I want the Oilers to add some size, grit, and toughness on D for a middle pairing D man.

In my view, Luke Schenn is the best option in terms of value, contract, and fit.

Other options would be a guy like Edmundson, Gavrikov, or a Gudas type. Soucy was the top choice to my eyes before the season but with the Kraken playing well can’t see them moving him.

Someone of the ilk of the players mentioned are what’s being targeted here.

Given the above, what is the value/ask for Luke Schenn to the Oilers?

He is a dirt cheap, pending UFA, ultra physical, veteran RHD, with Stanley Cup winning experience, currently playing well paired with a young mobile #1 on a dumpster team.

If you were to design a Trade Deadline defensive rental in a lab it would be Luke Schenn.

Pretty much my thoughts as well.

I have a feeling he’s going to end his career in Vancouver, he has been just so good for us, I would be really upset if we got rid of him, unless we trade him at the deadline, and then sign him in free agency again.

He has completely turned his career around, playing the best hockey of his life at his age right now

I like him. I’ve been on record on HFOil about wanting to target Luke Schenn for months.

He’s someone I wouldn’t even hate a slight overpay on given the value he brings back at his cap hit.

Thinking a second round pick
Only if Vancouver doesn't let anyone know he's available. This is literally the guy every coach with playoff aspirations is begging their GM to find for them at the deadline. Ben Chiarot who has won nothing got a 1st and 4th.

I agree with this. I feel like he probably gets traded at the deadline assuming Vancouver is out, only to return to be Hughes' partner again next season

Yep. He's the type of high character guy to help raise the competitive level of some of the guys back there. If Barrie is on the move in a deal prior to the deadline, I think Schenn might be one of the better, more affordable bottom pair options out there.

what’s surprising about schenn.
He has been the best defenceman on Vancouver’s roster at getting his shot through this year

Every d-man on Vancouver could take his example.
Hughes had been getting worse at it
OEL sucks at it
Myers sucks at it

He just keeps things very very simple
His first pass is decent, and when he doesn’t have a play he just goes off the glass and out, which you want in a simplistic game in the playoffs.

Plus any guy that calls out JT Miller for his clown moves is good by me.

Great addition for any team at a cheap price
I’d say a 3rd

Barrie has been pretty good for the Oilers. He should not be playing 20+ min a night though so I think we should be adding to the d-line rather than 1 out 1 in. Players like Pulju, Yams and Foegele + draft pick hopefully can get it done with someone closer to TDL

We need a guy or two like him in the lineup down the stretch.

Games get tighter and more physical as we go, you need crease clearers and big, physical D men.

Not sure Barrie is getting moved, he’s actually played pretty well for us.

Yeah Schenn is not getting traded to a divisional rival, unless the asking price is too good.
I don't see Vancouver minding if it's closer to TDL with them still being bottom feeders. Especially if there's a handshake deal he'll just return as a UFA. Essentially he would be doing the Canucks a solid.

He’s a pure rental, if the Canucks are well out of playoff contention it wouldn’t really matter.

He could also re-sign with the Canucks again after the season.

Tyson Barrie will have to move if any substantial left shot defenseman is added unless the Oilers can convince a team to retain heavily and/or move multiple forwards to offset salary.

I have no interest in moving Barrie, but his cap hit is probably one of the more significant ones we can move at a positive value.

Moving multiple forwards leaves spots open on the forward unit that is currently icing all of Kostin, Benson, Malone and Shore.

I'm not sure the Canucks will even want to move Schenn. Unless the price is extremely high, i think he's probably just more valuable to the Canucks than he would be as a trade chip. He's really the only thing we have that can play a simple, physical, defensive game...and a RHD who meshes with Hughes on top of that. The stability he can bring to the Canucks defensive pairings and the example he sets is probably worth enough to them that it'd take a real "overpayment" to think about actually moving him.

Probably look to re-sign him for another couple years, the way he's turned his career around in Vancouver. And given the role he's carved out for himself there, i'd imagine he'd be happy to oblige as well.

Rental or not, Schenn wouldn’t be moved within the division. Also highly unlikely that we don’t try to re-sign our only bargain defenceman that pairs extremely well with Hughes

Schenn is a warrior. I'd say ideally a 3rd round pick based on the trade market for RHDs. Edmonton would be a nice landing spot for Schenn as he could prove valuable to them in a 3rd pairing role/7th D physical role. I would love it if he return to us in the offseason like how Braun did with Philadelphia.

Why worry about trading within the division? If Canucks are trading Schenn their season is already likely lost. If the Oilers offer the best deal then move him to Edmonton. I doubt management is worried about trading within the division... especially if Schenn is only a rental.

Contention or not, you rarely see trades within the division. You don’t purposefully make your rivals better. If Schenn performed well and gets re-signed by Edmonton that’s a big whoopsie

I wouldn't say you rarely see in-division trades... last year in the week leading up to the trade deadline we saw:
- COL traded Tyson Jost to MIN
- MTL traded Ben Chiarot to FLA
- SEA traded Calle Jarnkrok to CGY
- BUF traded Robert Hagg to FLA
- OTT traded Nick Paul to TBL
and some more.

All teams on different ends of the spectrum. Unless you’re going full scorched earth rebuild, you don’t trade 1/2 your top pairing and defensive anchor within the division. (And we all know the Canucks won’t do a proper rebuild).

Schenn is the kind of guy you keep in the locker room and not sell him off, especially if it’s only a 3rd
