I think those guys while not anywhere near as good offensively and obviously not having the ceiling, they play defense better than Hughes does. I'm interested in seeing how he does for sure, skys the limit, Im just not in a rush.
Defense without a doubt has an experience element that is extremely important. Not even a question.

But I think Luke will come right in and never look back. Just my opinion.

On a side note:

Luke is 3 points away from brother Quinn's Michigan career point total right now.

Quinn 69 games - 10 goals - 52 assist - 62 points

Luke 63 games - 20 goals - 39 assist - 59 points.

Luke should have household bragging rights by the end of the month.

Noogies for Quinn.

Yeah, but who makes the wider turns?

I just don’t want to have Luke play with a partner that is not that experienced.
It would be very important to have a veteran player that can guide him in the ice while being paired with him , not just a guy / coach on the bench to talk to him after shifts.
Some Flames games this year and last year , they would show examples of how Tanev helps out his young D partners (Klyington , Hanifin etc) . He is always talking and pointing to the kids in where to switch , when and where to challenge puck carriers in the defensive zone etc etc etc. That would be huge in learning and cutting down on mistakes IMO.
I would not really want amt two rookies paired up , including Luke . I,don’t see how that’s possible if we add Luke Nemec and ome other rookie or kid to the roster if we let both Severosn and Graves walk.

I think we have a pretty solid base to get it done. We need to keep Graves I think

Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Luke - Marino
Graves - Nemec

I think something like this can work?

Michigan hasn’t looked all that great this year so I don’t think we’ll have to wait until April for Luke to join the team.

Definitely not as deep as last year's squad, but Michigan should comfortably make the bracket. If they don't make the Frozen Four, Luke could sign in late March instead of early April.

Still thinking April 6 (home against Columbus) and April 11 (home finale against Buffalo) would be the best time to insert him into the lineup and give somebody a night off.

I'm not sure how the NCAA brackets will play out since the season still has awhile to go but there will be games played at Bridgeport in March. Maybe there is a chance Michigan or a team with another one of our prospects will be playing a game there. Would be worth making the drive or train ride for most of you in the tri state area who would wanna see Luke live. I'm hoping Mixhigan gets put into the Regional bracket Bridgeport will host.

That looks good but what do we do eventually with Mukhamadoulin Bahl Okhotiuk Vilen Casey etc?
It would be perfect if we keep Graves for one or two years until those kids are ready but why would Graves sign a one or two year deal? I can’t see him doing that and it would be some dead cap having him at his $ for anything longer than 2 years.

Tanev did the same thing with the D in Vancouver. When he walked away to Calgary as a UFA the Canucks lost the heart and soul of their Defense. Benning gave the excuse he ran out of time to re-sign him. LOL!

The Canucks D has not been the same since and currently in one word, sucks.

I don't think we need to worry what we do with a surplus. Players will win spots or they won't.

If someone pushes open the door and we need to make room then we worry about it...the alternative is they age out in the AHL and then become FA's...if that happens who cares...they weren't good enough. Good players don't slip through the cracks all that often...

I'm not sure guys like Bahl and Okhotyuk have pushed open the door enough to lose sleep over what is going to happen next....they certainly aren't better or even on par to what we can ice when healthy. And I much rather pay Graves than handhold along two substandard Dmen... The others haven't made their case yet in Pro league or in a North American Pro league in Vilen's and Muk's case.

We are almost in a position where nobody is gifted a D spot or gets an opportunity just because it's "time". To me that is an ideal situation...players have to be better than what's in front of them or they fall by the wayside.

What you say here makes sense. I think you have to add the caveat that you can’t pay everyone and you do need a certain amount of cost controlled players in RFA years to make the cap work. NJ has some decisions to make in that regard. I’d like them to keep Graves and Sevs but it’s not likely since some team will pay them on relatively long term deals that NJ probably won’t match.
