It’s a nice gesture but something tells me he would have turned it down if they hadn’t sprung it on him as a surprise.

Dionne is/was somewhat of an ambassador for the Kings (showing up to alum events and such) and he and Luc are close. Every team employee from management to the receptionist gets a ring. So why not someone in Dionne’s position? It’s cool but not as special as getting your name engraved, which he obviously didn’t.

I had always heard of he was basically the director of goaltending, meaning oversees coaches, scouting, development etc when it comes to that position. He might know a thing or two about goaltending.



IIRC it was a gift of sorts, since he never won it as a player and the team wanted to give him a thank you for all of those years of high level play.

Yup, his brother Leo is more the hands on guy/coach that meets and works with all the goalies in the system, but also scouts. Lu coordinates with Leo and he said they talk everyday. Lu also scouts.

As a former player who failed to win it, how do you allow yourself to parade around with the cup, eating pasta out of it, because you "won" it as what, like assistant to the executive vice president of player development? Coach or GM fine. He's entitled to do what he wants and feel how he feels but I couldn't do it.

yep, ran into him at the prospects tourney that was in Raleigh a couple years back, he's heavily involved in the goaltending development for Florida. I mean is "special advisor" really all that different from "goaltender development coach" in this context? Would ANYONE have qualms with the later being on the Cup?

First of all, yes, I think goaltending coach is pretty far down the list of people who can reasonably take much credit for winning a cup. But even so, if you didn't have a prominent playing career like Luongo did then fine, pat yourself on the back and call yourself a cup winner.

When you played in the NHL and failed to win it, I can't really see myself flipping the mental switch and referring to myself as or viewing myself as a "cup winner." For me it would never feel genuine.

No hate though, it's fine if he feels it's earned and deserved, I can't put myself in his shoes or really know what work he actually does.

It is interesting - when I think LA Kings, my association is not Gretzky, but Dionne. His name being synonymous with the Kings has never left me. Certainly would have been nice for him to have "earned" a ring as player or as an employee of the team in the early to mid 2010s. Was a good ambassador for the game when he played and continued to be so after.

That’s why I asked what his role was at that point — if he was still actively working with the team, even as an ambassador, it makes perfect sense. Like you said, just about everyone in the organization gets one for being part of the overall push to a title.

The way it was framed above made it sound like he was living life as a memorabilia store owner and they showed up with a ring for him. That’s where it would be lame. Imagine the Sharks winning the Cup 20 years from now and hunting down Joe Thornton to be like “hey, here’s that ring you never won!”. Even if well intentioned, it would come off as really misguided. It would be different if Thornton were still actively involved in the org, though.

lol what a weird way to look at it. It’s an organizational success but yeah the skaters win the cup. I always thought it was corny that so many personnel gets rings when they at best Indirectly contribute to the win. I think it’d be nice if some things was for the skaters exclusively since at the end of the day they’re the ones who win it.

Luongo did have a say in drafting Devon Levi who Zito turned into Reinhart who happened to score the game winner in game 7, if I'm remembering correctly.

Zito made the trade not Luongo. Do you think Luongo called the sabres for him,hyped up Levi, and made the trade happen? Levi hasn't even played in the nhl and Reinhart went for what a top 6 player who has potential to do more on a contender usually goes for a first+ top prospect. Reinhart looked much better out of the Sabres orginization and is going to get paid for it. It was a good trade for all sides. Florida got better, Buffalo got pieces for the rebuild, and Levi gets a shot to be a goalie someday. My opinion is Luongo had little to do with that trade, but if you feel he did that is an opinion. If you link some sources showing Luongo was the reason for levi+1st for Reinhart I will give him credit.

Like organs in the body, everything is connected. The success of the franchise is more than just the players and everyone deserves to be recognized. People put in long hours in sports for not necessarily a lot of pay. I know because I’ve done it. The players get their names engraved. That’s their exclusive thing.
