While good sportsmanship is a commendable objective, the league also promotes itself as a development league for the NHL and other professional hockey leagues. I know that many won't acknowledge it, but in the professional ranks, there is a "win at all costs" philosophy. Big money is at stake, and opponents are regarded as threats to one's contract and earning potential. Even rookies looking to earn a roster spot, can be viewed as threats.
That's the environment that Major Jr. A players graduate to, and in a way, these scraps to establish dominance are just part and parcel of their training. It's not the ONLY WAY, but it is an aspect on a player's resume the pros consider. It's possible it might be viewed as a positive character trait.
