I guess Jack Kent Cooke was not a patient man... :shakehead

Other than pushing the NHL for an expansion team in Los Angeles, you are right. His whole goal was to field a team of "names" right away so that the "knowledgeable" fans in Los Angeles (i.e., transplanted Canadians) would get behind the team faster.

But the reality of the situation was that those Canadian fans were already loyal to their roots. Cooke should have appealed to the new hockey fans in the city, and built the team from youth. From this standpoint, he was a moron, and history tells us that it was a horrid decision.

The trades YP showed above just make me cringe and live the nightmare all over again. Thanks for nothing, YP. You just made my Monday.

Always liked this SI cover.

I meant kovarco

Yeah, believe it or not, I BOUGHT that one when it first came out...in 1975. ****, I'm old man.

Would be pretty cool if you still had it after all these years.

Btw, I feel sorry for anyone who lived through subpar Kings teams and the disco era, what an awful combination.

Some of my favorites:

Oct 9/78: LA acquiring Boston goalie Ron Grahame for their 1979 1st round pick which turned out to be Ray Bourque was awesome.

March 10/80: LA acquires Jerry Korab (Buf) for their 1982 1st round pick (Phil Housley)

Oct 18/83: LA acquires Brian Engblom and Ken Houston from Washington for Larry Murphy.

They also mortgaged a handful of 1st's in the early-mid 70's for players past their prime.

Unfortunately, they did this from the very beginning:

May 20/68: LA acquires Skip Krake (Bos) for their 1970 1st round pick (Reggie Leach)

Hey - don't drag down disco with ****** Kings' teams.

Disco was, and still is, pretty awesome.

And re the Kings/mont SI cover, I got this in '75 when I subscribed to SI, but it got lost years ago. But I just picked it up at Frank & Sons for $3 or $4 a few months ago.

I have no idea what happened to it. I think I tossed all my SI magazines at some point in the late 1970s... :(

Or, given the circumstances, probably tossed it after that devastating first round loss to Toronto that season. That would be like me.

Hated it contemporaneously, but love to listen to some of it now. Some of it is amazing...this one is one of my favorites:

^ That's the first time I've seen Dave Taylor stuttering. I know I had read that he stuttered a lot but I think by the time I started watching the Kings (late 80's) and when he was GM of the Kings, I think he'd gotten rid of it to a degree. Or maybe I just never noticed?

On another note, I didn't realize that Nick Nickson was getting the Foster Hewitt this year. Congrats to him! The Kings have a shoo-in (had to google the spelling) for PBP once Bob retires.

Great finds, Ron!

Of course, I already posted it, but I'm going to leave this here for posterity. Belongs here, I think :)

A Hockey Card History of the LA Kings

Here are a couple outtakes from my piece. First, Brian Kilrea on a 20-year-old Jim Fox:

"I wish he were my son. He never caused me one bit of trouble, never argued. He's just a kid with a happy face." (Edes, Gordon. "The Kings Have Three of a Kind." Los Angeles Times, October 7, 1980.)

And this hilarious anecdote from Vachon's retirement ceremony:

Megaphones were given to the fans at the Forum Thursday night so they could cheer Kings General Manager Rogie Vachon, who had his jersey retired before the Kings played the Boston Bruins.

But the fans used them to boo the Kings off the ice after they blew a 3-1 lead and were tied, 3-3. (LA Times)

Welcome! :)

Interesting find here, the opening to the 1982 playoffs (which resulted in that record-setting 10-8 win that resulted in the post-game show above).

These were just posted (by two different posters) in June 2015, so its no wonder I didn't see these before...

that was the series that did me in for the next 4 decades, lol,we had done pretty well that year the building was electric and upon walking in and hearing kings fans chanting during warmups in got in my blood and then came the triple crown years great times........spent most of my money on kings hockey ,rock concerts and the sweet **** then wasted the rest
