LW Patrik Laine - Tappara, Liiga (2016 Draft) VI

These are known facts, yes. Well, maybe I could have said that in Liiga OT is 3v3 but you can clearly see it...

Huh? Laine has scored points against every FEL team (that's already 14, at least 12 being better than France), against Germany (2+1) (tier or two above France), against Slovakia (former elite team, this year, not so much, still above France). He also scored a neat assist against USA before tournament.

And against USA he was very very close to score a goal, twice. Created several scoring changes, including a breakaway for Jokinen. Was crucial for that GWG, but yes, did not score. That's already 1 out of 6 games he hasn't scored.

Even in the last summer Laine was scoring against elite teams of SHL and such in the CHL.

There are about 20 teams better than Team France that Laine has scored against.

Using glorified pond hockey as an example of a players puck protection skills is not exactly ideal to prove a point.

I think in the 8:21-8:36 episode he did not display Matthews level one man cycle, because he ended that (and by the way the previous one too, 4:05 one) in a shot that ends up in that thing behind the goalie. If he was as good as Matthews, he'd just do the puck possession part and maybe someone else would do the shooting part.

He's arguing that the 3v3 gives Laine more room to operate and less pressure.

I think it was a very impressive clip though, if he can do that in the NHL then he's going to be a stud.

Glorified pond hockey? Are you saying that Matthews has at any point of his young hockey career played in a HIGHER level of competition as Laine? Let me know where that was at, I'm dying to hear.

Glorified pond hockey? Well, as I said the teams are of higher quality than the national french team... And NHL does have 3v3 OT...

Note in Matthews's highlight he's on ice that's the same size and only has 1 defen... excuse me, forward on him the entire time. Who is a 0.2 PPG NHLer, admittably...

3vs3 is a valid point but I'm pretty sure Matthews also played against France on the bigger rink.

How have I mocked every Laine highlight? All I was saying was that if there were some 5v5 shifts where he was pulling through the legs dekes against defenders and protecting the puck that would be more indicative of his general puck protection. The majority of hockey is played 5v5. Put any player on the ice 3v3 and they could be doing the same things. I will admit he was pulling some nice moves in that clip regardless of how many people were on the ice.

I thought it was obvious in context that I was referring to the points scored in this particular tournament. I guess I should have been explicit.

You may argue that Germany and Slovakia are better opponents in general, but I thought France gave the toughest fight out of the three. Germany looked lost and Slovakia didn't have the defense to put up a fight. France was actually surprisingly strong in their game against the Finns.

The point of my post was clearly to point out the contradiction that Matthews playing well against a weak opponent such as France can't be held against him where majority of Laine fanboys refer to his point totals as an argument for Laine's superiority in this tourney, while each of his points derive from games against weak opponents. There is a double standard right there.

Topic's Patrik Laine. Not Auston Matthews, nor biases, nor fanbases, nor homers/haters, and so on. This applies to any of the respective threads here. Laine's a great prospect and if you can't find a way to discuss him, his play, and his future without the other garbage, you'll find yourself removed at the very least. Bans from Prospects for the next four months are always another option, as these reminders and warnings shouldn't have to be repeated daily when it comes to the top players in this draft.

A new Patrik Laine Interview. I found these parts interesting. He wants to be the #1 pick, he is not only concerned about his points totals but other parts of his game, and he is a focused kid on today's job, not looking too far ahead.

Laine: I think I can be better on the ice. Those points aren't telling everything about my game. I think I just need to be better on the ice and more careful with the puck.

Laine: I don't know. I'm just focusing on these games now. Maybe I'll think about things after these games.

One of the Leafs or the Jets are going to get one heck of a hockey player. And by the sounds of it, an impressive mature young man.
 
The kid's biggest game today. Not expecting the team to win or even Laine to score points here. But if he can keep up with the Canadians and play a solid game I'll be more than happy. Finland will be the underdog and if by some miracle we win, it's against most odds. I hope they'll give Laine a fair chance to prove himself instead of dropping the TOI even below the usual 13 minutes. If the team is down to a goal or two, it's certainly going to be interesting wether the coach trusts him enough to give him a chance to try and tie it. Going to be long next ~11 hours!
 
I love how Barkov has clearly been teaching few Jagr-things to his Tampere-fellow Laine, when it comes to corner play.

This. Can't wait for the game. Altough one point for Laine would be like the greates thing in a while.

I think he might put on a show today.

The Canadians have walked through this tournament with ease. Finland might catch them off guard.

Yeah, I think it's the first true test to both teams. Canada being the favorite, but I think Finns have a real shot at winning. I'm just excited to see McDavid and Barkov play. Absolutely love both.
