Luke has more talent in his little pinkie than Zacha has in his whole body. Maybe a a bit of a hyperbole take but you get my drift.

I agree completely, just want to wait longer than their 18yo seasons and a small number of games tourney before declaring that we made another huge mistake drafting hughes.

Explain twitter scout.

I wasnt even talking about you although from your twitter profile thats probably hard for you to believe.

I am referring to certain posters who were against the Hughes pick from day 1 just like with Zacha.

You guys are in agreement about Hughes. The problem with Zacha was that he wasn't very good. Stats guys certainly do not get anything close to all of them right when it comes to high draft picks, but that's one they nailed - Zacha is about exactly the player he'd be expected to be.

I was confused as well because I thought we were in agreement about Hughes and then came the ridiculous attack about what level of fan I am lol.

My Zacha point all along has been that he wasnt much of a reach, if a reach at all, considering where the predraft rankings had him. In retrospect his nhl career mirrors the lack of production in junior so this is one the stat people were right on as you said.

Anyone trashing the Hughes pick at this point is just trying to reconfirm their priors.

No one

We could be arguing about Brandt Clarke’s stellar defense instead I guess since that was the guy a number of people wanted instead of Luke.

Clarke doesn’t get mentioned at all because he isn’t being praised right now. I’m actually not particularly down on him as a player, I just enjoy how certain prospects get attention (like Jirecek), while others cease to exist, depending on how it’s going for them right that second. It’s always front-running mania.

With his physical tools, I would expect entry prevention to be something he becomes good at in the future.
Agreed, this is one where high level coaching will help him. Strength on the puck should aid him below the hashmarks on retrieval and ending plays. His decision making with the puck has improved dramatically. It isn't a weakness.

What are the chances that Luke plays for NJD this season? An early exit for Michigan in the tournament probably guarantees him a couple of NHL games, but what happens if Michigan makes it to the final? That would leave just the last two games for Luke to have his cup of coffee this season.

tbh, I would be stunned if he isnt signed the literal day after Michigan is eliminated.

But could be April 8th which would only leave 2 regular season games. Is it even worth it to rush him up at that point?
Yes. Sign him, give him his 2 games as soon as possible once the season is over. 2-3 games is most likely how many he’d play this season anyways. Time to get the ball rolling with Luke at the pro level. It’s time for him.

I would say barring injury it’s about 99%+ likely Hughes plays at least 1 game this season.

All depends on where we are in the standings, what's on the line those two games and where the defense is health-wise (and post trade deadline).

A bit too early now to speculate. Might not be the worse thing though to get him a couple of games in the regular season in case he's needed as added depth for a playoff run.

Many teams like to add veteran depth on defense ahead of the playoffs, even if it's a small move like Kulikov. Wonder if Fitz will approach differently knowing we have Hughes, Nemec and Mukhamadullin available if needed. I know Makar is a different level, but he made his NHL debut in the playoffs and played 10 games in the 2019 playoffs.

Hughes wants to burn that first contract year so he’s closer to his second contract.

Usually that’s a benefit top college players expect the NHL team to give them.

The NHL team also sometimes benefits by signing a better value second contract than they otherwise may have.

Playing 2 games would burn a year? I thought you had to play 9. Is this a special rule coming out of college?

Someone from the Devils front office came onto a broadcast a few weeks ago and stated that they will sign him as soon as they can.

It was kind of a funny moment because Laughlin basically invited him to play footsie on the question with a “I know you can’t say too much…” setup, but the guy just came out directly and said it.

I’ll go a step further and guess that they’ll get him into the lineup pretty quickly after signing him.
