Bergevin said he would like more offense. 2 of 3 top-48 picks don't even have an above-average offensive ceiling... What?

Naturally, its common for people to confuse a GM's comments about a teams CURRENT needs and what a team is doing via the draft which is a separate part of the business and team building process...

When a GM says we need more offense, and then 5 days later in the draft does something else, well then its pretty easy to understand, you dont fix a team for NEXT year during a process that teams use to build teams throughout many years...

I understand you want to draft alexis Lafreniere at 47 and at 48, really I do, but for NEXT years team, you go trade and free agency route... you dont use a draft you are not top 10 in to fix stuff NOW

I used to think this way but all I can think about is all those year including last one where we had a small skilled team and no physicality for so long.

I'm happy they've atleast acknowledged what they were doing wasn't working and are Changing it up.

The problem is that those small skilled team were bad small skilled teams.

Wilson and Byfuglien were both drafted by Washington and Chicago respectively, and played big roles as power forwards in their cup runs. And LA, really? Kopitar, Brown, King, Nolan, Clifford...That team was one of the heaviest we've seen in the last 25 years.

Byfuglien and Nolan were drafted in the 7th and 8th round, miss me with that shit.
I already mentionned Wilson.

Kopitar, Brown are skill players first, physical second. (Is Kopitar even physical ? Wouldnt say so. Hes big.)

Dwight king and Kyle Clifford are both 4th liners and are far from good picks at the spots they were taken, theyre 4th liner for christs sakes. Tatar, Lehner, Silfverberg, Dumoulin, Orlov were all pick a few picks after Clifford, you really believe the Kings dont win the cup without Kyle f***ing Clifford ?

Most importantly, those teams all had their skill players.
Doughty, Kopitar, Quick, Voynov, Keith, Toews, Kane, Sharp, Saad, Hjalmarsson, Seabrook, Ovi, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Holtby, Carlson, Orlov, etc.

Somehow theyre skipping steps here.

And I wouldnt give a rats ass if they went after those guys after the 2nd, its a crap shoot after the 2nd, nobody cares, go for your big dudes if you want. For f***s sakes, go for skill in the top two rounds, try and hit a homerun... This team hasn't had a single star forward since Mats Naslund. MATS. f***ING. NASLUND.

Pure power.

Have you ever watched him play? If not, why are you making comments without any knowledge of the player?

Not that I’m a hockey scout or anything close to that, but I saw him play at least 15-games this past season at Avon Old Farms, Deerfield Academy, Taft, Fairfield Academy and other prep schools near me. He needs to work on his skating and will be able to do so at BU, good IQ, defensively aware, and mean. Has a quick release, powerful shot, and never say die hustle - which is rare for 17-year olds who are so much bigger than their opposition. He’ll likely play at 215-230 and may grow another 1-2 inches to 6’3 - 6’4

Is he a guarantee? No, but low probability he’s another Connor Crisp IMO. This was a good pick, I suspect another team was going to grab him which is why Habs grabbed him instead of waiting for #57 or 3rd round.

No I haven't seen him once and I have that strong of an opinion on him regardless. Miss me with that shit too.

People being so unhappy so soon MINUTES after a pick just kills me lol, it honestly never gets old here

at least SEE what he does in college first before freaking out and giving up, these are the rounds where players are projected in 4-5 years anyway

For crissakes after the top 15 players you might as well be throwing darts on a dart board...what comes will be, win some lose some

10g 15 a first year in college would be a very successful ncaa rookie season

Complaining for the sake of complaining about this of all things really just exposes how miserable certain people constantly are

RigHT aFtEr ThE pIcK !1!!

No, its not right after the pick. Its been 25 years of being a f***ing horrible organisation. Im almost 30 and have never seen the Habs be contender for more than two years in a row.

Its complaining because this team sucks, it has sucked, and it will continue to suck until this management is Romanov'd.

Tampa paid a high price to acquire them

Pittsburgh paid a price to acquire them.

Washington drafted/paid a price to get them.

St. Louis had some on the back end, but most upfront were acquired and not overall costly, so you get them.

Yeah, lets pay that price when were able to pay that price, not before we even need it.

Pretty interesting interview of Luke here from when he played for the Buffalo Jr Sabres a couple years ago. Looks like he billeted with Andrew Peters. Craig Rivet and Marty Biron in this clip as well.

The Jamie Benn comparison may have originated here from Rivet, who had apparently watched a few of Luke's games.

Byfuglien and Nolan were drafted by teams that won the cup. You made a blanket statement and are now adding qualifiers after the fact, having been proved wrong.

Kopitar, Brown are skill players first, physical second. (Is Kopitar even physical ? Wouldnt say so. Hes big.)

Again, not the point of your original post. LA won the cup with players they drafted and played. They get the benefit of the doubt.

Agreed. Again, this nuanced opinion was not reflected in the post that I replied to.

If you share your opinion rather than make blanket statements that are easily falsifiable, you might find you have more in common with other posters and get into fewer disagreements.

BU has one of the top programs in the NCAA though not the same since they lost one of the top coaches in NCAA hockey history in Jack Parker and then his replacement in Quin to the NHL. But they usually get top recruits so we'll see how it goes.

Yeah I guess you can say whatever you want when you want to be dumb about things.

Dont make me lose my time, or better yet, value your time better, bad troll.

72nd on Wheeler's list:

Doesn't have his brother's speed but he's meaner and stronger. He can impose himself in a game through his relentless pressure or net drive. Won't wow you with his vision or passing. Could be a good depth piece.

That post is plain arrogance. Please stop explaining obvious banalities to me. Of course the draftees wont help next year. Point is, we need offence since the 90s. Just pick the highest offensive upside and call it a day. One will pan out eventually. I thought they said more picks meant more darts at the board... You don't make safe, boring picks when you have lots of chances to select. Especially when youve been a mediocre, bland team since decades.
More darts mean you can take a chance at a guy like Poirier and his amazing hands but poor defense and hope he figures it out, instead of acting prudent and taking low-ceiling players. We need top-end skill, and nothing about Tuch is high-end except his "character" and physicality. Meanwhile some teams pick small talented guys like Aho and Kucherov in the 2nd. They also pick busts, but at least they take a swing and sometimes hit a homerun. Hence why I said I like the Mysak pick. Like Biondi, Farrell too. Not a fan of the rest.

Id bet you all my checking account that the highest pts/game CHL or Euro forward on the board at 48 will have a better career. Not because I'm a stat watcher, but because he actually shown he could produce instead of crossing your fingers that a dude that didnt have an exceptional production in juniors will all of a sudden be a scoring threat at a higher-level. Muh tools! Yeah... No. You gotta have tools and big numbers. At least in the 2nd round. Pick these low-ceiling middle-sixer in the mid+ rounds. Timmins do the opposite, safe picks in the high-paying rounds, and gambles with later guys that have statistically barely a chance to see NHL ice. Sick.
