All teams on different ends of the spectrum. Unless you’re going full scorched earth rebuild, you don’t trade 1/2 your top pairing and defensive anchor within the division. (And we all know the Canucks won’t do a proper rebuild).

Schenn is the kind of guy you keep in the locker room and not sell him off, especially if it’s only a 3rd
Well, if Canucks are trading Schenn... odds are they will be on "different ends of the spectrum" from the Oilers. I agree that Schenn is quite valuable to the Canucks. However, if Canucks choose to sell then Schenn is one of our very best trade asset to return positive value. I love Schenn but Canucks are not going to fix that D core overnight and Schenn very likely won't be on the D core long-term. It's good asset management.

Schenns value to the team is higher than a 3rd we’d potentially get. We need him here while Hughes continues to mature.

Edmonton would be much better off going after Stillman ;)

Only if Vancouver doesn't let anyone know he's available. This is literally the guy every coach with playoff aspirations is begging their GM to find for them at the deadline. Ben Chiarot who has won nothing got a 1st and 4th.
Seems that everyone with a shut down defenseman now thinks they are getting the Ben Chairot deal.

The uptick charge would be a first with an add from Vancouver like a 4th round pick. They can just trade him out East for a 2nd so why take an Edmonton 2nd?
It's a UFA situation. Highly unlikely that he re-signs with the team that you trade him to. Vancouver is only trading him if they aren't making the playoffs. I don't think it makes much sense to ask for that much of a premium, and I don't think there is a precedent for it. Just take the highest 2nd you can get if that's what the offers are. Try for a throw in prospect.

He was a part of those cup runs but let’s pump the breaks a bit. He was playing 10 minutes a night and spent half the playoffs in the press box. Montreal may not have won but Chiarot was playing 25 minutes a night in their run to the finals.

I think the Chiarot trade was an overpay but there’s a significant gap in the roles these guys play.

What is the highest pick though? The teams that want him are bound for the playoffs and regardless of seed it comes down to where they get knocked out. Can trade him to the 8th seed that wins the cup for all you know. If he’s moved in the division there is a premium, if he moves in the conference there is a tiny uptick, if he goes to the East I imagine it’s a second depending on a bidding war for a cost controlled asset that is built for the playoffs.

This is purely based off of Supply and demand and not just on Schenn’s abilities as a Hockey player. He’s going to go for a second or late first and I can see an add to the second. There will be a bidding war for his services as he allows you to add other pieces due to his contract.

He honestly deserves an A in Vancouver over guys like OEL. Just a beauty and I have respect for him the same way I did with Tanev when he was a Canuck.

I think most GM's would know which teams 2nd round pick they feel will be highest. We didn't see "in division" premiums with a lot of deadline deals last year, I think you are blowing that out of proportion, big time. If this was a guy with 3 or 4 years left on his deal, yes, you want him in the other conference if you think he is going to hurt your team. For a rental, you just take what you feel the best offer is. Maybe pick a team ranked a few spots later if you really want to put the screws to a division rival, but it isn't standard for teams to trade extra for rentals like you are suggesting.

As per supply and demand, I would be shocked if more than 3 1st round picks are traded this year. This is an incredibly deep 1st round. I'm sure there will be plenty of teams interested, but again, this is Luke Schenn, not Cale Makar. Just because a lot of teams might want the guy for a 2nd round pick doesn't mean any are going to bid a 1st.

This is just a case of my dad can beat up your dad. A fan base that is upset it can’t have pieces without giving up anything of significance. You either join the bidding war or stay out and that is a teams prerogative.

Luke Schenn isn’t Makar and he also doesn’t make $9.5 million like him as well. He is a guy that is a RHS defensive defender who chips in offensively that can plug into your top 4 who leads the league in hits and has Cup experience while making league minimum.

In other words everyone can use him and everyone can afford him, hence the bidding war.

Schenn is a warrior. I'd say ideally a 3rd round pick based on the trade market for RHDs. Edmonton would be a nice landing spot for Schenn as he could prove valuable to them in a 3rd pairing role/7th D physical role. I would love it if he return to us in the offseason like how Braun did with Philadelphia.

