Prospect Info: Logan Mailloux Part 3 The Only Hockey Talk Thread

I've watched every single Laval Rocket game the last couple of seasons, and I disagree with you on this.

I personally think David Reinbacher has been Laval's best defenseman basically every game he's played in the AHL, and that he's much more pro-ready than Mailloux

But that doesn't mean I think Logan Mailloux is a bad prospect too, because he isn't.

Just, I've seen fairly little progress defensively from Mailloux this season and that plateau-ing is the opposite of what you want to see in a young prospect.

Development isn't linear, and maybe next season Mailloux takes giant strides forward. But for now I think Mailloux still has work to put in to get his defensive game in order before he sees a lot of NHL icetime.

We don't want Mailloux to "Barron it", and basically flatline his progression because of early-NHL time and trying to cling to his NHL paycheck some way, somehow.

I'd much rather we graduate Reinbacher next season, whilst giving Mailloux even more minutes next year in the AHL, PKing and eating the most minutes he can defensively so that he'd be ready to integrate the NHL team for 2026-2027.
Do we have to protect Mailloux next fall?

Development of young players has alot twists and turns for sure.

I've been saying this for years but most people just don't want to listen, they just come to this board to tell others that their opinion is wrong. No one on this board has been a bigger supporter of proper development and I've gotten a ton of shit for it as you still have posters that try to tell you that development and coaching don't matter, you are either born with it or not or whatever bullshit they are trying to sling. Anyone that's ever had a coach that helped them unlock something in their game, knows what kind of impact the right coach can have.

It's possible that I place too much importance on development and coaching but it's also possible I don't place enough as I think it's vastly important due to hockey being so much of a mental game, as it comes down to skate pass shoot, but if you don't have the confidence to do these things, it can have a major impact on your game.

They need to keep both Rein and Mailloux unless they have an opportunity for a home run trade (beniers or mctavish).

The need for redundancy is obvious as they both still come with question marks.
That's a good question to debate. We know Rein and Mailloux have long term value, or 86% sure, we would love to keep them, Habs will find usage for them, but how they are valued around the league to match the value of a Beniers for example. On the 31 other teams, how many 'Rein and Mailloux' type of d prospects are available in such a trade? Are we overating our prospects cuz we sincerely beleive they are better than other teams sh*ts. sorry, promising prospects?

How this board value our prospects vs how scouts around the league value our prospects? It's like when you want to sell your house and you think of an high price vs the real value on the market.

To be clear, I don’t think a trade would be 1-for-1.

They have a lot of potential but the risk would mean a significant piece would have to be included in a trade for a good young top 2 center.

If you are talking about Reinbacher it would be 1 for 1 or the other team adding.

Not if it’s Beniers.

Drafted higher. Has done more since being drafted. Not injury prone.

Beniers led all forwards on his (NHL) team in ice time in the second half of the season with almost 20 mins per game. Rein just trying to get through the AHL season healthy.

Just after LX was kicked out I turned to my wife and said...Mailloux is next...and within minutes, there he was, trying to start a fight.

No big deal in the dying minutes of a bad loss, but SMarty is not Vinny so I would caution M to not do that when he comes up.

I think it was the prvious game whee M was trying to start a fight and crosschecked an opposing forward. Sure enough, LX came along and joined the scrum, also cross checking that forward.

There is a reason I call them a hyena pack...

they do but to me you have to look at the entire season, as it's only been 6 playoff games so that's a small sample size. I like that this year the goals per game were up and he showed slight improvement in his defense. He had a drop in overall production but I hated how they handled him with the he's on PP1, he's off PP1, he's back on PP1, he's off PP1 again, repeat several times. How they thought putting Hoefenmayer over Mailloux on PP1 made zero sense to me. I know it was said they were trying to get him to work on his defense but how they handled just didn't make sense to me, in the end it only matters if it works though so we'll see when he gets more NHL games next year.
ABSOLUTELY!

For me, he kept M out to punish him...and that is 50s style coaching which I hate and I wrote about it a while back. I've managed a lot more people in manufacturing then Vinny can possibly imagine and I was careful NOT to use 50s style punishment on people. EVERYBODY makes mistakes and far beyond taxing/frustrating to see people make the same mistakes you just tried to correct. But that was my job like it's Vinnys job to correct and teach people, not punish them to feed my (or his) frustration and/or ego.

Is it frustrating? ABSOLUTELY. I watch M and no amount screaming at the tv is making a difference. The upside is that he is making less of them, the down side is he is still making them.

Habs brass have to be careful with what they gonna do with their young D.

I would not want another McDonagh or Sergachev trade fiascos.

Better keep Mailloux and Reinbacher at AHL level if they feel they are not NHL ready.
If M or Rein where LHD's then it's a different discussion. Right now, it's the only two RHDs that have potential to be in the top 6 and maybe top 4. If it means another season in the AHL or more tolerance to the mistakes that it's guaranteed they will make, so be it.

Math is a 10 year vet and he still manages to makes from a few to several groaners a game.

Every goal against is someone's mistake and even the Hall of Famers make them.
