Don’t need fancy stats to see his defensive game has improved drastically. As others have said , it seems like something “ clicked” for him recently. It’s like a switch flipped. He looks very confident and under control and doesn’t seem to ever panic. A forward will have a stride or two on him and be driving wide , and he will just use his skating and stick work to neutralize the threat. He is now starting to be dominant in the O zone lately. He is taking more chances and driving the net and dangling more now. He occasionally dangles into traffic but he will adjust and be a pain in the ass for defenders to handle .
There have been numerous times the last half dozen games where he has made very skilled stick checks / perfect body positioning and routes with perfect gaps to defend and using timing perfectly to neutralize attacks and retrieve pucks . He has looked very poised and is improving each game . It will be very interesting to see how much he can grow his game . I don’t think he will be as elite offensively as Quinn , but then again Quinn is probably the best in the world at that so there’s no shame in not being better

This is every NJD dman QoC since he came back. There is 0 sheltering going on. He is playing the most minutes, and they aren't meaningfully different from the other pairings.

The other two pairings have boosted full year numbers because Nemec and Casey as a pairing were playing very sheltered minutes, meaning they had to pick up the slack early.

Casey and Nemec were getting sheltered to start the year. Other pairings (specifically siegs and kovy) picked up the slack then boosting their full year numbers.

why do you have to remind me that kurtis macdermid is on our roster?

NJ
does he have the potential to steal PP1 away from Hamilton

The PP this year has been by far the best in the league so I doubt it's coming any time soon. Luke was PP1 at the start of last year when they looked really good. Personally if Kovaecvic were to keep up his strong play all year I'd be looking to move on from Dougie this summer. Re-sign Kovacevic, insert Casey into the linup, and use Dougie's money elsewhere.

Not really.

Hamilton is an elite PP1 weapon with his shot, and luke's skating allows him to carry a PP2 in a way hamilton cannot, especially with Jack and Bratt already being elite entry guys for PP1 making him less valuable there.

Works out better with Luke on PP2 and Dougie on PP1.

Next contract is gonna be interesting. He’s not putting up the offensive numbers he did last year but he’s been much better overall. Anything under 8x8 would be a steal

The offense should still come.

Idk what your league settings are in terms of how much hits and blocks are worth (because that's not how he defends, which is with his skating and stickwork), but the points should come more.

NJD is still shooting something like 5% with luke on the ice so far. That'll go up

And ofc if dougie got hurt he'd be PP1 QB again

I think he's gonna get bridged. I can't see him agreeing to a deal like that and NJ also wants to win a cup the next 3 years so they will place a premium on cap space in 2024-2027.

I don't think he's going to agree to anything that NJ is willing to offer long term. Maybe if he suffers a serious injury like his brother did and suddenly gets nervous about missing out on millions of dollars.
Offer him 8 mill or 8.5 mill lmao. Why bridge him? So you can overpay some 30 year old winger we don't need?

He's being given the opportunity to spend a decade playing with his brother.

Bridge makes the most sense with NJ cap hit.
They have about 17 million in cap space, to sign 9 guys. If he takes half of that, that leaves say 9 million for 8 guys. (2 of them in press box). So about 7 million for 6 players on ice. So not impossible.

NJ will try desperately to sign him to a max term deal. A bridge deal would be a massive win for Luke’s agent.

Every single position needed to fill in NJD is depth. There is nothing you need to buy at a high price

Top 9 filled with Jack Noesen Cotter Haula Nico Bratt Gritysuk Meier Mercer Palat (that's 10 guys)
Goalie filled with markstrom.
Top 6 D filled with Luke Nemec Pesce Hamilton Siegs Dillon.

So you're looking at a 4C, backup goalie, 4th line winger, 1 scratch forward and 1 scratch dman.

4 mill in space to fill 3 spots. If you want to go pricier on an acquisition you dump palat. Simple

2 mill 4C type, 1 mill scratch, 1 mill 4 RW. You dump palat if need be.

Bridge deal almost never makes sense for stars. Lock his ass up for 8 years. Find a way to ship out Dougie and Palat to create space
