I'm not going to act like Kakko has played well, but as I always say, advanced stats for players in their first year or two in the league are completely worthless, if the stats are bad. A lot of these guys are still adjusting. You look to the talent, to the ability to make NHL plays, to impact shifts. Adjusting to the NHL is hard. If the stats are good, thats not a bad thing. It might mean the player is adjusting well to the league, or maybe the player is very sheltered. A lot of first and second year players are incredibly sheltered, and therefore can compile great advanced stats.
However, I think Kakko's starting to turn a corner with his play. A lot of people said that after 2-3 weeks of games at the start of the season, and I didn't agree, but he looked more impactful on a shift to shift basis on the Western Canada trip. He needs to keep it up, but when this was mentioned before, it didn't make sense to me because it wasn't anything consistent. He might've had a good game or he might've had a game where he compiled a few points. I don't even know how points he had on the Western Canada road trip, it was at least a few, but he looked impactful from shift to shift. You wouldn't mistake him for a journeyman 9th forward. For most of the season prior, you would.
