How has looked so far in other aspects of his game, like defense, compete level, etc.?

Caught the game only halfway through the second, so I can't comment on the whole game. But complete domination for Val d'Or. Mantha's line has played in the offensive zone about the whole time, so I can't comment on the rest for today.

As for his season, I think his compete level has been just fine. Still blows defensive coverage from time to time but not as bad as last year. I've been pretty vocal in this thread, so you can go back a bit and read some of the comments made before.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

Just to resume my thoughts, I thought last year the compete issue was way overblown. Sure some games you didn't hear his name for half the game but then he'd score 2. It all depends on your expectations. Some see a big man and expect him to play a Lindros kind of game. That's just not who he is. He plays a sniper's game a la Stamkos or Lupul. For me, it's expected that you won't hear his name for some stretches. That said, this year it hasn't been the case at all. He has been involved in the play at all times and he's really the driving force behind Val d'Or's offense. He has points on 1/2 Val d'Or goals and that doesn't count goals for which he doesn't have points but led the other team to cheat on his side.

Also, you won't see him lay big hits. There's always a few occasions in games when he could send the other D 3 rows into the crowd but that's not who he is. He'll pressure the other team but once the play is done, he won't "complete his checks". Which, I'm totally fine with but obviously will get criticized for it

He had and still has defensive issues at times. What I noticed most last year was that he'd be all over the place and would leave his man open. This year, he has improved quite a bit on that. Still has some brain cramps like last week I think leaving his man open on the point.

Add an assist to Mantha.

And this is why everyone should have a class in stats.

The sample sizes in September and November are both too small to make any claims that his ppg is dropping. If this were three equal sample sizes, sure you could make this claim, but with 10 of 18 games being on one month and one sample being only 3 there isn't much you can pull out of this.

Aw, you can come up with statistics to prove anything, Forty percent of all people know that.

1 goal tonight, puts him at 8 PPG in 21 games (13 in 67 games last year). Anyone see how he looked?

Another 3 points for Mantha tonight (1+2). Brings him to 24+29=53 in 22 games. 2.41 PPG. Only has one game all season without a point.

Watched the first period. Two teams that like to control the puck. Baie-Comeau doesn't give a lot of space to the other team. Close period if not for 2 bad plays defensively by Gazzola and Gélinas.

On the bad side for Mantha. On the second Baie-Comeau goal, he got caught standing in front of his goalie. The play is on Gélinas no doubt about that and bit a of lucky goal all in all.

On that play, Mantha came helping his D behind the net as just before BC had a 2 on 1 or close to. As Mantha was going back to the point, Gélinas with the puck along the board, makes a soft pass, puck gets deflected to Poulin (BC's D) who simply takes a shot that gets defelected off Gamelin who was standing near the goalie. Play happened quickly but Mantha should have taken Gamelin out on that play instead of standing there trying to block the shot from the point. Not to mention that he actually screened his goalie on that play, not that Tremblay was going to make the save but anyhow.

Also, the ice surface in Baie-Comeau is smaller than your average Q rink. Added to the fact that Baie-Comeau doesn't give any space to work with. They're really good at cutting passes. On one play Mantha got caught going too fast in towards the offensive zone as his D wasn't out yet of VD's zone. BC's player quickly intercepted the pass that ended up leading to nothing, but Mantha has to be a bit more careful in those occasions not leading his D to dry.

Mantha's line was matched by Zykov line for the most part. Apart from those 2 negative plays, good period for Mantha and his line. Zykov's line really likes pinning the opponent down in their own zone cycling the puck. Mantha and his line did a good job making short and quick passes taking the puck out as quickly as possible and then not forcing turnovers entering BC's zone. Mantha used his speed at times to dump the puck in and reetrieving the puck in BC's zone.

Mantha had and created the only chances offensively for Val d'Or. Baie-Comeau leaving no space so far to Val d'Or.

After two, easily the worst game I've seen so far from Mantha this year. On the 4th BC goal, BC on the PP, Mantha covering the point (on Meloche's side). Mantha had the chance to clear the zone but Meloche beat him, keeping the puck in, Vanier gets the shot, rockets one that gets tipped in. That said, Mantha could have easily broke in for a breakaway on that play as well, so high-risk, high-reward play there.

Earlier in the period, Val d'Or had a 5-3, nothing going right for them, it all ends in the neutral zone with Mantha making a soft pass before going to the bench. Mantha was clearly mad at himself on that play.

