Dude is hilarious. Wants to run the team on a budget that leaves him JUST short of the luxury tax with 2 or 3 big names to appease casuals, but has to go dumpster diving for vet minimums and lotto ticket spring training invites every offseason because the cheap young talent doesn’t exist with the worst development system in the entire sport

Why pay for a development system. Not paying is a good way to save a few more dollars.

I just don't know if I can even watch the games for free this year. I stopped paying to go to games a few years ago.

Arte is smiling at his profits. He signed a $3 billion, 20 year contract in 2011. It's possible that he wants all that money and won't relinquish his ownership until the contract ends?

Right now, the team is about $50 mil below the luxury tax, according to Sportrac.

Hell, the reason we're stuck with Ray Montgomery as the bench coach right now is because Arte wouldn't pony up a couple hundred thousand bucks to get Clint Hurdle in the building (who was Washington's preference)

I fully believe Arte closed the wallet at some random date during the offseason. Absolutely zero chance management was told they only had $30 million or so to spend, and blew it all on middle relievers and a set up guy.

Ultimately this comes back to Moreno not being willing to pay a good GM or give that GM the resources they need to remake the entire organization into one that can draft, develop, and acquire quality players. I have no hope that this team will ever be good while Moreno owns them. The best possible result is that they get so lucky one year that they sneak into the playoffs as a wild card in a down year league-wide. That's the best possible scenario and it will probably end in them losing two straight games on the road. We won't even get a playoff game in Anaheim.

Yup. Arte tightened his purse string, which is why he denied accepting the contract Ohtani presented to him to match the Dodgers' offer. Should have traded Ohtani at the TDL so that your GM can properly build a team!!! But no, we got nothing for Ohtani and you knew you weren't going to keep him! >> insert all expletives <<<

Arte isn't the only GM tightening their purse string, the Mariners' owner has done it for the past two off-seasons. Only good thing is the Mariners' owner doesn't get involved in baseball operations. That lets Dipoto do wheeling and dealing a billion times each season to fit into the tight budget.

Minisian can only do so much when his predecessor, Eppler, only drafted one pitcher in the first round in the five drafts he did. During that time, Dipoto drafted quite a few pitchers in the 1st round in Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Emerson Hancock. The Angels could have had Kirby, but Eppler decided on picking SS Will Wilson five picks earlier!!!

Also, Moreno doesn't sign top end pitchers after Wilson. Arte chose to sign FA Hamilton and lose a 1st round pick instead of retaining Greinke for the same $25 mil. smh.

Yeah. Then our pitching depth revealed we didn't as teams can figure out how to beat average to AAAA pitchers nowadays. Moreno's conflicts to way back when he wanted Regan as his GM.

Hey now, we could have still had Ohtani too b/c Ohtani came back to the Angels as a sense of loyalty to give the Angels a chance to match the Dodgers offer, including the deferred payment part. But Moreno wanted pure profit. Bringing back Ohtani and then being forced to spend more money as part of Ohtani's contract isn't a Moreno thing.

Yup. Arte had Trout and then Ohtani on the cheap with a rookie type contract. Instead of addressing the pitching, Arte went after old man Rendon as well prevented the team from going over the cap. Big man Arte bossing like a Steinbrenner, but the economy of a billboard salesman.

Moreno treats Angel starting pitching like Edmonton used to treat their defense and goaltending in the early Mcdavid years.

Its been the same every year. Slightly overhyped 3-5 level starter gets signed during the offseason, and problems are never solved.

Its been dumpster fire SP decisions since trading for Zack Greinke, losing a 1st round pick, and then letting him walk without an offer. I think that's around 2012 and the moment I stopped actually watching the Angels play baseball and subbed in reading a handful of articles a year them and how they still struggle with the same issues.

I think Arte will be fine because, iirc, the MLB has revenue sharing. If it wasn't for needing a new stadium, the Athletics would permanently stay in Oakland.

Last night was a heart breaker with a blown lead in the 9th innning. I had visions of a 2-game winning streak b/c we haven't seen on since April 3rd, which was the end of a 4-game winning streak. ::: sighs ::: bullpen blunders.

Looks like Trout wont hit 100 games played again this year. 4th time he has missed the 100 game mark in the last 5 years. He went from a stud who played almost every game earlier in his career to a guy who has trouble playing in half of the season. Sad.

Might be impossible for you to believe by how hard and how often I rage post in this thread (and how low my expectations are), but I don’t think I’ve ever been as infuriated with this team as I am right now.

3rd worst record in the American League (and actually outperforming their expected win-loss record by 3 games) in the best sellers market maybe of my formative time understanding baseball… and you do absolutely f*** all but the bare minimum (and maybe not even that, given you didn’t trade Strickland and Pillar). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: barring a change in owner, I would absolutely wager the Ducks winning a championship before the Angels next make the playoffs.

EDIT with this. Fitting that on one of the most pivotal failures of a day in franchise history, the man who Arte went to bat for more than any other signing since Pujols cements himself as perhaps the worst contract in team history
