Rattie in the AHL at 21 (terrible AHL team with not much help):
72311748
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Benson in the AHL at 21 (much better AHL roster):

58134255
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Rattie's 31 goals are much more impressive.

Rattie also crushed his WHL numbers. The only league Benson outperformed Rattie in was the AMBHL. Benson broke Rattie's records there. Anyways I've watched plenty of both outside of this season in bakersfield and I think they play quite alike.
They play nothing alike at all as some others have already mentioned. Benson is a playmaker who reads the game far better than Rattie. You don’t know shit.

Very appropriate username btw.

Lol you all read David Staples and believe him, so I really believe you trying to point out that I'm a self admitted homer is so self defeating... pathetic organization gets equal quality fans I suppose!

Are you somehow surprised that people are calling you out for making up nonsense?

So, is this like a new form of masochism except with public embarrassment instead of pain, or...

Can't wait to see him at training camp. I think that there's 1 LW and 1RW spot available for our rookies if they can beat out the guys we brought in from Europe. Would be very happy to see Benson crack Edmonton's top 9, but if he needs to start the season in the AHL I'm cool with that too.

I think he is good enough and experienced enough to crack the top 9 and he will be part of the reason if the Oilers are better this year.

I'm really concerned about him playing in our top 9.
He isn't a shooter. He's more of a playmaker.
If he somehow makes it onto the 2nd line with Hopkins and Neal it could look good, but if he'd on the 3rd line I see his line's minute being awkward to give out.

He really turned it up in his 1st full year of pro hockey after that roller coaster ride of a junior career. Really glad he's picked up the pace and turning out to be the prospect everyone pegged him to be. Hopefully the Oilers don't throw him to the wolves and leave him to be devoured.

How was his season? Is he projected to be full time in the NHL next season and what role do Oilers fans expect him to eventually play?

I'd put his chances at being a full time NHLer next year at over 50%. I don't see super high upside from him but he could be an effective playmaking middle-6 winger as soon as next season. He's an excellent passer but his skating will likely limit him from being any more than a 2nd/3rd liner.

He’s a talented player but to my eye he just doesn’t really bring enough of any one dimension to carve out an impactful career. He has good hands, and makes a nice pass but he seldom seems to make plays. Since I think his hockey sense is ok, I just think his lack of speed means he just doesn’t get the looks he needs to make use of the skills. I can’t see him ever being a superior penalty killer, again because of his feet. He is sturdy and plays ok in traffic but he isn’t big enough to be a net front presence or “banger.” Finally being healthy, we’ll see if he can pick up a step. It’s make a new man out of him and he would go from being a tweener to a legit player. So far, I don’t see the required athleticism being there. Then again, I thought the same about Yamamoto so hopefully I’m wrong.

Seems like there was alot more hype during/right after his AHL rookie season where he averaged pretty much a point a game. This season his totals dipped a bit and the hype has kind of disappeared.

I watched him alot through junior and have always questioned his NHL potential. I think he will carve out a real solid AHL career.

Can't skate well enough to be a useful NHL player. Too small, too slow, too weak.

He has resorted to roughing people up after the whistles and grinning at them. He is only in the NHL because of our pathetic depth and litany of injuries. I have no idea how he puts up points in the AHL.

Hes a solid player, I like him, but hes probably only an NHLer in the right circumstances. Whens he on a line with some skill, he looks good. He has some unreal passing ability, but would need to rely on other players to mask some short comings

Unfortunate, the Oilers have a brutal bottom 6, so most of the time hes playing with blackholes

Probably a 50/50 chance he splays more than 50 more games in the NHL. But I think hes got a spot on my team in the bottom 6

One major problem with the Oilers, and specifically Dave Tippett- is his complete refusal to play players in situations best suited for them

All Tippett has to do is put Benson- Mcleod- Marody on a line together for 10-15 games (not like there is better options) and it can be resolved once and for all what his future holds

Yet Tippet makes terrible line combos and Benson will end up with zero skill. So it results in this debate on whether he has an NHL future or not. Oh, and thats not even to get into the question of what hed look like in the top 6, and what his passing ability looks like with actual skill

The Oilers have nothing to lose, continue to lose games, and Tippett just does nothing to change things up to see what some possibilites are

Fascinating to look back at page 1 of this thread..almost 10 yrs ago in the '12-13 season - where he put up 146pts in 33 games as a U15 ahead of going 1st OA later that Spring in WHL draft. By all accounts a man among boys at 14 and being pumped as the next super star. That same season an unheralded -undersized-late brithday Dman playing in the same U15 ALberta league was taken as an afterthought in 8th rd of same WHL draft . That 'afterthought' is now the top Defenseman in the world while Benson struggles to carve out a career. ANd yet these '2025 /2026 Draft propsect' threads keep cropping up ...lol..

I think his skating is too poor and he doesn't appear to do anything well enough at the NHL level to be effective.

There is so much variation in players development from ages 17-21

Another good reason why the draft should largely be looked at as pure luck. Anything past pick ~35 is largely a crapshoot

Id bet you could get better results at the draft by:
1) completely axing your scouting department
2) only relying on the consensus drafts from the top scouting agencies (which are available to the public each year). Picking in order the highest-rated prospect available
3) Trading down once each draft to trade a late 2nd for multiple 3rd/4th round picks and acquiring more lotto numbers

My radical hockey opinion is that scouting department can actually do more harm, as tthey have a ton of baises and theyll draft coke machines or big tall defenseman. They overthink the draft wya to much

The best scouting departments just draft the best prospect at the time, regardless of size, position, handeness. So alot of the best teams at drafting are doing the bare minimum to have success. They look good, only because other teams are actively being bad at drafting

Your point? I'm not seeing it here. And clearly you didn't read the thread or follow Benson. The kid has the worse luck with injuries, and the Giants did no favours for him in development. I'm willing to bet if he got traded to a crap team like Arizona, he would get top 6 minutes and be a decent contributor. Hell, they've somehow transformed journeyman Travis Boyd into a top line centre.
