It's hilarious how much the other fanbases hate the Oilers.

Not good. But we needed the player. We were in a corner and needed to do what Lucic wanted to get the deal signed.

I think the contract is fair and anything less has him going to calgary and signing.
do you want to compete or not.

if you dont want to compete go play lawn bowling or something

I was hoping chia would avoid the NMC and give a huge signing bonus on JULY 1 2017 of 12 or 20M. That way he doesnt need to be protected and unless Las Vegas wants him for 12-20M on day one...

Okposo got 6millx7
Eriksson got 6x6
Backes got 5x6

Half of Lucics contract is signing bonus so in those last few years his contract is only paying him around 3.

Thanks. Isn't that just another form of subverting cap and frontloading anyway. heh, maybe I shouldn't say that..;)

Okposo above I like. (a bit steep though) Used to like Eriksson, would want no part of Backes ever.

Hall is smarter then that though. Hall was on his second contract. Lucic was signed as a UFA, and those contracts are always larger anyways. If hall was a free agent he would get paid more

Hall would get 8-9 as a UFA

Is it front loaded? Can you still do that with contracts? That would make it more palatable.

Not sure if it's front loaded (I assume it would be,almost all of these deals are). But more than 1/2 of it is in signing bonuses. Which will make it easier to move him in the end.

We'll prob love it the first 3 years then hate it the last few. Every FA gets overpaid in sports.

Can someone explain the signing bonus stuff to me? Isn't that basically just front loading a contract massively?

If so ... that's a good thing ... right?

This really is an abhorrent contract. Hopeful it pays off in the short term.

Money. Term. and the NMC.

Did Chia bother to negotiate? Or did he just fold like he did with the Hall/Larsson deal.
Yeah, he folded. But really he had no choice once he made up his mind to trade Hall. He knew he was going to fold and so did Lucic. It was probably the fastest negotiation ever.

Still and all, Lucic makes the team better than we were yesterday. If Katz wants to make himself useful for once and overpay for the big brand name, not our money. Looking around I'm kind of shocked to see the deals Ladd, Okposo and especially Brouwer got. Lol at the Islanders and Flames. Looking at that landscape I don't know how anyone can complain about Lucic at a $6 million caphit.

We don't know that, at all.

What we do know is Chia hasn't actually been negotiating too hard this week. On either deal. This is what Lucic camp would want, completely, and they got it all.

Does Lucic wanting to play with McDavid mean anything or just words? Fair question.

It's a good thing if you're trying to trade him with teams budgets as they don't have to pay him as much as his cap hit, but he has a full nmc so it negates the benefit.

It makes it a risk because he got a **** ton of money upfront, and doesn't have to worry about being bought out if he plays like crap cuz he got most of his money already.

This. Seems pretty clear Chia painted himself in a corner. This contract of course ought to have been finalized before the Hall deal went down. When you're trading the key asset in a deal, clearly the top player in a deal, you can say to the other party to hold the phone, I got one more thing to do first. Wasn't like Shero was going to be hanging up on the Hall deal. Despite any threat thereof.

It's a way for players to still get paid something if there is a strike and help budget teams a little bit.

Lucic is the best of all those players and got paid the same.

I think Ladd also got signed for 7 years at 5.5 or 6. Now that's bad.

Rishaug has already said the trade and the signing have nothing to do with each other.

Not really.

Signing bonuses are where a lump sum is paid to a player July 1st at the start of every season.

So lets say Lucic's salary is 6 millon dollars in a season. He could get 5 million of that on July 1, and then receive the rest of the 1 million throughout the rest of the season.

Front loading is separate from that. Front loading would be where he gets paid more in the first years of his deal than the last years.

For Lucic, I assume it's both.

hmmm. he signed for the value we had associated with that position. he also signed for exactly the lowest end of the estimated prices (from experts not punks).

im not gonna complain or talk about it more. its the contract he deserves and leaves options at the end. I dont like the NMC but almost all UFAs demand them now. if they dont get them they turn around and see the other10 suitors

Couple things.

Montreal offered more for Lucic. Other teams might of as well.

When asked why he chose Edmonton and he said (rough quote) "this may be a little selfish but there is a certain young player there that being on his line or not i couldn't pass up the opportunity to play with" he then heaped on the praise for Chia and says he sees a lot of similarities here with the Boston team he won a cup with.
