After a bit of research, it appears that in order for an NHL player to be eligible for the AHL playoffs, they had to be on the AHL roster on trade deadline day, that is why so many NHL players were demoted and immediately recalled on that day. If they are signed and go direct to the AHL they are exempt from this rule and can participate. In most cases the team will need to let them burn the year on the contract to get the player to sign, so AHL playoffs are out of the question.

Yes, is or was called the clear day roster

Well, it's settled then.

Didn’t an almost exact tweet come out when he said almost the opposite that the was confident he was ready to make the next step?

I’m lik 95 percent sure.

Which one is fake.

Edit. Looks like this is real. But last week he said he is looking at the next level. His size and strength are there

“I’m ready to jump”.

Just last week. I think he is probably a confused kid sure. But his team should tell him not to tip his hand

Nothing wrong with another year of college. If both the team and himself felt he was ready, I would've been fine with him signing. But if there's any doubt at all, no reason to jump to the pros right away.

I'm dissapointed, but realistically, I don't see how this hurts his development. Won't have a few key guys around so we will see what he can do with a new set of teammates.

Smart move by the guy. 1 more year of developing every aspect of his game instead of feeling the rush of pro-games. Big boys need time to grow into their size, look at Elmer Söderblom what 1 year extra of development can do.

I think he should probably stay another year at Minnesota to develop more.

He could make an impact on an average team in the bottom 6, especially if given some PP time. But for the Leafs, I don’t see where he would fit in right now. Team is playing excellent and the only spots up for grabs are on the 4th line. There are veterans like Spezza and Simmonds to placate as well as recently acquired Blackwell and signed Abruzzese. Not even including Kase when he comes back.

There will be more opportunity for roster spots next year/this off-season with some players very likely departing… but there are a few matured leaf prospects that are more prepared to grab hold of those spots. Playing in the AHL wouldn’t be so bad, but why not stay in college at that point and make the jump this time next year?

I know everyone says pump the breaks on every leafs prospect but this guy looks like Auston Matthews when he played for Zurich every time I see him play only difference is he loves to hit.
Potential is too high to sleep on.
Lol this is an outrageous post and is exactly why we are saying pump the breaks. You do realize how significantly more impressive Matthews season in Zurich was to what Knies is doing in NCAA. If Matthews had played NCAA he most likely doubles Knies production.

I’m not saying it’s more impressive or equal matthews is the best scorer in the nhl. I meant more stylistically. I watched a lot of both of them the stick handling and shot look like he idolized matthews his ability in college was impressive he’s not going to be as good as Auston 99.99% but he didn’t look phased by college hockey and is massive his skill set looks to translate well to the pace of NHL so he shouldn’t be slept on. If you watched games of Auston with Zurich or Gopher games this year you would see what I mean.

Uh? He's producing worse vs college kids than Matthews did in a much more difficult league against professionals while a year younger.

It is a pretty ridiculous comparison.

Hope for a quality top 6 complimentary LW winger (actually a need to the Leafs), and please, never compare him to Matthews again. He does not look like Matthews. Matthews in my opinion was the 2nd best prospect at his draft date since 2014, and was a 40 goal scorer in the NHL (first d+1 rookie to score 40 since Lemieux I believe) at the same age as Knies was this season. Knies is a good prospect, but compared to prospects in relatively recent Leafs history Matthews is as can't miss as can't miss gets (at worst without injuries he's likely a 2nd line center), Marner was a way better prospect and one of the best CHL players of the past decade, and Nylander was notably ahead at the same point. Those guys were all top 10 picks, and lived up to their draft positions. Knies is a really nice player who flashes good skill for a guy of his build, but this guy isn't can't miss.

I'm curious if he winds up with Cooley if he stays. A Knies-Cooley-Huglen line would be really interesting to watch.
