I thought this was pretty cool. The '67 expansion draft team sheets. Probably used by one of the clubs at the time to keep track of the draft as it transpired.

Hey kovacro, where did you see those sheets? In an auction or something? Would love to acquire one of those for my memorabilia collection.

Another nice photo from back in the day. Jack Kent Cooke.

Sorry Ron, I hijacked your thread a bit. Just thought these photos were cool.

No worries, the more the better. I love the historical stuff.

Some stories from the Kings inaugural season:
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/27/sports/la-sp-kings-history-20120527

Cooke was smart, manipulative and demanding.

McDonald said when Cooke went east to arrange financing for the Forum, “The bank president arranged a dinner. Jack asked what was being served and then told him, ‘I’m not going to enjoy that.’ They stopped the limo at a store and he bought a package of wieners. Jack loved hot dogs.â€

Cooke, a Canadian who bought the Lakers in 1965, won the NHL franchise by outbidding the Coliseum Commission. That left scars, and when Cooke grew frustrated wrangling over use of the Sports Arena, he decided to build the Forum.

Only, “You didn’t call it the Forum, you called it the ‘Fabulous Forum,’†former Kings forward Doug Robinson said. “The team colors weren’t purple and yellow, they were ‘Forum Blue’ and ‘Forum Gold.’â€

Cooke, a former encyclopedia salesman who died in 1997 at age 84, believed in such branding. Every player had to have a nickname.

“He felt it had more recall value,†McDonald said.

Cowboy Flett, Chief Campbell, Frenchy Lemieux, those stuck. Eddie Joyal became Eddie “The Jet†Joyal, and Cooke took that even further. He insisted that Joyal have little jets on his skates during warmups.

Here's the first team photo, I guess predating the opening of the Fabulous Forum:

And finally a year later they get to take their team photo on Forum ice:

Awesome stuff! I've changed the title to something more appropriate.

He needed the radio because Kings home games were not shown on Prime Ticket for another 17 years (1984 as I recollect).

yea i remember that, hell when i moved here in 73 from nyc, i was really surprised the rangers were on cable for years by then and had a road contract for away games also, but it turned out ok because i ended up going to alot more games at the forum and got hooked on the kings because of that, still nothing better than walking into the building during the playoffs you could feel the electricity in the air

Love this thread! Here are some great quotes after Kings fans literally threw garbage at Terry Sawchuk because of his performance in the 1968 playoffs.

I've picked up a few LA Times articles to supplement my work. I wish they were cheaper!

Awesome article, thanks for posting.

Poor Terry Sawchuck. He was already well past his prime when the Kings selected him in the expansion draft.

I was amazed to read about such poor fan behavior.

Then again, I was at the game where we littered the ice in the ANA game. So embarrassing.

great stuff. crazy to read that article and see that people were paying $7 for a seat. although not too many years ago, 300 level tix at the stapler weren't much more than that (at least on Stub Hub).

I remember watching the Kings 25th anniversary video from the 91-92 season having tons of info on the history of the team. Apparently it was Cooke's idea to attach some type of nickname with his players, and that's how they wound up with Eddie "The Jet" Joyal, Bill "Cowboy" Flett, and Juha "Whitey" Widing.

This was all well before my time since I was born in the 80s but I can't get enough info on Kings history.

"Cowboy" Bill Flett really was a cowboy, Participated in rodeo's and wore cowboy boots all the time.

If my memory serves me correct, that's Joyel 2nd row down from top, left one in uni....2nd men to right of him I think is Flett before he grew the beard.

Might as well add this here, it's been posted before, but it's a good idea to make this part of this thread for reference purposes.

This was the 9th game in their existence, and the earliest known televised game. (There could have been one earlier, but there doesn't seem to be any record of one.)

Expansion documentary; I'm sure most of you have seen this already but it would be good to get it referenced here.
