If Dostal turns out to be the real deal, my only concern is keeping him.

I doubt Dostal wants to go the Gibson route where he faces 40 shots a game in a losing effort.

We still have time to shore things up, but the Ducks have to spend more time in the O zone and protect Lukas a lot more on defense. Just clearing the puck would go a long way.

95% save percentage. 2gaa. Average 40sog 38 saves per night. Record 22 - 30
Can you win a vezina with a losing record?
That sums my concern for ducks season. No way dostal holds these numbers if we cant win him some and give him some 25 sog nights
I don’t think any goalie has won the Vezina with a personal losing record, but goalies of some pretty mediocre teams have won it. Beezer was one, Jose Theodore. A number of Hasek’s teams were just ok. I’m sure there are more.

His numbers aren’t sustainable, and at some point fatigue will set in with the workload he gets every game. If they could keep it to even 30 shots per game instead of 40+, that would be a big improvement.

Hopefully Gibson can give him the odd night off when he gets back, as I don’t see Gibby taking the starters net back anytime soon.

Looks like the worst records for Vezina winners were

Theodore (2001/02)
30-24-10

Hasek (1994/95)
19-14-7

Hasek (1998/99)
30-18-14

Then you have a whole bunch that were slightly better than that. A lot of years where the winner had around twice as many wins as losses/ties/OTL, definitely more common than being anywhere near .500

does it look likely that he is not ready to take the reins from Gibson this year? how likely will it be a tandem going forward, or its pretty much a forgone conclusion that Gibson will be traded/dangled?

No one is ready to take the net full time for the Ducks. Any goalie behind this defense is going to get worn out, there are just too many lapses and the other team possess the puck in the zone too much. Dostal is the better goalie now, but it'll likely be a tandem so that Dostal isn't ruined. Gibson will be available, but Ducks probably won't pay to get rid of him (no cap issues) and I'm not sure a team will pay enough for them to retain for 2.5 years. Best case for Dostal's development will be to split the net with Gibson until the team is better (or at least the defense is better). What ruined Gibson was the complete breakdown in front of him, his team giving up 40 shots per night and struggling to score goals at the other end.

Hiller was astounding during his time here. The slander around him at times here over the years was always annoying
Agreed. A legitimate top tier goaltender for a number of seasons, his 2010-11 season was one of the best I can remember from a Ducks goaltender especially given the defence ahead of him was basically Lubo/Lydman along with a rookie Fowler and a revolving door of Lilja, Mara and Sutton until Beauch arrived late in the season. f***ing Paul Mara playing 20 minutes a game.....what a time.

Not to mention the 2009 playoffs too was an all timer effort.

It's a shame that the vertigo just seemed to take an edge off his performance, was never quite the same afterwards.

Wonder how they will sign him. Obviously the team can not afford him and Gibby on big contracts.

Why can't they? They have tons of cap room and the cap is going up. They can absolutely afford him and Gibson for a couple seasons.

such a random question but would you trade sam bennett for dostal in a fantasy dynasty keeper league? lol. pondering this offer I just got. it’s a points league that counts hits/blocks.

I would probably rather have sam Bennett but if you’re trying to make the long term play then it could maybe pay off in a few seasons

Some good stuff about Dostal here from Jesse Granger at The Athletic: Goalie Tracking: The top storylines in NHL nets, including the rise of 2 future standouts

Back to Dostál, who is doing something we rarely see: Producing elite statistics despite playing behind the worst defense in hockey. His 26.67 goals saved above expected ranks second in the NHL behind Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck, according to Evolving-Hockey. That metric accounts for the quality of shots faced, which makes it more indicative of goalie performance than save percentage, but it’s still incredibly difficult to maintain high GSAx playing behind a very poor defense.
