Luke Hughes has taken a massive step forward

I hope we extend him max term sooner than later. He is getting better and better game to game. It’s awesome watching it happen in real time in front of our eyes. It’s noticeable progression and yuu can tell that it’s just a matter of time before he figures out how to disect defences more efficiently. He has the ability to do so. It’s just a matter of figuring out how to best use that ability. He needs to realize also that he draws defenders to him and frees up teammates and needs to utilize his teammates more often . For now it looks like he wants to score a goal to get that monkey off his back . He reminds me of Jack just before he “ figured it out “ . Luke looks like he is gaining confidence and can see that he can make plays , and just needs to tweak and fine tune some things to start to dominate games. Needs to learn to zig sometimes instead of zag lol

Got flat-footed on the first goal but a nice rebound on his score. Net positive. Dude is legit defensively.

He’ll want more than both of his brothers but obviously they’re both underpaid and it works to NJs advantage that all of their top guys signed bargain deals apart from Meier. I think 9-9.5 will do it but he may only want 6 years term.

Sanderson's probably the best comp and he signed for 9.15% of the cap for 8 years. If the cap is jumping to that 95-97 range then either just above or below 9 mil for 8 years makes sense.

He’s doing a pretty good job as a bottom pair D and if all goes well and he keeps his progression, he should eventually turn into a top 4 D in this league. Great potential.
Averaging 17 5 on 5 minutes per game, the same as Pesce and Siegenthaler. Hamilton and Dillon both under 16. Kovy 16:25. Over the last 10 games, he’s the only defender averaging over 17 a game 5 on 5.

Bottom pairing? News to Devils fans.

The eye test along with the data is spot on. He looks amazing but he is paired on the 3rd line which I think it just really making him pop. He still has growth left in him . This is just the beginning.

That’s because he’s not good enough defensively for the PK and not good enough to take over Hamilton’s role on the PP. he has to get minutes somewhere

Then why isn’t he getting these minutes already? I’m not saying he’s never going to get there, just that he isn’t right now.

Nothing wrong with saying that.
You got four solid vets on defense (Pesce, Dillion, Kovacevic and Siegs) that are good on the PK and he's on the #2 PP on a team that has the best PP in the league, why on earth would you want to break up what is working?

It does sound like you're purposely trying to sell him short from the get go when you suggested his potential is a Top 4 defenseman, his potential is not just being a Top 2 on a team but #1 overall. He's going to be that good.

So basically, there are 4 better D on NJ right now hence why he’s not getting PP1 time and no PK time, justifying the fact that he’s getting more 5v5 minutes than other ones.

Exactly the opposite of what I was saying, right? RIGHT?

About the bolded: He’s not right now so let’s wait before calling him a top 4, top 2 or #1 D. We’ll call him that when (and if) he gets there.

On the PK, yes there are 4 better defensemen, but you said overall so you're moving the goal posts now. Overall the way he's been playing he's absolutely already a Top 4 defenseman.

And you can wait, I don't need to.

PS - are you a Habs fan?
