The game come playoff time will ramp up big time. Luke would be getting like 10 minutes of ice time a game. Ruff is trying to win games, it's not about doing the kid a favor and getting him in the lineup right away. How much is he really going to impact the game when he is playing on the 3rd pairing with Smith or Severson ? Would rather have Bahl or Ohotyuk in the 6th/7th d man slot. Luke could easily go to the AHL and get top 4 minutes and not have to play under alot of pressure there. The kid will just be turning 20 next season. The possibility of losing Graves and Severson opens up 2 spots on the blue line. I'm sure 1 if not both Luke and Nemec will be filling them.

Luke will burn the first year of the ELC even if he doesn't play, unless the team signed him to an AHL ATO with an ELC that starts in 2023-24. But I don't think the team would mess around with that and would rather have Luke available as a black ace for the playoffs just in case.
I take offense to the black ace designation. It’s too insensitive…I prefer our Jewish King instead lol

I don't know why people are expecting Luke to not end up being that good and not able to impact games. If he doesn't end up being good then fine but all the guys who profile like him immediately step into the NHL as good players. Luke even on the 3rd pair (I don't know why you're expecting 10 minutes when it'd probably be like at minimum 15) next to Severson would be absolutely insane. Good luck against a team that has a top 4 of Siegs, Dougie, Marino, Graves and then a bottom pair of Luke Hughes and Damon Severson. Good f***ing luck. If Luke is actually an NHL caliber player than 15 minutes a game in the lead up to the playoffs and in the playoffs is FAR better for him than top pair AHL minutes.

Luke is not Makar so I wouldn’t expect him to step in as good but Makar stepped immediately into the playoffs as a great player. You at least give Luke a look. Look at all the top Dmen who took the route Luke did and stepped in as impact players. If Luke can be that and you have a D core of 6 top 4 Dmen you’re going to be incredibly hard to stop.
I'm just going to assume you're saying Luke is better than Makar.

Even as a 1st year player, I’d imagine he’ll have moments where he shows that game breaking talent with an end to end rush. He’ll probably give some back too, most young dmen do…but his skating will play from day 1 at this level.

All true, but come playoffs, coaches tend to lean away from players who make mistakes. But maybe Luke is that good out of the gate to outweigh it. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Ruff also really seems to like Smith even with the penalties.

Come playoff time when coaches like to lean on their vets even more? Luke is going to need to over perform to get time (or we have to be on the verge if elimination where Ruff does a big shakeup)

This fanbase seems so worried about bringing on arguably the best prospect in the league aboard. It’s time for Luke.

Is he perfect? Nope, like every single 18-19 year old prospect. He has some work to do in the D-zone, but his skating and offensive abilities are 100% at NHL level right now. Kid can flat out skate and rush with the best of them.

There’ll be some growing pains but it’s time for him to take the next step. I see no problem with giving him his first shot with the team, whatever that ends up being.

If Lukes growing pains are so bad that it sinks the entire team then they don't deserve to make the playoffs.

I'm still very high on Luke and think he will be an All Star defensman 100%. I'm not sure between him and Nemec which of the 2 will be the better/more valuable player. I suppose that would be a good problem to have though. Severson in my mind wouldn't be a great D partner for Hughes but he would be better than Smith/Ohotyuk/Bahl as long as they are playing sheltered minutes. It's alot of pressure for a defenseman to step into the league and play a few meaningful regular season games and go right to the playoffs. I guarantee if he were to have a bad game he instantly comes out of the lineup for another player to jump in. I want to see the Devils play their veterans come playoff time and not just play Hughes because of how hyped up he is. The playoffs are a whole different animal. Late games in the regular season if we weren't a playoff team I would say play him 100% but those late games will be alot more important if we are in the hunt for a playoff spot. If he cracks the lineup and impresses than I wouldn't mind that at all. Just really want the team to make smart choices and hopefully make a run this year.

We have the best prospect in hockey, I sure hope he can join the team by the time he turns 25, obviously it will be in a sheltered 3rd pairing role and we’ll just have to live with all the terrible mistakes he’s sure to make.
Everyone wants Luke to play. No one wants him to jump into an NHL playoff lineup if he isn't ready to be a contributor. Sorry this seems to bug some of the posters on here...

It doesn't bug anyone. Like I posted yesterday, there is no recent history whatsoever of highly drafted college DMen playing any prolonged period of time in the AHL. It just does not happen.

By the time he shows up I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we already clinched or are on the verge of clinching
I'd imagine they would be. Plus like I've said before, I'm fine having him here but I don't think he NEEDS to be in the lineup regularly.

If he comes in like he should then he will NEED to be in the lineup regularly because it won't even be close between him and the guys beneath him. He should be better than just being "a guy" like Smith, Okhotyuk, Bahl are. Luke should be coming in as an impact player.

I think those guys while not anywhere near as good offensively and obviously not having the ceiling, they play defense better than Hughes does. I'm interested in seeing how he does for sure, skys the limit, Im just not in a rush.