Mantha got a bit lucky on his goal. Chenevert, who's a solid defensive d-man, made a poor pass, intercepted by Marcotte who passed right away to Mantha. Goalie was out on that play, wide open net for Mantha who didn't miss.

That said, it's that kind of game where you say. Well, he has 1 goal and 1 assist so far (could have been 2 if not for a correction), but he's not playing that well. That said, all Val d'Or can create offensively goes through him as well, so it's not like he's not doing anything good offensively. Baie-Comeau leaves him no space in the offensive zone. He's given the role on the point on the PP but sometimes I'd like to see him get a chance getting closer to the net clearing up any rebound chances. Val d'Or has Gélinas and Gazzola who can take some good shots already, I'd like to see Mantha move a bit more on the PP getting more chances near the net.

Also, although Baie-Comeau is outworking Val d'Or, time of of posession in favor of Val d'Or. They have the puck most of the time, they just can't create good offensive chances and just make bad plays at times defensively and Tremblay gave up a softie to start the game.

And Mantha has a booming shot ;), injured 2 BC players so far trying to block shots.

In the third period, we saw the best and worst of Mantha on the same play. Mantha controlling the play in the offensive zone, makes a soft pass to his D, BC takesover goes the other way. Mantha rushes back, gets the puck back, skates the whole ice, goes hard to the net and draws a penalty. Kind of night it was for him, some good and some not so good plays.

Late in the period, Val d'Or down by one, Mantha takes a swift shot from the blue line, goalie sees and hears nothing, puck is deflected and Val d'Or ties the game. In OT, on the PP. Mantha created a few chances, ends up with an assist on the winning goal.

Overall Val d'Or controlled the play for most of the game. Baie-Comeau ends up taking many penalties not for undiscipline but simply because Val d'Or had the puck for most of the game. Val d'Or struggled creating scoring chances for most of the game but did well in the third and made the most of it.

Val d'Or was playing on a back-to-back in Baie-Comeau, which isn't easy. They played a more risky game overall. In the game for Mantha, you like his speed, his shot and vision. You do not like soft plays with the puck. I understand he's playing a lot and in a back-to-back against a tough defense but he has take better care of the puck and he knows it. He was mad at himself on a few occasions.

Third game in 3 nights tomorrow for Val d'Or again in Baie-Comeau.

Just stopping by to let you know Mathletic that I really appreciate your updates. I was high on Mantha before the draft and I'm very eager to see how he develops.

Is there any choice of him making the Wings soon - or is he going to be stuck in the minors for a while?

He was a late b-day, no?...so this is his last year in the Q (unless they send him back as an OA, which i'd doubt)???

He won't go back for an overage, but would be surprised if he doesn't start in GR (AHL) next year with the way the Wings handle their prospects and all their guys out of options next year.

Also in terms of guys he would compete with that have the ability to be sent back to the AHL, Jurco is currently on fire in the AHL and coming along nicely.

Nyquist (who should be up full-time later in the season), Sheahan, Ferraro all need a spot or will be exposed to waivers. Callahan might get a role in depth or the press box next year.

If it was any team other than the Wings, he might stand a chance...

He'll finish out this season in juniors for sure, and probably will get the call-up to the Griffins for their playoff run once his junior season is over.

Next season is the very earliest we'd see him on the Wings, and even that is extremely unlikely. Probably at least a full season in Grand Rapids before its even on the table.

Hope his development continues at this rapid pace, he is the exact mold of player the Red Wings need in their lineup right now.

He'll start out in GR for sure, but he might end up being one of the first call ups. Its hard to gauge though because Detroit takes time with their prospects. But on the other hand they have taken time with forwards like Nyquist and Tatar because theyre so small and needed to get bigger to handle the NHL. At 6'5 Mantha will probably be on a shorter time table.

I watched only the second half of the game today. I'll record the full game tonight. Val d'Or looked completely gassed today. That was their 3rd game in 3 nights, playing for the second time against a tough defense in Baie-Comeau and it showed in the second half of the game. Val d'Or's big guns play almost half the game, so at some point something's gotta give. Whenever the Girard-Zykov line was on the ice, they pinned Val d'Or in their own end for the whole shift. Each time these 2 are on the ice they just put a terrific effort. They work great along the boards and if they lose the puck (especially Girard) there's just no giving up, he's back pressuring the other team forcing them to make a play.

Back to Mantha, quiet game overall. Baie-Comeau was physical with him all game long, didn't have any room to work with, had to do it all himself today, no one was open really. Still had some good scoring chacnes, ends up with an assist, +1. No soft passes today, unlike yesterday.
