Prospect Info: Luke Hughes - part III

He struggles to defend in college let alone the AHL. If Jack wasn’t his brother, we would be completely fine letting him develop in a top pairing role in Utica. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

There would just be no chance of a 4th overall pick coming out of college after 2 years going to the AHL. That's just not how things are done.

Hughes will be a better defender in the future than he will be next season. He’s also likely already a net positive player next season.

So you let him help the team while learning to defend NHL players. Otherwise he still has to learn how to defend NHL players when we you decide to bring him up anyway.

Bahl replacing Graves and Luke replacing Sevo makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe you’re not recouping that full value next season but I think they can do an adequate enough job.

Ya, the defense is definitely worse at the start of the year if the Devils do that but it’s a cap league so choices need to be made.

The defense may not be worse even as early as the start of next year’s playoffs and that’s what the Devils will focus on for the next bunch of years.

Nah he’s definitely ready to play. Power wasn’t good defensively either in Michigan. Quinn wasn’t either. Both of those guys stepped right in and were really good. Even if Luke’s weaker than them we have more than those teams did and can give Luke more favorable usage.
Power was substantially better defensively, not even close. Quinn I didn’t watch a ton of in college so I can’t speak to his game. Regardless, the Devils aren’t taking Bahl or Graves out of the lineup for Luke this year so the discussion is pointless unless someone gets injured.

If Bahl is actually able to adequately perform in a top 4 role then I think we could be set up nicely for the playoffs next year. Maybe you have to go Siegs-Marino as a shutdown pair with extreme usage and then Bahl-Dougie to shelter Bahl a bit in a top 4 role. Then Luke on the bottom pair. I’m not a fan of Nemec in to start next year unless he blows you away in camp. By the end of the year though with another AHL year under his belt I definitely think he could be ready. Now the idea of a 2 rookie pair with Luke-Nemec is definitely risky but if that top 4 actually does work and you can run Luke-Nemec as a really sheltered 3rd pair you’re in great shape.

I would consider it a bit if he wasn't throwing up all night.
If Hughes plays against Boston (which I don’t think he will), I would take it as a sign the Devils are seriously looking at him as a playoff option.

Playing him immediately against a great and hard team would mean the team wants as much game information as possible.

It’s possible he’s a playoff player even if he doesn’t play against Boston but I don’t see the need to play him that game unless playoffs are on the mind.

Sorry to break it to you... You don't shelter anyone pairing him up with Dougie.

Nothing against Dougie but he's not necessarily the most responsible d-man.

However, Bahl's game is very well suited to complement Dougie's game.

Luke is gonna play games this year.

As to Quinn, I only saw bits and pieces of him in college, but he was absolutely no better than Luke is defensively, and he’s several inches shorter.

He’s not gonna be great defensively out of the gate, but he’ll outplay Smith 100% guaranteed and we let that chucklef*** play tonight.

If you’re using Siegs-Marino as a shutdown pair and you have Dougie getting middling competition then yes you are sheltering Bahl with Dougie. Having Bahl play with quite literally one of the best playdrivers in the league against middling competition is sheltering Bahl a bit

That makes it sound like they aren’t looking for him to play this year, they just want him learning from the side
Yes but they also actively didn’t add depth to the blue line at the tdl because Luke is also coming.

I don’t see him playing much in the playoffs unless an injury or a shake up situation

He wasn’t good last night, possibly playing sick, and that amplified some of his warts.

His defensive shortcomings are really overblown though
