Prospect Info: Logan Mailloux Part 3 The Only Hockey Talk Thread

One thing that is becoming apparent is that Mailloux is injured to a point where he shouldn't be playing.

Usually i can pick off what their injury is but I'm not able with M. The only thing I noticed was that he took too long to go back for a dropped stick. He also got caught trying to turn.

I like to know what he injured. Knee?

Mailloux will always be a frustrating player defensively, but if his offence translates to the NHL, he's still going to be an important player.

This team especially lacks what Mailloux brings:
- Physicality/meanness on the backend
- RD
- A dman that can score goals

Have to agree on the needs, but above all else top tier teams align top-tier nhl talent… « Will probably make the nhl » is not it. Compare prospects to playoff nhl opponents I figure.

Seems we are yet to see anyone not currently on the hab roster that fits the bill or has much trade value even. Maybe this guy does?

You keep them around in case one of them breaks out I suppose, but amazing « prospect depth » does not move the needle for the big club much.. One or two blue chip prospects sure would..

He's a peculiar prospect at this point, for sure. On the one hand, the stuff he does well is NHL level and I could see a scenario where he has a Mike Green/Tyson Barrie type of 10+ season career as a PP specialist with insulated 5 vs 5 minutes. On the other, the stuff he does bad is borderline junior A level and he might be too mistake prone to ever be a regular on any NHL team as a result. I legit can't make my mind up right now on which scenario is the most likely.

Usually I would not be in favor of a 3rd year for Mailloux but Logan is a different case since he barely played hockey in his junior years. Patience is still key with him.

he will need some NHL games as well though because he has to be ready for the following year when he needs to clear waivers.

My guess is that he ends next season with the Habs after the trade deadline, once Matheson has been traded.

So many people think getting rid of Matheson is addition by subtraction. The team couldn’t cope when Savard was out, and he wasn’t playing that much. What do you do with the 25 minutes matheson played? Hutson’s playing enough or too much, Guhle might be able to handle a few more, but fewer than 10. I don’t see Carrier or the lower pairing guys taking that time.

If they get a real #1 D from somewhere, fine. Otherwise it will mean a good draft pick.

Sheesh...the internet is FOREVER...

This is the play I was talking about on an earlier post. Spezza made Souray look like a traffic cone. Of course Souray forgot the basic tenant on defenseman....PLAY THE MAN, NOT THE PUCK. Which means that you tie him up as best as you can to keep him from passing or worse, taking a shot. In this case, Souray tried to hip check him instead of just plain old tying him up.

BTW...Hutson has impressed me a LOT by his tenacious tying up of forwards massively bigger then him. The very definition of "play your man".

Another point...X spent a lot of time getting the basics right in defense. He was getting taught that you keep the stick in front of you as first contact, to slow down the forward, THEN you come in with the body. Too often X tried to crush his opponent and landed up looking like a cone. We now have a prime example of someone who has the basics down pat...HUTSON. He's always trying to engage the forwards with his stick FIRST and then maybe a bit of body engagement, given that he doesn't have the mass to do much more.

I don't think about it that way at all. It will definitely be a big hole to fill, but I just don't think KH will want to sign him to his next contract.

Also personally I don't believe the hype that this team has arrived... or even close. I think we probably have a few more seasons before we can be a consistent playoff team.

Do you think KH will want to keep Matheson and sign him beyond this season at a larger cap hit? I think he will want to move him at the deadline and get a nice package for him.

Hopefully by then Mailloux will be ready to play some of those minutes... and Reinbacher too.

I still have confidence that he has what it takes to become part of the top 6 for the Habs.
