He was puking on the bench so I’d say he was less than 100% lolHe wasn’t good last night, possibly playing sick, and that amplified some of his warts.
His defensive shortcomings are really overblown though

He has 4 days to relax. I’m sure Jack has chicken noodle soup and some Gato on deck to help him get through it!Kind of rough luck that he's sick and may not be 100% for a few days. Hopefully he will be ready by Tuesday or Thursday and can get into a couple games before the season ends.
He struggles to defend in college let alone the AHL. If Jack wasn’t his brother, we would be completely fine letting him develop in a top pairing role in Utica. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
He’s pregnant?!?!
I doubt they'd throw im straight into the lineup against Boston on Saturday anyway. He should get a couple skates in with the team before maybe getting into the Buffalo or Washington game.Kind of rough luck that he's sick and may not be 100% for a few days. Who could've seen this coming
If his timeline is anything like mine has been from the 3rd stomach bug in 3 months my daughter has given me, he’ll be right as rain 3 days post-puke (disclaimer, I am not a 20 year old top tier athlete, but merely a 33 year old dad who is in good lifting shape).I do NOT want him to give our team whatever he has that was making him puke on the bench.
Put him in quarantine for a few days.
I realize he was sick yesterday, hopefully legit sick and not conditioning. I've said it before though, I do not want him in a game this year. He just doesn't look ready and I fear playing him in a game vs either Buf or Wsh could severely stunt his development or really expose just how not ready he is. I'd trust if they did play him the staff would find him some soft minutes but don't really see the point of it.
Am fine w/ him skating and practicing w/ the team and maybe as injury insurance in the playoffs.
Agree, stunting development may have been a stretch on my part. Just watching him against college other college kids and at the WJC he just didn't pass they eye test. Did nothing to really stand out save a few nice plays in the O zone.Playing him in one or a handful of games could stunt his development? That's a stretch.
If we're planning to be leaning on him to play 25 minutes a night in the playoffs, that would be one thing. I would agree that is probably unwise to expect him to excel in that spot. But getting him a cup of coffee at the end of the season isn't a problem.
If it exposes that his defensive game isn't ready, so be it. We work on that in the offseason and get him ready for next season.

Well his other option is 6, which is taken. All this playing time talk is fine but the real question is if he’s keeping that awful #43 in NJ?

I’ve grown to really like 43
It's not the most aesthetic number in the world, but it's the recognized "Hughes number", so it works. Can't wait to see it in red and black.I’ve grown to really like 43
