So far I can say, he's good but doesn't look to be on the level as Panarin now or even the Panarin from a few years ago.

Considering the hype I wouldn't say so, similar situations as Panarin had in the KHL. Look at Gusev's numbers this season, it's normal to have high expectations.

He'll excel in North America, he is only one year younger than Panarin with around 300 khl games under his belt.

Another 25-year old competing against 18-year olds for rookie of the year again?

I would say it kind of closes the book on him coming over at all? Unless he terminated the one year left on his deal to sign a one year deal. I don't imagine Tampa Bay is interested in waiting another 3-4 years for Gusev.

I guess it's the way I am wired but I'd always want the highest level of competition possible.

He can earn a lot of money in the NHL if he proves himself too.

I honestly don't think there was any question in TB picking him up. I don't think it was ever publicly stated by the team, but most of us assumed once his deal was up, he'd be coming over here. Kucherov is good friends with him and has said he's spoken with Yzerman about bringing him in.

If Gusev signs a multi year deal, I think the chance of him coming over is done. He's cemented himself as a star in Russia, so unless he can make similar money in NA, there's not much incentive for him to come unless he has the drive (like Kucherov did/does) to play in the best league against the best competition.

Any chance Tampa would trade Gusev? Would love him on the Oilers if we could get Kovalchuk

to me gusev is a kind of player who will have to prove himself in the ahl first. taking in account that rotenbergs and timchenko will throw bags of money at him, i think i'd be moronic for him to go to the ahl and play for hamburgers there with a vague hope of making it.

small, soft, to me he's more of a complimentary player. heck knows how he will look on the nhl rink size. the ahl is a way to go. no questions for me here. but it's tampa's choice, agreed.
Are you serious? Those numbers in the K and he must prove himself in a weaker league?

Maybe Tampa agrees with you, which is why they've not made a strong offer.

I think Gusev is at worst a solid second line winger in the NHL.

he's no better than omark. is he a solid second liner too? playing on the stacked team against teams which are ten/twenty times poorer might be deceptive
