In my opinion, there are far bigger concerns about Mantha than his birth date. Like his consistency. Don't get me wrong, he's a very talented player, with a rare blend of size, speed, and skills, but those issues are major concerns. The time I saw him play he scored a hattrick, but he was completely invisible during every other shift. He also scored a hattrick in 5 minutes against St John's later that week, but seemed completely uninterested for the other 55 minutes.

He's got a ton of talent, but doesn't show it most of the time. His defensive game for the most part is weak too, but at times he looks great, backchecking hard, getting in passing lanes, and working hard along the boards. While being physically imposing, he doesn't play physical very often. Notice a trend here? He only competes hard sometimes. He lacks consistency.

Whatever team drafts him though is getting one hell of a goal scorer, an incredibly talented player.

The difference is that Monahan put up just as impressive numbers in his 17 year old season. He scored 78 points in 62 games compared to Mantha's 51 points in 63 games.

I do like Mantha. But the fact that his 17 year old season was nothing special should be worrying to scouts. That's all.

His second half last year was as good as this year's first half fyi.

2011-12 season:

11 points in his first 38 games
40 points in his last 25 games

This season, he has 37 points in 23 games.... 40 goals im his last QMJHL 48 games

A 51pt in 63games / 4th on team rookie season with 4 in 4 during playoffs isn't groundbreaking but it is respectable. He made big strides as the season went on.

I agree with That though. His consistency issues keep him from being top 8.

All and all a very interesting prospect. Certainly has the physical tools, but we'll see. Definitely a guy worth taking a chance on in the late first/early second.

Full credit for his production, and has an interesting combination of skills I suppose, but I actually don't find him to be that great of a hockey player. People have mentioned his inconsistency/tendency to disappear, and I agree, but that isn't my main issue with him. No matter how extensive his tool set seems to be, I find just about every one of his skills to be "dull". Will he find a role as a bottom 6 player somewhere, or maybe end up a key player somewhere in minor pro? I just don't know, but I think that's his absolute ceiling. I'd be a bit surprised, and disappointed in box score specialty scouts, if he actually gets picked in the top 2 (or 3 - maybe 4) rounds.

I'm not sure if this is serious. Mantha's wrister and one-timer are among the best in the QMJHL. He is a big body with a powerful skating stride. Sure, he has weaknesses, and 1st round might be pushing it, but he definitely has solid NHL potential.

Maybe a bit harsh, but serious. He may have solid bottom 6 potential, like I said, but I also think that's his absolute ceiling. I also thought he looked fundamentally flawed across the board next to just about every forward on the ice during the QMJHL/Russia clashes in the Subway Series. Looks great at times in the Q, though, for sure; like Grigorenko, only with less than 1/2 of Grigorenko's talent.

I don't think it should be worrying on its own. If Mantha was 2012 eligible, he would have the cache of being the youngest player in the draft, a designation which by itself adds to the hype of certain players. Those September birthdays cut both ways.

I think what matters to scouts is positive development. If Mantha was the same player this year as last year, then of course his late birthday would be a source of concern, but context is everything. He is still a second-year junior who has taken a significant step forward and appears to have a lot of projection left. That's what matters when evaluating where to draft him in 2013, not what might have been if he was 2012-eligible. There are certainly more extreme cases of players with late-birthdays benefitting from that extra year, and many of them panned out (a guy like Eric Staal and Nicklas Backstrom come to mind).

I fully understand its unfair because of the styles, but I am making my own personal rankings, and agree or disagree with me, I have Lazar at around 10-12. And with rankings, you have different players with different styles.

I haven't seen Mantha play but from everything I read and hear, he has elite scorer, great size, and great skating. All of these things are the makings of a top 15 pick. So I'm wondering where to put him on my rankings.

I like to read scouting reports and make a mock draft out of that. :shakehead

Anyone could look like a top 15 pick if you just read reports, they focus mostly on the positives of a player.

Disagree.

The reports that are worth reading are the ones that discuss both positive and negatives.

And through these reports, you can get a better understanding on the type of player Mantha is, his strengths and his flaws.

EDIT: Obviously, live views is the only real way to go about it, but hey, for the sake of being entertained and keeping our season busy, reading reports and making a personal draft ranking is always fun.

I can get a better understanding of Mantha by watching him and you can pretty much figure out his strengths and weaknesses. But yeah if you aren't able to watch him play because you don't get the Q some scouting reports are okay.

I absolutely love Mantha and don't see the hate on him with scouting rankings. He might be near invisible at times, but gets the job done. Love players like that, and his knock is his style of play which is unfair to him. I honestly see him as a top 10 player.

Was about to write this as i was reading the thread...

Mantha, to me, is a future powerfoward; yesterday i saw him 2 or 3 times race by the outside and cut to the net, with a player almost on his back; using is size and speed. (a la Cole)

He only got 1 assist but he hit the post twice

i have never seen mantha play, but your description sounds a lot like johan franzen.

A. Mantha has no relation to Moe Mentha, he's the grand son of André Pronovost though. It would be great if he could Play on the same team than his grandfather, Geoffrion and Mantha in the same Habs line-up!

Sonds similar to Getzlaf when he was coming out, a big reason he fell was his compete level. He could physically dominate games or go out there and not try. Potential to be physically dominant is there. At the end of the day he produced though.

I think this guy could end up a steal for someone

Went to hight school with tony! Play hockey all 5 years on his line we were tearing it up

Hes just a smart ass lol not a leader type person, but very skilled hockey player

Reminds me of Benoit Pouliot when he was coming out of the Q. His work ethic is far too questionable for my liking.
