He struggles to defend in college let alone the AHL. If Jack wasn’t his brother, we would be completely fine letting him develop in a top pairing role in Utica. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

I've posted it in here plenty of times. Top ~10 DMen picks that go the college route never, ever spend any time in the AHL past a few games here or there. It isnt a thing that happens. Its pointless to even discuss IMO as there is no history for it.

Kind of rough luck that he's sick and may not be 100% for a few days. Hopefully he will be ready by Tuesday or Thursday and can get into a couple games before the season ends.
I doubt they'd throw im straight into the lineup against Boston on Saturday anyway. He should get a couple skates in with the team before maybe getting into the Buffalo or Washington game.

Morning skate tomorrow, practice Monday, morning skate Tuesday, game Tuesday night. If he's actually sick then maybe hold off until Washington. If it was something he's over quickly then that outline is what I'd do.

I do NOT want him to give our team whatever he has that was making him puke on the bench.

Put him in quarantine for a few days.
If his timeline is anything like mine has been from the 3rd stomach bug in 3 months my daughter has given me, he’ll be right as rain 3 days post-puke (disclaimer, I am not a 20 year old top tier athlete, but merely a 33 year old dad who is in good lifting shape).

I realize he was sick yesterday, hopefully legit sick and not conditioning. I've said it before though, I do not want him in a game this year. He just doesn't look ready and I fear playing him in a game vs either Buf or Wsh could severely stunt his development or really expose just how not ready he is. I'd trust if they did play him the staff would find him some soft minutes but don't really see the point of it.

Am fine w/ him skating and practicing w/ the team and maybe as injury insurance in the playoffs.

Playing him in one or a handful of games could stunt his development? That's a stretch.

If we're planning to be leaning on him to play 25 minutes a night in the playoffs, that would be one thing. I would agree that is probably unwise to expect him to excel in that spot. But getting him a cup of coffee at the end of the season isn't a problem.

If it exposes that his defensive game isn't ready, so be it. We work on that in the offseason and get him ready for next season.

Agree, stunting development may have been a stretch on my part. Just watching him against college other college kids and at the WJC he just didn't pass they eye test. Did nothing to really stand out save a few nice plays in the O zone.

I really don't see how playing him in a few games to end the season impacts his development at all. Look at Jack, he was awful his first year and looks just fine now. Getting him some reps could even show him what it'll take at the NHL level so he has all off-season to prepare.
