Prospect Info: Logan Stanley: How has he progressed?

Bad enough Rangers fans are laughing at us. You want the ridicule of Oilers fans, too?

If Stanley’s ceiling is a bottom pairing defender and he was drafted at the end of the first round, then he commands even less value than Puljujarvi.

I wouldn’t do that deal but I think that’s what it would take to get it done, with all the speculation here about what he’d cost.

I certainly hope I am proven wrong.
For the sake of the Jets, you better not be. We're paper thin at that position this year. I have little faith in Niku, Buff is only getting older, and Chariot is very good at what he does, but he's limited. We have Morrissey, who MUST take it to yet another level this year for us to make the playoffs.

Then let Edmonton find another sucker. I'm not buying this "he'll be better once he's around a bunch of Finns" nonsense. If that's what it takes, there's an entire league waiting for him. At this point, I wouldn't want the Jets to give up more than a mid-round pick and preferably, just wait it out until the Oilers give up and put him on waivers. Kekalainen seems like a genius now for passing on the consensus 3rd best player.

Is Logan Stanley progressing? Sure.

Is he progressing as well as I would hope an 18th overall pick would? Nope.

Unless his improves by leaps and bounds this season, he should not be the Jets first call-up. Given his steady, but far from spectacular improvement year-to-year, he should be a #9 or #10 d-man at this point.

Stanley didn't look out of place. He's quite decent with the puck on his stick. His foot speed in the d-zone is an issue. He's smarter than Myers, but has less tools. I dunno why we drafted him in the first round based on his assets. You can tell he thinks the games pretty well, so lets hope for the best.

Perfect description. As Garret has noted, Stanley is best viewed as an offensive defenseman, and he needs to develop his defensive game. He has good vision, passes well, and he's got a very good shot. If he improves his foot-speed enough and learns how to use his reach and strength in the D zone he might be a decent NHLer.

A dman at 21 isnt officially a bust. I think he has a up hill climb. I didnt have high Hope's for him when we picked him, but he is a jet and seems to be a decent kid so I'm holding out hope.

If we are having this conversation when he is 25 yeah. Remember poolman is 25.

Qft especially when said D man is the size of a horse. I takes time to get that frame under control.

I can see why some people wanted to draft him high, still a silly risk to do it in the first round. He is also much more intimidating than Myers. Myers seems kinda wimpy, Stanley has that, 'are you sure you want to f*** with me?' thing going...

Good. Could use a bit more of that with Trouba gone.

I am ok with Logan Stanley playing 1 more year in the AHL if he will be playing top pairing minutes and has a role on PP and PK. If the Winnipeg Jets feel he is ready to play with the big team that is fine. I am not sure who his partner would be on the right side though. Is Tucker Poolman ready? Can you trust Niku/Stanley on a line in the NHL at this stage in their career? Could we see Stanley and Byfuglien together? That would be my wish as Byfuglien could teach Stanley a lot and mentor him.

Yah, Stanley is much more Chara than Myers. Chara benefits from a lot of leeway from the refs that Stanley won't get as young player, so he'll need to curb his aggressiveness accordingly. But he is miserable to play against around the net and in the corners.

The thing with Stanley to me is that everyone thought he would take a while but when you look at the other D taken in that draft class in the first or second round most of them are just starting to break into the league now with a couple of exceptions:

5) Juolevi - hasn't played
9) Sergachev - bottom pairing behind Hedman and McD with some time in the top 4 on his off side
13) Bean - hasn't played
14) McAvoy - looks like a top pairing guy but has been injured 20+ games each of his first 2 seasons
16) Chychryn - injured a lot (68, 50 + 53 games)
17) Fabbro - broke in for playoffs last year
18) Stanley
20) Cholowski - broke in last year
28) Johansen - hasn't played
34) Peeke - hasn't played
37) Hajek - just breaking in
Krys, Lindgren, Clague haven't played but people are high on them.

Girard and Hronek have both broken in but really I think it's fair to think that Stanley could be ready this year or next year. He'll get some looks this year at a minimum. The games I saw him play for the Moose I was impressed.

