahhh, that's what we call the Abdelkader. All Copp needs is to find his "Datsyuk". Too bad Holland isnt the Oilers GM anymore, Copp would be a few unintentional deflections away from Holland biting on a blockbuster trade.

I think it's less that Maatta needed to be the one to go, and more that Holl and Gus are much closer to immovable. And I view it as a silver lining that the move was still made, since it speaks to confidence in the kid, even if the other spare parts are pretty lousy.
If you trade a UFA 8 games after he signs with you, what message are you sending to other UFAs in the future? Gus was never a viable option for this.

I think pretty much everyone is open to the idea that Walman’s off-ice behavior spurred the trade. But I’m never taking internet poster source information as gospel, certainly not when someone’s character is involved. No disrespect to you or anyone else who claims that Walman did x y or z, but I don’t think there’s enough publicly available information to know either way.

Even taking the locker room issues for granted, that doesn’t explain why you don’t try waivers. I’ve yet to see a compelling answer to that beyond Trust Yzerman he knows more than you about the league’s temperature and even if not it’s not a big deal so please stop talking about Walman.
Assume you want him out come hell or highwater. What happens if you finish free agency over the cap by Walman's cap hit alone, waive him, and no one takes him (because you have just signaled something is seriously wrong with him by waiving him). At that point, what is the cost of moving him? More than a 2nd rounder?

What I meant by what I said was I’ve heard explanations, but I don’t think they are good ones because they don’t seem reasonable or justified.

Outside of a warehouse job, or the construction field, or oil rigging what industry that you are aware of wants to keep someone that party's too much?

I think you can bite the bullet for a guy who parties too much if he’s decent at his job. I’d rather deal with that than people who show up everyday but suck like Petry and chiarot. Seriously, these guys are horrible players and every year red wings fans trick themselves into thinking they are serviceable. They only ever look “passable” when getting dragged up and down the ice by our better players.

Petry is fine as a #7 if he uses his experience to mentor young D. I have no defense for Chiarot, but let's be honest no one values him just like our forum doesn't for the most part.
