When you consider that the cap is going to be going up rather significantly (so say the pundits) this becomes much less of an issue...

And Alzner, a Gunnar/Franson peer signed for 4/11.2m -2.8m per, so thing may not be quite as dire as some think.

Leafs get an extra 2.5 coming off the books from buyouts/cap retention. That in addition to any cap increases will prevent any cap controversy.

Not to mention Cap geek includes minor leaguers in the cap count, its actually 12.25 mill for 5 players (roughly 2.5 each roster spot)

Gunnar outpointed him 3-1 as a top pairing D and Franson was top eight in league scoring last year

If Gunnarsson's arbitration commands more than $3 million and Franson wants $4m+, we're gonna have to let one of them walk or try to trade their rights unless we can gain more cap space.

Another factor is that we still need to get Kadri signed to a new deal too.

And Franson outscored Dion. Dion got 6.5 as a RFA, so 6.75 for Cody? And Gunnar outscored Karlsson and Karlsson got 6.5 too, 6.75 for Gunnar also? Facetious obviously. Just saying there's more to a defenseman, even an arbitrator's evaluation of one, than their point totals.

Good thing they aren't forwards then. If he's not reasonable, he won't be playing here. I'm pretty sure that would be the case even if the Leafs had 20 million in cap space.

how come you guys have ridiculous tags for gunnarson and franson? Why in the world would a 3rd line Dman get 3 million? He didnt prove he was worth 3 mil. When did Gunnarson show 4 mil value? Theyre gonna be in the 2 mil range and maybe Gunnarson hits 3. 0% chance youre paying a 5th-6th dman like Franson 3 mil, thats bad business

And PK Subban won the Norris with a 2.9 cap hit.

Comparisons can work both ways.

You have to think Franson gets more than Gunnerson

And when the team goes on the road trip and injuries or illness occur and Leafs play with less than the required players (20) for a game.

A team salary cap is based on 20 players and a few spares. You really go with the bare minimum only in a pinch buts its not the desirable\preferable situation.

I wouldn't suggest getting Leafs 5 RFAs signed and going to the full salary ceiling and having only 20 players on the roster is a good idea, or one the Leafs intend to go with.

Is that the league rule now? I'm trying to remember what the NHL changed, if anything, about that rule since the Flames made a mockery of it.

Nobody is going anywhere except maybe Liles and Reimer after this season when Leaf Nation starts to love Bernier.
Kadri probably gets 3m for 2 years. Gunnarsson around 2.5, Franson around 3, Fraser around 1.25m. Wouldn't be surprised to see Colbourne taking another 1-2 year 2 way deal.

Edit: According to CapGeek Colbourne signed a 1 year 600k contract. Make or break season for him.