I think there will be serious camp battles for the D spots that only intesify if they bring somebody else in.

- Poolman is already 26 and at the end of last season Pascal Vincent said he was too good for the AHL. He needs waivers this year so will be on the Jets for sure.
- Niku (22) they (promoted) last year and didn't even make him eligible for the Moose for the playoffs. They don't expect him to be back.
- Pionk (23) didn't do great with Staal as his partner taking on the tough matchups last year for a poor Rangers team. Will be interesting to see what he looks like with us. For example Beaulieu was pressboxed with the Sabres but then looked decent on the top pair next to Trouba here.
- Stanley could be ready based on how he finished out last year. Feels like he'll get a long look.
- Kulikov with one year left on his deal will need to beat out a kid to play as he has no future here. Could see him end up as the pressbox D in case one of the kids struggle.
- Samberg - if he signs

If you want to split Jmo and buff up I see it as:

JMo - Poolman/Pionk/Niku
Niku/Stanley/Kulikov - Buff
Niku/Stanley/Kulikov - Niku/Poolman/Pionk

IMO I think it will be:

Jmo - Poolman (shut down pair)
Stanley - Buff (Monster pair... just mauling people out there and Buff is great at breaking in the kids)
Niku - Pionk (sheltered and given Ozone starts)
Kuli (Vet to step in for injuries or poor play)

If that works we are crazy deep on D with Samberg, Heinola, Kovacevic, etc all still coming and only Buff and old man Poolman (26) would be older than 24 years old.

I could never understand why Stanley got so much hate on this board ... all because one person did not like the pick and the rest followed like sheep.
I have not seem him play so I'm not going to pretend to say he is good or bad but I sure am hoping he makes a lot of people eat crow.

I agree - that comes mostly from expectations that do not line up with the plan.

He's very methodical in everything he does right now - it looks like he's trying to translate what he is being taught and this will make him look a little tentative (translates to slow) in his approach - especially in his own end. I really like the fact that he's a student of the game and understands where he needs to improve.

They are obviously working on him and they do not appear to be in a hurry to rush him into the NHL to plug a hole.
I like the fact that he's learning, developing and getting better - I'd leave him where he is until he's a little more comfortable (1 more year?) and then transition him slowly in a sheltered environment.

Baby steps with this guy and we might end up with something resembling a "Chara" type player - I'm going to assume they are working his D game at this point, especially in his own end. If he gets a little quicker (both physically and mentally), he'll bring more than Myers most nights and could slip into top 4 role.
I hope so

sure dude. Who is it we followed? What does that make you? hah, that's really f***ing hilarious...

2 more years minimum in the AHL would be ideal. If he is playing full-time in 2020 it likely means Chevy has not done a good job at finding adequate replacements for the likes of Myers and Trouba.

Yeah, you're wrong. There were PLENTY of people on here who were not wanting Stanley drafted and after we found out we were high on him were losing their shit.

Stop trying to play away the bad pick.

Talking to Logan at last weeks golf tourney. He talked about playing some preseason games with Buff last year and how easy it was to play with him. I could see that pairing getting a long look in TC.

I guess that would depend on he actually plays. I went to 1 Moose game late in the season and I focused almost exclusively on Stanley when he was on the ice and he was pretty damn impressive. He gave me every impression he wasn't that far away. Then you listen to the Vincent interview where he talks about leaning hard on Stanley later in the season and how well he handled big minutes. Again I will say if any one of our lesser but more liked prospects just had the exact same season Stanley had in the AHL we would be debating if this was the year he would take the next step to the NHL, but we would all expect him to be a NHL player sooner rather than later.

Hey Briscodog, I was trying to remember who said they spent some time talking to Stanley at a golf tourny. In your post you said something about a team telling him they were going to draft him in the 1st round. Do you mind re-sharing what he said to save searching back.

Yup, the Chara dream is still alive. Chara didn't really blossom till his 24-25 year old season, though he was playing (modestly) in the NHL at 21.
The Stanley pick was a full-out swing for a home run....and even tho I thought it was crazy, they haven't struck out quite yet.