Why worry about trading within the division? If Canucks are trading Schenn their season is already likely lost. If the Oilers offer the best deal then move him to Edmonton. I doubt management is worried about trading within the division... especially if Schenn is only a rental.

I think a 3rd is a fair ask.

If the market gets crazy around the deadline and he is traded he will likely fetch a 2nd though I think.

If you’re giving anything more than a late 2nd for Luke Schenn then you clearly lost the trade… unless your team is playing in the SC Finals.

He’s a decent shut down guy who should be playing no higher than a 2nd pairing ever.

Might he return more? The proof is in the pudding… a lot of genius and desperate GMs out there. Might even be our GM who does it… he fits the bill in the genius and desperate category… In mean he did pay two 2nds for a pending RFA that he knew very well and then let him walk for nothing, not even extending a QO.

How some of these GMs and smart hockey guys have jobs and keep getting re-hired, I’ll never know. I am confident there are more intelligent and knowledgeable posters on this site than some of those clowns…. a few.

Schenn is the type of player who is in high demand at the deadline. With his salary, any of the contenders can afford him. I think he will get a 2024 2nd in return.

That's not it at all. It's a case of a fanbase thinking every good piece they have is worth a mountain of gold. It's also a case where you don't recognize that a bidding war doesn't mean GM's will pay double or triple value for a guy. First round picks this year are worth a premium. Next years first? Yeah, that might be more likely, but I am pretty sure this year's first is not going to happen for Schenn.

Regardless, the only reason I really replied is your assertion that a division rival would have to pay a premium, and I'm pretty sure that Vancouver's management wouldn't do that in the likely scenario that they are missing the playoffs and don't expect to extend Schenn. They'll take what they feel is the best offer, regardless of where it comes from.

Also, I just wanted to say that I love your username. The one thing about Bure's game that I hated was watching him do those flying "checks", ha ha. What a great player he was.

Don’t think anyone should be surprised if he collects a 2nd rounder. He has a role to play and he plays it well. More likely a 3rd but he’s also a perfect fit in Vancouver.

If they want to keep him, sign him to a 2 year deal and be done with it. Same goes for Maatta in Detroit. These two guys have pretty specific roles they play very well in their current situations.

We have to give Hronek a lot of credit but nobody should underestimate what having Maatta on his left side is allowing him to do.

There’s a few of these guys out there and if you have something working for cheap, keep it going if you can. Luke works in Vancouver.

I feel like if the leafs did nothing but add Schenn I’d be happy. I feel like he’s be a good partner for Sandin.

I mean. Savard got a first a year before. Manson got the equivalent of a 1st.

It’s not uncommon for this type of rental to secure a really solid return.

A deal around Edmonton's 2023 2nd + a prospect like Lavoie… or Savoie if Edmonton is a little more desperate.

This is a case of because Myers and OEL are bad that makes Schenn good?

Schenn gets traded for a 5th, Oilers can jump the line with a 4th.

Don't forget that the Oilers paid a 2nd for kulak.. then extended for 4 years.

Anyone in the division will have to pay a higher value especially for a physical player like Schenn, i dont think the oilers are a good fit unless they want to pay a high price.

Canuck fans saying id rather keep Schenn than trade him for a 3rd is exactly whats wrong with the franchise. They are incompetent of seeing the big picture.

I love Schenn. He is an Alpha, old school, rock em sock em, stay at home Dman.

but his value is at all time highest, Canucks gotta trade him.

Canuck fans gotta ask themselves....is Schenn going to be a productive part of the core in 3 yrs or so when they can be a legit competitive team?? answer is no... not with Schenn's skating and how hard he plays the game.

Move him now.

I agree a 3rd would suck, value wise but if thats the best offer you take it.

However i think Schenn is exactly the type of player that every cup contender would want to add...

Dman, Right shot, durable, tough as nails, Stanley cup champion.

He should fetch a 2nd and even possibly a 1st or a conditional that the 2nd becomes a 1st.

Whoever gets him wont be disappointed though, even if they pony up a 1st round pick. Schenn is the real deal and a warrior you want on your team in a 7 game series.
